As a dude, I couldn’t care less about who shares my bathroom as long as they adhere to the three cardinal rules. 1. Don’t bother me when I’m trying to poop. 2. Don’t bother me when I’m trying to pee. 3. Don’t bother me when I’m washing up after having just peed or pooped. So yeah, bring on the gender neutral restrooms. My only concern is that with the new regulations indicating that they are no longer required to provide two separate restrooms, the been-counters will quickly decide that three toilet stalls is more than enough for a floor of 300 office workers.

Some guy was practically pressing his body on me inside a restaurant and he came up out of nowhere. If I was in the restroom and he came in there I know he wouldn’t have let me out because he was blocking me as it was and there was people around so I know it would’ve been worse if he was allowed in the restroom, I one hundred percent would have gotten raped/assaulted by him. So many times I needed to take a breath because I was upset that somebody was fucking with me and I just went in the bathroom to collect myself. And what about women who have to adjust their undergarments or use the mirror and sink to clean up a mess of a period/ sinks and mirror are not in the individual stall. Also if I was on the toilet , that guy who was harassing me in the restaurant , he would have went in and harassed me for my number when I was in stall, I know this cos he was following me around the restaurant asking for it. So this guy might not get bothered while he’s in the middle of going or trying to clean up himself or cleanse himself in the mirror or just adjust his undergarments in the mirror when he’s washing his hands… But us women do you get harassed, so sure make unisex bathrooms and women and male bathrooms. That way people providing care and their clients/children can go together, and people that want to chat or do their make-up can go together. While fully partitioned stalls take up slightly more space and probably cost somewhat more than the non-partitioned version, I vastly prefer them in terms of privacy, versatility, and their capability as gender-neutral/gender-inclusive solutions. I get that some building codes require segregated bathrooms, but we should work to change that. I understand that some people are uncomfortable with non-gender segregated bathrooms, but I think as soon as people start using them, they will get used to them very quickly. The one thing you lose out on with gender-neutral bathrooms are urinals for people who can pee standing up. They are much faster to use, more water efficient, and they keep the sit down toilets cleaner (since people won't be peeing into them causing splash-back). If I'm not mistaken this is one of the main reasons why men's bathrooms tend to have faster lines. I think the only solution to that is to have a couple of partitioned off urinals within the gender-neutral bathroom to keep the flow of traffic faster and more efficient.

I don't see why gender-neutral bathrooms shouldn't have urinals. For example, if you have a bathroom with stalls on one side and the sinks opposite of them, you could just section of a T-head (just two walls, doesn't even need a door) at the end and put the urinals to the left and right. One problem I can see if we switched to fully-private stalls (doors and walls that go all the way to the ground) is homeless people essentially camping out in them. I used to work in a grocery store, and at least once a week we'd have to deal with a homeless person causing trouble in the customer bathroom. Don't get me wrong: most of the homeless people would just use the bathroom in a totally normal way, didn't hassle anyone, and we paid them no mind. But every once in a while, someone would strip off their clothes and try to do their laundry in the sink. I can totally see a homeless person, on a cold winter day, going to a public bathroom with fully private stalls and spending their day inside one, rather than outside in the harsh weather. I guess what I'm saying is, we need to work on getting homes for the homeless. And stop freaking out about the gender identity of the person pooping next to you.

Here’s an advantage to single-stall: it might reduce a bit of pressure on the disabled toilets. My son is autistic and, because of sensory sensitivities and high anxiety, can’t go in a regular public men’s room. The hand-dryers go off unpredictably, it hurts his ears, he has a meltdown. He usually has to use the disabled stall, simply because it’s often the only single-stall room available where he won’t have to be afraid of hand-dryers. (And if you’ve never tried to get an autistic kid to go into a place they’re scared of ... well, let me tell you. This isn’t faddishness, this is ‘That kid isn’t going in there unless you physically grapple him in there, literally kicking and screaming.’) And I don’t apologise for taking him to the disabled stall: autism is a disability. But in single-stall places, I don’t have to worry we’re holding up someone with a physical issue, and I don’t have to deal with all the side-eyes and people telling me, ‘That’s the disabled toilet, you know...’ (Seriously, please son’t force me to explain my son’s neurotype and challenges while he’s standing right there. He just wants to pee without fear; let him have a bit of dignity.) So single-stall is also helpful for people with non-physical disabilities, who may not need a handrail but do need extra quiet and privacy.

