A fitting time to discuss this, considering that the Amazon synod is coming up in about a month. Originally I was all for married priests. I believed it was the best way to solve the priest shortage in that area. It’s only recently that I realized that Amazonian Catholicism is in no way going to be improved by introducing more laxity to people who’ve not been properly catechized in the first place. Edit: I also understand that married priest are in no way compatible with the Latin rite. Though even if they concocted some new rite for the Amazon, it would not be appropriate for their situation.

Those are fallacies. You have a monk, Gregory the Great, who became Pope and felt why don't we make everyone a monk about 1000 years into the life of the Church. It really killed the Church especially after the monks got female clergy banned from ordination. This has resulted in a relaxation of ecclesiastical discipline for Christians in the RCC. Canons apply only to religious and clergy. It doesn't help to boost your vocations. That is what people are discovering that a married permanent deacon is as good as a priest and no one is buying the monastics propaganda anymore. Clerical celibacy may save the RCC money but the cost is in souls and vocations. When you admit 100 Seminarians and ordain 5 it is definitely not an issue of shortages

I really needed to hear this at this time because I just read a book which was autobiographical about a priest who secretly married and had repeatedly broken his vows of celibacy. The book was called Unholy Silence. It made me feel angry. It also was demoralizing and very depressing. I needed to hear your sound judgment and hear you talk about how it is supposed to work. Please keep covering these topics. I really felt comforted by your discussion. Hi ! CISSY DAVIS, according to the bible the hardest thing of the Christian life is to deny yourself and carry the cross, to love you enemies to preach the Gospel and expect rejection or even death for preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Catholic priesthood has been nullified by Jesus 2,000 Years ago. It is obsolete and blasphemous . All this is explained in the book of Hebrews, from chapter 5 to the end if the book. The priesthood in the catholic system just void a religious practice pave with good intencions but docents acknowledge what Jesus accomplished in the cross. We are are saints and priest in God's eyes. Our body is the temple of the holy spirit and we offered "surrender "our body daily as a holy sacrifice (not for forgiveness of our sins) but as to obedience to denied ourselves and carry the cross. Only Jesus is our holy priest because he was the only one that shead his blood for the remission of our sins. Please read the book of Hebrews and I will pray for to see christ as pur only priest ,not man ! That was abolished by the cross and the new covenant of the spirit.

Since there have been married priests during the Church history, and since there are some few today, I think there should be some married priests at some level. For example, it would be better if the diocesian priests be married, since they don't live in a community, in a religious order. This I think would be also a good example for the catholic families. Since the family today is in crisis, a priest could lead such families in problems by his own example, since he knows how it is to raise a family, and a celibate priest has never raised children and doesn't know.

To become a celibate priest is a personal decision it is not force, if the priest decides to marry then leave. There are so married Pastors that are not faithful. If you are not faithful as celibate priest mostly likelihood you will not faithful as non celibate priest. What is unfolding is that the society isinfluencing the church more than the church even making churches to abandon key biblical principles . A load of confusion in this one. The answer is: No - A priest cannot get married, his ordination precludes this. May a married man become a priest; the answer is: Yes. So, the only problem is: Under what circumstances may a married man become a priest .. and it is this set of issues that the up-comping Amazon Synod seeks to obscure (for, it seems, ulterior motives, as always). Very few married men - of proven virtue - would have the time, support, availability, and peace to undertake the studies to meet the earth-staggering demands of the Catholic priesthood. This was less so in the earlier days of the Church, for wealthy, successful, and established men had the wherewithal to do the work - and if a pagan such a Pater Familias had already been a 'priest' of sorts but a hieros / sacerdos/ prayer-leader .. what he was not was a presbyteros / presbyter / prester (an elder in the local church aka Catholic priest). As a city father and a local big wig - exercising unthinkable powers of authority, justice, teaching - the idea of calling him out to visit some poor old beggar woman in a dirty hovel up an insalubrious part town, in the second watch of the night, to offer comfort, penance, and the last rites .. would not have sat well together .. visiting a local dignitary's sick wife, with understanding, at a reasonable time, and as part of the patrician's role, well, that would be different. This kind of Viri Probati (called to assist the local bishop) is not at all what Catholics have come to understand of the priesthood, totally dedicated to their spiritual needs. Ordinary local countryside (aka pagan) Catholic priests did not require college qualifications or have a seminary training, they were more or less like their neighbours .. tied to the ground. No bishopric for them, no far-flung secretarial duties, no major city or imperial posts; enough Latin or Greek to read and write, sufficient time to do an apprenticeship learning the books and rites; and just about sufficient confidence to speak the Mass or a sermon or two .. even if it was garbled into Hocus Pocus (in the ears of the sniffy elite). This sort of twin-track type of priesthood is still the common manner of the Eastern (aka Orthodox) Rites, it is the settlement accepted by the Ordinariate et al; it is not, however, the way of the English Church (Anglican or Episcopalian), here unmarried priests can marry (perhaps also divorce, and who knows even re-marry) - and this permissiveness applies to any priest of either gender (and, in some places, of whatever sexual taste); it does not take too much of a rocket-science mind to work out which model is the objective being pursued by the German Church's movers and shakers in further Lutheranising what little is left of the Church in communion with Rome. www.newyorker.com/news/on-religion/the-lutheran-pastor-calling-for-a-sexual-reformation

