For some context, I've paraphrased an article below that discusses this topic:
Transracial adoption is complicated. Adoptive parents and adopted children (adoptees) have a relationship that is both similar and very different than that between biological parents and biological children. Children who remain with their biological parents are not expected to be grateful for the mere coincidence of their birth, a circumstance over which they had no control. Adopted children, however, are. This expectation is not necessarily coming from adoptive parents. In my experience, it's more so been from interactions with strangers and how they speak about adoption in addition to many articles and videos that have one-sided narratives and frame it from the lens of parents saving children, rather than children allowing parents to start or add to their family. I am so incredibly grateful for my family, life, New York City, but that gratitude is mine to feel and own.
I know this video was a little more serious, but hope it was still fun! I'm thinking about making a series talking about different challenges that adoptees and lgbtq families face. What should I talk about? Let me know below.
About me: Hello! I'm Ben and I was adopted by my dads (gay parents) from China and grew up in NYC. I make videos about adoption, lgbtq families, and everything else "modern family".
Let me know what you think! Comments and questions much appreciated. :)
