I was lucky to see McGeoch play twice. As a budding young guitar player, I found him amazing and I still do. He died far too young.

Hi Adrian, You're by far my favourite tutor on here as you play a lot of alternative and post punk type music...You have great taste: Wire, Magazine, Television, Joy Division etc. That was my era and I was lucky enough to see Magazine, Wire, PIL, Gang of Four and similar bands many times and Joy Division just the once as support to the Buzzcocks. How about a lesson on The Cure's 'A Forest'; or Gang of Four's 'I found That Essence rare' or maybe New York Dolls 'Looking For A Kiss'. Keep up the excellent work!

absolutely fantastic , really great, in respects to your choice ,very accurate breakdown of this amazing song and teaching approach . John Mcgeoch is also in my top five guitarists and his work with Magazine is so brilliant fiery and unique. I often wonder how he achieved his wonderful slicing sounds ; he really thought about the whole band sound as well as his contributions and thats very intelligent. thankyou for this.

Really great lesson. The intro riff is also used on Lipstick by the buzzcocks b side to promises as shot by both sides was co written by Pete Shelley and Howard devoto. Another song with a great riff and solo in similar vein and era Another Girl Another Planet maybe a lesson on that cheers great stuff.

A pleasure to watch and listen to the unique style of John McGeoch, his sonic palette creating vibrant and fascinating structures with his energising touch. An early work, puts him up and away from just a chugging punk riffster. Definitely need a hum-bucker to begin with and a few , choice fx exploited to their fullest. Sadly missed, 48 years was still too young for him to go.

Although this riff is credited as one of Mc Geoch's finest, it is exactly the same riff as Lipstick by Buzzcocks written by Pete Shelley who is credited as co -writer of Shot By Both Sides . Howard Devoto was in the band before leaving to form Magazine and sings on Buzzcocks first release Spiral Scratch EP. Lipstick only appeared on a B-side of Promises. The solo though was all Johns, IMO heavily influenced by Televisions Tom Verlaine on Marquee Moon .

The riff was written by Pete Shelley who gave it to magazine to use, he also used it in the Buzzcocks single 'Lipstick' One curious difference between the two magazine versions is the line 'They all sound the same when they scream' on the LP version is replaced by 'They'll have to rewrite all their books again' on the single version 🤔I can't see a connection.

Lipstick breathlessly races along starting with the verse(?) in E major accompanied by just cycling its 4 and 5 chords, never resolving to the 1, then rushes into the chorus(?) in the parallel minor with the the mixed down Shot riff and it’s harmony of course. If you hadn’t heard the Shot song I don’t think their common riff would be noticed here. I love Lipstick’s harmony trick though. Pete Shelly channelling Franz Schubert?

NOGOYOSocial : Digital : Audio | Marketing : Branding Lipstick Buzzcocks vs. Magazine :: Lipstick vs. Shot by Both Sides Pete Shelley’s the man. I haven’t been able to get the Buzzcocks out of my head lately (insert Harmony in my Head joke here). When you listen to Pete Shelley, you can’t help but move along to Magazine, fronted by ex-Buzzcocker Howard Devoto. The great thing about having two artists who were once creative partners split to make their own bands is this: you occasionally end up with two unique takes on an identical piece of art. In this case, both Shelley and Devoto riffed on the same guitar riff.
