Wow I loved this! Thanks for a breathe of fresh air and common sense! I’m actually Mormon and found all the controversy really interesting. I’m homeschooling for the first time this year and so Ive watched lots of reviews on different curriculums, and obviously came across the controversial TGATB videos. I guess (being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) I always considered myself part of the whole Christian world and I never realized that other Christians don’t really think that. It kind of hurt me. I thought christian was a believer in Christ. Christ could not be more central to our lives as Mormons. He is everything. The Book of Mormon is all about Christ. Christ visiting a different civilization after his resurrection and ascension. We also believe the Bible and read both books regularly. I know every Christian believes slightly different things, even amongst Mormons we believe slightly different things, but man, if we separated ourselves based on those things then where would we all be? We all believe in Jesus Christ and as His disciples we should try to ban together. The world has enough to fight against and it helps to ban together as followers of Christ. Christ’s team needs all the help it can get! It was just eye opening to see so much prejudice against my faith. Not that the pain I felt watching the videos came close but I thought of how Christ must have felt when His own people rejected Him. I can’t imagine judging a homeschool curriculum because it was created by a baptist or Amish or Lutheran or evangelical etc. Even if they slightly disagree with my personal beliefs. I watch and listen to all sorts of Christian content, good revelation come from good information as they say. I guess I assumed most Christians were that way. I’m sad for what those people are giving up. Anyways it’s very Christian of you to not judge the creator of TGATB just because she’s Mormon. You’ve gained a subscriber here 😊

The video that sparked the controversy made me so angry, and I wasn't even using The Good and the Beautiful at the time. The things said in that video were just completely based in prejudice which feels all too familiar to me as a Catholic. I empathize with you and Jenny Phillips so much because even though we have different doctrinal beliefs I know what it feels like for other Christians to poopoo on my religion. It has become my very un-Christlike opinion that protestants who hold these prejudices are the least worthy of calling themselves Christians than any of us. But I have to put that aside and do my very best in loving them because that is what Jesus instructed us to do. He did not instruct us to shun others who don't think the same way. The way these Christians behave also reminds me of Jesus' disciples when they argued over who was the best among them. That is what they do, trying to be a better Christian than everyone else and yet they claim their faith is not works-based. Also it's interesting how Rebecca of Homeschool On (the lady who sparked the controversy) felt like she needed to write a blog post one year later to reiterate all the same points she had already made. If God was really telling her to turn away from The Good and the Beautiful then she would not have felt the need to continue defending her decision over and over again. It's as if she is trying to convince herself that she is doing the right thing. I am now happily using the Good and the Beautiful for language arts and math. Trying to turn away from the hateful judgmental Masterbooks, which regularly puts down TGTB in their Facebook group and which Rebecca writes for now. I don't want to support a company that teaches that my religion is false, increasing the prejudice against us. On the other hand, Jenny Phillips has people of different Christian faiths reviewing her curriculum so that it is welcoming for all of us who follow Christ.

It is the only curriculum I recommend to anyone who ask me about a good religious based homeschool curriculum. I agree if your point 100%. When anything is mentioned of the Bible we cross it out and add something from our religion and that does happen too often. TG&TB is the best curriculum out there.

I recently received my math workbook from BJU press and learned that for the most part religious part is on a stand alone separate page & the info on it good. Some small parts could easily be bypassed.

I am using TGTB. It is a wholesome curriculum. I am Apostolic Pentecostal (oneness). So no curiculum ever lines up completely with our belief system. I just explain that to my kiddos when we get there. I have not found anything in. TGTB that is outside of the Bible or associated with any one particular Christian denomination. I feel if it isnt for you dont use it but dont bully the creator just find another one that suits your needs. So many just see it as a company they can attack but it is a person who poured their heart and soul into something. We should remember to have a christ-like attitude in all our dealings. When this controversy started I searched for the video that started it all and watched very carefully. IMO, what I saw was a woman who was very full of herself and starting a controversy based on no truth. She said she couldn't support TGTB because they were Mormon, although there is NOTHING in the curriculums that had any Mormon beliefs. In the same breath she said she had no problem with using secular curriculums! On top of that she admitted she was breaking ties because she had formed another one with another company to create curriculum. Right there showed what her video was really about, self promotion. She should be ashamed of herself for making such a public stink and people who jumped on the bandwagon with her should be ashamed for not seeing the wolf in sheeps clothing. It is difficult for me to understand how anyone can watch her video and then jump on TGTB boycotting bandwagon. Just because someone says they are a Christian does not mean they are. Just because someone says they are a Christian does not mean they act and do things that a Christian is supposed to. Just because they say God told them to do something does not mean it is truth. We are supposed to be careful who we "follow" and who we listen to. I have personally not used TGTB curriculum, but I have looked at it several times over the past couple of years and downloaded many guides to look at in detail wishing I could fit it in, but because we have used curriculum sets such as My Father's World and Heart of Dakota we used what was suggested in the guides, for the most part, instead. I know for a fact there was nothing in several of the guides that even alluded a Mormon faith. There have been several times in our curriculums that I had to modify or skip what was being taught. I didn't like the teaching in the devotions book that was suggested for Heart of Dakota and stopped using it after a couple lessons. Then the next year I didn't even purchase the next devotion book in the series. Some of the historical books used were a bit extreme, but I modified those and some were for more detailed discussion. This year we are switching to WinterPromise. I will also be using discernment while going through the guide. No curriculum will align 100% with a family's beliefs.