I don't mind having gender neutral toilets. My issue is how privacy would be handled. Regular toilets in the US are already pretty crap regarding privacy - stalls that leave wide gaps between door and floor, door and ceiling, and between door and wall (I close the door and there's still a visible slit I can see out of). Makes me miss the bathrooms in some parts of Asia where each stall feels like an actual bathroom _room_ and while sound still travels, nobody can see you. Regarding urinals, if they have space for a bigger bathroom, a third of it can be for urinals, a third for sinks, and the other third for all the private stalls. Also, don't forget to put one or two folding tables for babies' use. And a bigger stall for handicap use would also be great.

I see where you’re coming from but there are ways to fix things/modernise toilets. All Stalls to be big enough to fit a wheelchair in, floor to ceiling walls are good and the doors & there’s a very small gap under door on video I seen but you wouldn’t be able to actually tell if anyone in there unless you’re really trying to. If normal stalls can fit wheelchairs in that means you don’t need another space for disabled toilets as as the cubicles would fit wheelchairs. Also you can get toilets that once you push door shut door will lock itself then you just undo it when you want to get out of the stall. You would get nappy charge areas but would require more sinks. Also there less chances of bee or wasp that’s going to sting you if they are floor to ceiling door & walls & aslong as they have a hygiene bin in each stall. I don’t see an issue. Designs of old buildings toilet areas might need to change but when I use to go college in the U.K. not university. Here in New Zealand I've noticed a trend over the last few years (principally in new buildings) of dispensing with gendered toilet areas and instead providing a number of single-person toilets containing a hand-basin which are accessible from a general area (so not really non-gendered toilets where all people share the hand-basins). In the toilet areas where there are shared hand-basins, these are often in a space which is not enclosed, thus making these hand-basin areas more public and presumably less potentially intimidating for those people who might feel uncomfortable being in a semi-isolated space with other genders. This seems like a pretty sensible solution to me, especially if there is also a room with urinals only (this is most common in bars, for the obvious reason). This set-up means that men who just want to urinate (and aren't neurotic) (o; can do their business quickly and leave the single-person toilets for those who need them.

there is a particular toilet in a large mall near my house in northern italy that has: Men, women, boy, girl, and disabled options. I think that if you have the space the more options the better. In italy I think that by code you have to provide a disabled option: sometime is a separated gender neutral option, and sometime is the male o female option, or the only option. You can easily design a common room with urinals where the stale are close to the door in front of the sink, and the urinals are in the back separated by a wall. It may be a little awkward at first but it works

Dear trans people, this is a genuine question which is not supposed to be offensive. Would you be okay with an extra restroom just for yourself? This way, I think, it's possible to keep women's privacy inside the ladies' room, and you would have another restroom for yourselves. Of course, this would increase the taxes because someone has to pay for those extra restrooms but I can't think of a better idea to satisfy everybody (either cis or transsexual).

The arrangement worked very well, and occupied less space. I prefer fully eparated toilets because they offered greater privacy. I've never liked the dividers used in most standard stalls, which generally have large spaces at the bottom and top, or listening to people doing their business.

