SHOT AT DAWN - CLARE'S GALLIPOLI VICTIMS
More than one hundred Clare men and women are documented as having fought in the Gallipoli Campaign in the Dardanelles region of Turkey (The Ottoman Empire) in 1915. The majority were killed.
The Gallipoli Campaign of 1915-16, also known as the Battle of Gallipoli or the Dardanelles Campaign, was an unsuccessful attempt by the Allied Powers to control the sea route from Europe to Russia during World War I. It ended in victory for the Ottoman Empire.
This video documents the story of Private Thomas Davis who was 21 years of age when he arrived in the Dardanelles.