I’m not a young earth creationist, but we still use Jay Wiles’ science because he is a good, genuine and intelligent person whose focus is to prepare kids for college science. There’s nothing wrong with secular curriculum. I think the OP was point out that it’s hypocritical to refuse to use a curriculum because it was created by a Mormon, but be okay with using secular curricula in which the authors might also go against your beliefs.

We homeschooled both of our children through high school and never thought about the denomination of the people who wrote the curriculum. We were very thorough in our study and if it didn't match up with what we believed we used them as learning experiences. We didn't come across that very often but it did happen. We used Christian curriculum the entire time and I still don't know who wrote any of it and don't really care. Thank you for doing this. I don't homeschool anymore because mine are graduated and I'm not even sure why I watched this because it is about homeschooling and I didn't even know about this curriculum. I guess it's because I'm subscribed to you lol. Thanks for doing this, it needs to be said. Thank you for the video!! Ok here's my honest review! :) I've been using TGATB for this school year and while I believe I have seen my son grow academically, we'll be switching to something else. I initially bought it because so many reviewers said it's conducive to a large family (we have 4, and pregnant with #5). We are nondenominational Christians and it was imperative to me that the curriculum didn't have a hint of Mormonism in it. I haven't encountered any yet - however, the language arts has the child read and memorize "feel-good" "moralistic" poems and short stories, many written by the author Jenny Phillips herself. While they are absolutely sweet & cute, there is NO scripture sprinkled anywhere in the language arts. At all. Yes, there's mention of "God" but that can mean so many different things to so many people of other faiths (Mormons, Jewish, etc). While it's great seeing a mention of God in lessons here and there, I'm left hungering for any kind of scripture... Of course, we have been supplementing the lack of scripture by just reading the NIV Bible on the side (daily devotions before bedtime) but since then, I've done a LOT of research and have found some pretty awesome contenders that DO include scripture within the curriculum AND suit a large homeschooling family setting. Personally, one of my strongest convictions about homeschooling is building a school experience with strong spiritual education & academic education at the same time. I want to raise defenders of the Christian faith - as they'll be bombarded with a world someday that will test them and they'll have to be ready to answer those who ask the tough questions (How do you know Jesus really was resurrected? How do you know for sure there's a heaven & a hell? Can you lose your salvation? How can you prove the Bible is accurate? Etc, etc....loooove Christian apologetics! So good to start kids early in this so they understand "why" they believe, not just "what" they believe) Don't get me wrong - TGATB books are SO beautifully designed and graphics are nice to look at, and I've loved my homeschooling time with my son. I am just prayerfully considering other curriculum to suit our family's homeschool goal of intertwining scripture into daily lessons so they are grounded in their knowledge of the Word and that it permeates our learning time. Like I said, I'm still praying for the Lord to help lead me to a different curriculum, so if anyone out there has a suggestion you've tried and might like, I'd love to hear your thoughts! :)

I see what you mean. No, there is little-to-no actual scripture in the curriculum but for us, that doesn't bother me since it's interwoven in our history and science and of course, the girls' Bible studies. I know this is an old video, but I wanted to comment my apreciation for your openess and kindness. I'm a "Mormon", and while I only use a few things from TGATB, I was shocked and hurt by the review that you are referring to attacking this cirriculum and my religion. I understand why someone may not want to use it, but to claim that NO ONE should use it, and then go on to attack my faith is just plain un-Christlike in my opinion. Yes we have some very different beliefs, but we are all good people just trying to do whats best for our kids, and trying to live lives of Christlike love. We should all be united in that. I have a lot of respect for other Christians living in this anti-Christian world, even when they aren't of my faith. And you are spot on about skipping over or talking through things you come accross that do conflict with your beliefs. That's a great way to build your kids own ability to decipher for themselves what is true, and prepare them to live in the world and not of the world. We use many cirriculums that are Christan but not Mormon, and also some that have no religious base at all, and we tailor them to our needs.