My question is more to do with the unique design of American public bathrooms. Here, our stalls are more partial partitions with open spaces top in bottom. Many public bathrooms in Europe look like a series of toilet-filled closets. In the interest of encouraging gender neutral restrooms, that design would help with privacy concerns. So what are the reasons for the design difference?
@ARTiculations
5 жыл бұрын
Partial partitions are easier to clean, since you can just sweep and mop below them. They are also in general better for safety - for example if someone collapses in a stall it's easy for others to notice and promptly assist them. I do designs for healthcare facilities and generally they prefer partial partitions so they can more easily get to a patient who has collapsed. But of course the draw back is less privacy.
@kevinwells9751

Love your stuff! I was terrified of the comments, but turns out I'm early! There are 2 as of typing. I'm nonbinary lol and I think in the US at least, our usual design is super unsanitary n socially uncomfortable. There either needs to be more research into the sanitation and psychology or it needs to be way better applied. Among other things the current state of public male restrooms and changing tables are extremely disrespectful towards the user and just: gross. My understanding is that, for optimal sanitation, toilets are supposed to be way separated from everything, including the sinks (I don't know for certain I'm a science person but I don't have a doctorate in sanitation lol). And I think (classical/widely liked) music or cheap soundproofing should be employed, not just for user satisfaction, but so the line goes faster because people are shy. Fully partitioned bathrooms are top tier (and safer/cleaner to my understanding) and I think if they were standard, average quality of life would be higher lol, it's often such an afterthought in design, nothing that important should ever be! I also think people are less likely to intentionally reck a nice restroom. So: nice, fully partitioned toilets with like, a floor button/something that you don't have touch with your hands to get out to get to the sink area that has space to spruce up is my current optimal alternative idea for relatively practical public restrooms for buildings that currently have around 5 + female stalls in America. Those would be gender-neutral by nature but some additional, optional, more gender-segregated facilities might be necessary for some people/situations. A small, partially partitioned section for changing clothes would also be great. Disabled people should be able to work with designers in having the final say about the codes for them in this situation. If a place has the resources, they should strive for the best bathrooms within reason for the sake of customer satisfaction and straight up morals. (note: Most places where I say "I think" There might be specific data to back it up, that I might have but I don't want to mislead you just in case, I'm not gonna double check all my sources for this particular KZitem comment lol and from my experience researching that or similar subjects, it's very likely to be the case, I'm not claiming that the stuff I'm talking about is necessarily a matter of opinion.)

I'm just back from a trip to the Nordic countries, and there I noticed that a) toilet partitions are virtually nonexistant (it's almost all full partition walls for the toilet compartment) and b) there were many gender neutral restrooms all over (using aforementioned partitioned compartments). It seemed like it has well been integrated there for a number of years and thus completely "natural". So the conversations we're having in North America about it are a bit late to the game... ;) Personally I found it great. (Also, the restrooms were very clean, in part I think because people there were more conscious about being/keeping it clean) As an architect as well I've been thinking about how we might better design our restrooms to make them gender neutral like that, and there's a great model to steal from over there. :)

There are so many other issues with bathroom designs. There's a bathroom in Narita (Tokyo) airport that has unfortunately placed mirrors that give passers-by *outside* the bathroom a direct view through the doorway of the genitals of men at the urinals. Public urinals also usually have the unfortunate feature of having chromed pipes, meaning you have an omnidirectional mirror facing you during a most private activity. Gender-neutral bathrooms or not (and I'm all for them!), all urinals need dividers. Also, there were weird windows into some of the bathrooms (and locker rooms) at my junior high that were accessible to all students. Not sure why. I'm fairly tall, so I highly support having multiple levels of sinks if there are multiple. Many places have me stooping awkwardly to wash my hands. I have a lot of opinions on public restrooms. Most are horribly designed and I could go on for a long time about them.

Historically, the creation of separate bathrooms originated in the early years when women began leaving the home and hearth and started working in factories where there had been only one toilet. Women ended up getting assaulted behind closed doors by the men in the factory. Women tried to cope by dehydrating themselves and trying to hold it during a 12 hour shift. They resorted to relieving themselves in the streets as a group, each taking turns hiding within a circle of women's long skirts. (As did the pioneer women of covered wagon times, in the late 1800's when the open prairies afforded women no privacy in a wagontrain of dozens of other familiies.) Only when it was "taken to the streets" did anyone notice the need for separate bathrooms. Sadly, the only ones pushing for gender neutral bathrooms are men or young naive women who haven't yet experienced a significant assault. Keep separate bathrooms! Offer more "family bathrooms" . Surely someone out there could come up with a smaller more streamlined toilet/sink/wash system (as on planes) to save space in order to create more of them.