The whole show is not about married men being priests, as long since permitted in the Latin Rite - under regular conditions .. nor is it a matter of widening the scope of these rules. Here the unspoken point is to allow priests to get married - to admit sexual equality to the ordained ministries - and to undermine the meaning of ordination farther than it has already gone. If some still do not see or believe it, then the handling of Amoris Laetitia should be more than a wake-up call - as to how footnotes, proper interpretations and obfuscating papal silences have worked .. within the Modernist cause. :o) God bless.

Celibacy is a discipline of the church and unfortunately has had the unintentional consequence of a Haven for infiltration of the church by homosexual men. Additionally, the church had other ulterior motives to move to celibacy. Priests and Bishops owned property, land and treasure that complicated legacy and transfer of wealth to families or to the church upon death. The church wanted to keep and maintain land, title and treasure and therefore, implemented the discipline of celibacy. The church points to Jesus as the Supreme example of celibacy, however, as noted we know that married priest were allowed untill around the 12th century A.D. in the Roman Catholic rite. The church needs both married and celibate clergy in order to provide checks and balances. As the married priest mentioned it is likely that a married priest will have many children and potentially have a son become a priest, which has positive implications to the number of priests able to serve. This also implies a farther reach into the community as an example of what a Holy marriage should be. One of the main detractors for men becoming priests is the fact that celibacy is required. If this discipline is corrected to optional, then more men will be attracted to the service of the priesthood, this is evident in the number of deacons beginning to outnumber the priests in the United States. So the answer to the question of celibacy or not? is YES! I do not agree with father about sacrifice, marriage requires much sacrifice, albeit in the domestic church at home. It is important that fruits can be produced by both married and unmarried priest. The original command is to go forth and multiply. Just different fruits, not better or higher fruits.

As in, "Thank you--dating you has convinced me that I want to be celibate." Some line for a breakup! Try that one on your self-esteem. No one seems interested in how the wife and children are affected. They're treated as just accessories to the priest. This is for 1214gooner. I can't comment to you directly for some reason. Yes, it is a good thing that within the Eastern Orthodox tradition that a Priest can be a married man, and can have a healthy sexual relationship with his wife and she with her husband, just as God Intended for His creation. In ¹Corinthians 7, Saint Paul even goes on to say "I have no commandment from the Lord" meaning that what he goes on to say is more of a personal statement which he is encouraging. Also he never mentions Priests specifically, but rather talks in a more general sense. It would be best for those who have wives to live as though they did not, meaning in a sexual sense, only if they have the will power to abstain from sex and other sexual activities that could lead someone into sin. Such as fornication or adultery. But it is far better for you to have a wife and have a healthy sexual relationship with her within the boundaries of marriage which is given us by God. Take this into account, if you are not able to live without having a sexual relationship. Understand this my friend, that this is far better and is what God expects of us to do, rather than having sexual relationships with women outside of marriage, where one is in danger of committing fornication to demons and/or physical adultery towards another's spouse, or spiritual adultery towards God. Painstakingly this is the case with many Roman Catholic priests. It deeply saddens me to know the many lives that have been destroyed. The majority of them having been that of innocent children having their purity taken away by the priests of demons. Not only does this physically and mentally ruin a person for life, but most if not all abandon God as a consequence of the atrocities which befell them. These priests causing the faith of these little ones to wither and die, there is no greater evil than that. Also I'm sure the Quinisext Council forbid clerics from having improper and illicit relationships with women.. hence out of the boundaries of Christian marriage.

Hey Christ be with you In the early Church, men could marry but when they became deacons and especially priest they were expected to remain celibate. For we learned that many priests and deacons of Christ, long after their ordination, have produced offspring both from their own wives and even through filthy liaisons, and defend their sin with this excuse, that it is read in the Old Testament that the opportunity to procreate was given to priests and ministers. I'm all for a celebate priesthood...Saint Paul in his words, calls it the best form of service to God. I'm against the opinion that celibacy leads to pedophilia. If you're driven by passion, then you'd get a girlfriend. Not that it would be a good thing to do, but the need you would have is of a woman, so you'd get one, instead of a child. So there's absolutely no link between the two. However, what is it that causes SOME Catholic priests to be pedophiles? What is the cause of this problem, and why is it more common among Catholic clergy than non-Catholic clergy?