I prefer gendered bathrooms! As I’m a woman who would feel safer and more privacy if the creep that was stalking me in store was not allowed in. I have gotten sexually harassed and assaulted in public. I get followed outside and when I’m in stores. And I have had to collect myself in the restroom and I know that the guy he was stalking me and demanding a I take his number would follow me into the bathroom when I was in the stall using it… Or if I was in the Mirror. God forbid I need to use the mirror and sink that’s not in the stall to adjust my under garments. What about women that are having problems with their periods and bleed through their clothing. You know sometimes they have to bend over and check to make sure they’re not leaking in the mirrors. Sometimes I take a paper towel at the sink and cleanse myself. If I was doing this in front of a guy well… I would be exposing myself. And not only that those guys who were being predatory with me would be bothering me while I was doing this which is not OK. And they would bother me so don’t tell me they wouldn’t because I deal with this on a daily basis. Some guy said that my experiences aren’t universal… That’s ridiculous because pay attention to all the women that are complaining about being sexually harassed when they leave the house. Women who can’t go anywhere without a guy following them, groping them , getting so close his groin area is almost on top of them. Sure a guy can sneak in there but likely someone will see and tell him to get out. Or if I go in the restroom and see a guy lingering in there I can say get out or I can report it. If women don’t have a place to go then they can’t report it and they’re just gonna have to be forced to go to the restroom in front of the creep. And it is a huge problem with women… It’s become an epidemic how would we get sexually harassed when they leave the house. The guy that told me that my experience is not universal… What world does he live in because I know so many women who complain about it and I live it! For the safety for my loved ones… That are women in my future daughters… And my nieces and my sisters and my mothers and grandmothers and aunt… We need to protect women because the world is not perfect and there are predators out there. It’s not a joke. They’re saying that if a predator wants to get in the bathroom he will… Not necessarily so. If we can kick him out of the bathroom, At least don’t hesitate to go in. At least someone will see him go in and tell him not to.at least the chances that we don’t get assaulted are lower. Why make the risk greater. And yea someone argued That people who get raped normally happens by people they know… Well in my experience I have been sexually harassed and assaulted by strangers when I leave the home rather be on the streets were in stores… Never by somebody I know… So that’s great for them that it doesn’t happen to them but it’s not the reality for everyone! With that being said. Sure make unisex bathroom & men & woman bathrooms. And if someone has transitioned then use the restroom that the transitioned into. But do not take away women’s restrooms

It's really silly and weird our toilet stalls don't go down so far, have huge gaps between the doors and the frame, etc. I personally would be plenty happy with some properly-private toilet stalls coupled with a communal hand-washing area, AND more "family restrooms" for people with kids, caretakers, really shy bladders, etc.

On of the buildings at my university (built in the 80s I believe) has gendered toilets, but no urinals in the men’s. This means (and I’ve confirmed with female friends) that the two toilets are exactly the same, and since it’s not the US all the stalls have full walls with lockable doors. I genuinely don’t understand why people would care about the toilets being gendered if literally the only time you’re seeing another person is when washing your hands?? I think there should just be two rooms, urinal rooms and proper toilets. That way any women who are uncomfortable with having urinals in their toilets wouldn’t have to worry about it, and anyone who was just peeing would have the option. I’ve seen this setup a few times mainly at large venues, and I think it works super well. Way less queueing for everyone and you don’t have to worry about two toilets in different places if you’re with a group and don’t want to get separated.

Liiiittle bit of stigma. Personally, when I want to piss, I have so many things to weigh up. Risk of being 'clocked' in women's toilets, harassment, weirdness and horrible stares/double takes in men's ones. Does the disabled use the radar key system? Does it not? Am I likely to hold up anyone who needs that space more than me? When you have to think of an alibi or a story if someone questions which one you use, THAT is an issue. Also, what about very feminine men or masculine women? Some women look entirely like men despite not identifying as such and vice versa. If that one, relatively tiny risk puts you off gender-neutral bathrooms (even though it really is none of your concern, and also doesn't exactly add up when you think about it) then I really don't know what to tell you, but being trans, getting caught short in public makes it feel like you're walking into some guaranteed harrassment.

Part of the problem especially in the US is the infamous "stall gap." You should NEVER be able to see into/out of a stall, and they should be tall enough to accommodate very tall folks without risk of seeing over into another stall. The first stall I used that had the cover plates to deal with the stall gap felt like a whole new world. Another issue is the cleanliness problem: Some people, usually men, don't feel obligated to do their business cleanly, even though they themselves may have to sit down on a toilet one day, too, as most of us do at some point, and they feel even less obligated to clean up after themselves if they fail to meet these standards. Finally, cultural issues: A friend worked in a company in the US that was based in India, and many of the employees moved to the US to do their jobs here. The problem with this is that the women were used to the "hole in the floor" style bathrooms, and so stood on the toilet seats. This resulted in mess and foot prints on the seats, despite signs saying otherwise. So while I advocate strongly for gender neutral bathrooms, we HAVE to get better about all these problems too.

Some have a small sink inside the cubicle, some have a shared basin. I have never seen it cause any issue and i personally prefer it. The space is usually more private than a large single gendered bathroom. They've always been around but they have gotten more common and better quality recently. I mean your house has gender neutral bathrooms? It just seems so normal to me. Where i went to college a long time ago they had moved around the toilets. Originally it was 2 mens upstairs, and 2 womens downstairs. They decided to switch it so there was one of each on each floor. But they hadn't taken out the urinals. I more than triple checked the door... I remember my dad taking me into the mens as a child and it being a horrific experience. Certain public ones would reek. Doesn't seem to be as much of an issue anymore? Also what i learned from going to music festivals is that men in general seem very disinterested in privacy =P .

In america, they added walls between urinals to provide more privacy. Sorry I’m not cool with another dude checking out my penis. I think most guys would agree unless they are homosexual.

I have mixed feelings on this one. I work at a gas station with two identical washrooms, with gender specific signage. It’s not a rare event for me to find the men’s room has urine all over the toilet seat because some men (a) don’t know they should lift the seat before urinating, and (b) can’t aim their urine stream. I wouldn’t want some of the ladies to have to clean the seat before using the toilet. On the other hand we sometimes direct customers to the “wrong” washroom when theirs is closed for some reason or is occupied and the customer is getting urgent. One detail I would love to see adopted in Canada is locks which display “vacant” or “occupied” signs on the outside of the door depending on the status of the lock inside. I grew up with that back in the fourties’ and fifties when I was a child in England.

In Seattle, a LOT of the bathrooms were ALL gender neutral. The three options weren’t offered. It was frustrating being aa tourist and having to navigate the rivers of piss on the floor and toilet seat. If all the bathrooms are going to be gender neutral then men MUST start peeing sitting down. It really feels like we,re going back to to the days when there were no pubic bathrooms for women.

@@tabkaliO Wow, sounds like you live in the mentally retarded part of town. Either that, or you're fabricating stories. I can't remember the last time I experienced ANY wet seat, much less a flood of urine everywhere. But I CAN say that the toilet seat in portable toilets have often been wet right after being used by a WOMAN!

Why all the fuzz over a colour on the wall, a sign on the door and the urinal. A compromize could just be writing toilet on the door then no one gets offended.

- 1 Toilet is cheaper than two, and I suppose "Genderneutral" - 2 Toilets is the safest from a social point of view but also in practice, if one toilet breaks down - 3 Toilets is an absolut waste