Buddhist monks and nuns are celibate, even Ghandi became celibate. I would think parishioners would be hesitant to call on a Priest who is married, so as not to disturb his family. The commitment made is a 100% commitment with the Church as the Priest's bride. Celibacy is incredibly liberating and strengthens a person's convictions and only makes them a stronger person. If only more people learned this, there wouldn't be so any trying to sex/love in any and all the wrong places, as society is now proving.

I kind of see it like this...I think having married priest is just adding more modernism in the church, as if to say celibacy is old fashion. Not that the church can't move with the times, it can , as it did with vatican 'll. A priest chooses to marry the church, and with that he gives of himself to the whole church, as does a married person within marriage. You just can't be married and single at the same time. If we start doing this with the church, it won't be long till we see it in marriage. Its not easy committing one's self to marriage or to religious life, but that's the point in making a commitment!

No. There is no definition which can be applied to a union between same-sex individuals that would flow from the sacramental grace of God. In other words, by the definition of marriage we are given by God, which is written both in our biology and in our human nature, as well as defined in the scriptures through divine revelation, same-sex unions are not marital. For example, if we look outside the human species, like Bald Eagles, we find a similar nature. Male and female Bald Eagles normally form lifelong, bonded pairs. This is the best arrangement according to their nature, in order to ensure the health and survival of young, and by extension the survival of the species. It is true that some Eagles may exhibit sexual behavior contrary to their nature, but it is rarely, if ever exclusive and in those extremely rare cases those particular birds would not successfully procreate and pass their disordered tenancies on to the next generation. Also, is cases where bonded pairs are broken, either through death or disordered behavior, offspring would typically not be able to thrive, and potentially may not be able survive. Long story short, in the case of humanity, the unitive and procreative nature of sexuality and marriage is only naturally beneficial to the species and society at large in the context of monogamous, lifelong, heterosexual unions. AKA, marriage. One thing that is unique to humanity is our will and ability to reason. Thus enters the culpability to sin, in other words, the ability to choose against our nature and to know/understand that we are doing so. So in human nature, it is important to educate our children in how to willfully choose what is good over what is disordered and destructive. This is how death entered the world. Interestingly enough, this also means that before the fall of humanity, sexuality was unnecessary.

It is a question because this is not a doctrine of the Church. Unlike the topic of female priests, which will NEVER happen as it is not a Christ instituted tradition, for the first 1000 of years our own church allowed men who were married to be ordained as priests. If their wife died, they could not remarry. And no man who had taken Holy Orders first could secondarily be married. This is a tradition that is a serious consideration for the Church. It is not something to be changed lightly. We had 1000 years of strict rules for marriage standards for priests but allowed it, and then changed its position after some serious abuses on the part of married bishops, archbishops, cardinals and even Popes. Then followed our 1000 years of mandatory celibacy of the priesthood. It’s a very limited, very strictly regulation of ordained episcopal priests who have wives and children and yet who still feel a calling to their priesthood. There has been a strict and deliberate path laid down for these men and their families. To me, this is the best path. Keep our celibate priesthood celibate. Keep the door open for converted priests from the Anglican or orthodox denominations who maintain their priestly calling and who are willing to follow the very strict and narrow path laid out for them to share their gifts with the RC Church and their knowledge.

Marriage is the very first sacrament ordained by God. The Trinity is family, and the most profound "Image of God" is a family, not a unmarried person. Marriage is living under sacred vows of fidelity. The highest calling is NOT celibacy. This has its roots in pagan asceticism. NOT Judaism or Christianity. Celibacy is not on a higher moral plane than sacred matrimony. A man can have a calling for parenthood and priesthood. The ER of the Roman Catholic Church has always allowed the tradition and gift of marriage and orders. Living alone and being celibate is not a more holy calling than matrimony. T

Honestly, I regard this as something of a non-issue. In I Cor. 7, while Paul did advance the notion of celibacy, he actively forbade mandating it. Marriage was declared a legitimate option for all Christians. When the Catholic church declared it mandatory, they were essentially declaring that they knew better than God did. As long as the Catholic church mandates celibacy for priests, the Catholic church is in violation of Biblical law. Any supposed benefit of priestly celibacy (if there are any) becomes irrelevant: God commands that the door to marriage be left open. Ergo, man does not have His permission to close it.

In verse 7, Paul admits that not all have the gift of celibacy, and in verse 9, adds that it's better to marry than be overwhelmed with lust. It's simply, mercilessly clear: God recognizes that not everyone is build for a celibate existence and leaves His people an "out", in the form of marriage. The celibacy mandate removes this, defying God's explicit instructions. It is a declaration by men that they know better than God, and such talk is blasphemous.

@@oddish4352 the passage you cited nowhere claims what you attribute to St. Paul, namely, that he "actively forbade mandating it". Not mandating celibacy is not the same as actively forbidding mandating it. Contextually, St. Paul doesn't address the Church's authority in regard to disciplinary matters of clergy. Of course, in the early church, priests and bishops were allowed to marry, but there is no explicit discussion regarding whether the Church has authority to require celibacy as prerequisite for entering the clergy.