As for the "video that set all of this off.." I watched that vid, and once again.. feel that that mom shared from her heart.. about her personal convictions in a very respectful manner.. As an adult I’ve chosen to no longer attend The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (which is the actual name of the “Mormon” church). “Mormon” is basically just slang. 90% of my family including my husband is still a part and attends the church. One thing I just wanted to clear up is that Mormons are definitely Christians. They believe in Jesus Christ and his teachings. I thought I would chime in because I feel I have a very unique and neutral perspective on the church being that I grew up in it and have a very deep and thorough knowledge of it but no longer participate in it. Tara, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints definitely believe in the Christ of the Bible. I've never heard that quote but would be interested in seeing where it is posted. We believe that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ are two individuals. That Christ is literally the Only Begotten Son of God. We believe that, as Spiritual children of God, that all people have the potential to become like our Father in Heaven and become (lower case) gods-- but we do not think that we will ever be equal to or surpass God the Father or Christ. They will always be our God. We believe that they are one in purpose and that to know Christ is to know Heavenly Father. The biggest difference between the LDS churches theology and standard Christian theology is that we do not believe in the Trinity, because we believe Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the holy ghost are three separate beings although they work to fulfill one purpose.

I use TGTB...but I'm not someone promoting it to 40,000 people+ as a business. In a way she was saying she was unequally yoked. I think she spoke with grace and conviction, and I have respect for her. She didn't tell anyone to stop using TGTB or discourage it. She said from HER business perspective she had to cut ties. Thanks for offer your thoughts. I think you have good points. I also think that with any curriculum and its creator, the main issue is whether or not there’s some message being taught. For example if the Good and the Beautiful advertises itself as a homeschool curriculum, well, great. As you said you cannot possibly know the faith background of all curriculum creators. BUT if a curriculum advertises itself as “Christian” and then you find out the creator was of a religious affiliation not traditionally recognized as Christian, then I think it could be an issue. To cut to the chase: what’s the view about Jesus in a particular curriculum that claims to be Christian? In Jesus’ own words, “Who do you say I am?” I also believe that seeing such delicate issue of conviction based on price point is more utilitarian and so many of us are willing to spend money if it meant we were compromising in an area of conviction. In matters of conscience, the Bible promises that both believer groups, those eating meat sacrificed to idols and those who don’t, will be sustained. But those with the less sensitive conscience are exhorted to look after the brother whose conscience is more sensitive.

After watching this, I would highly recommend you watch the following video from a former LDS church member on why she won’t use this curriculum. kzitem.info/news/bejne/p5-Zr3aQmn-CmaA I do think it is unwise to use a religious based curriculum when you don’t know what the beliefs of that religion are. LDS uses many of the same theology terms as Christians, but the definitions are completely different. They do not believe in the same Jesus as Christians and therefor cannot call themselves Christians. They have been deceived by false prophets. I pray for the Mormon community daily. I know they are good people and I fervently pray they come to know the true Jesus of the Bible and find their saving faith in him. (I know someone will read that and say “but they do believe in Jesus!” Again, their definition of many things, including who Jesus is, is not the same as a Christians. Who you believe Jesus to be is CENTRAL to a saving Christian faith, it is not a fluid idea. There are plenty of places you can read more about this.)

I think that first of all you need to consider how will it come into play. If you are going to use curriculum that does not go against your beliefs it does not matter what the the writer of said curriculum is, because it does not come into play. It is not harmful in anyway, shape or form. If, however, the beliefs of the curriculum writer is throughout the said curriculum than I would not continue to purchase it. I am not into all the hoopla, so this is actually the first I have heard of this issue. The issue at hand is not an issue of conscience, because if the doctrines are not there, then what is the issue? We don't "boycott" because someone is different; boycotting has to do with beliefs and standards. (When liberals announced a boycott on Chick Fil- A because of the owners stance on marriage when OR when conservatives announced a boycott on Target because of the dressing room policy - these two things went against beliefs and standards.) As to boycotting things to bring about change, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Can we boycott everything? No. I think it does matter why. Several boycotts have been successful and several boycott have not been. At the same time; however we all have different standards. Good video, Becky!

Personally, if it wasn’t a Christian based curriculum and it was written by an LDS author I’d have no problem. I would not however use TGATB. A lot of Mormons I know and grew up with don’t know the Bible well at all. They know the Book of Mormon well but not the Bible. BOM contradicts the Bible. I have no problem supporting businesses owned by people of different backgrounds but my boundary is getting religious material from any source that’s not 100% bible based. That’s my PERSONAL conviction anyway.

Melisa Roberson actually the LDS church teaches the Bible just as much as The Book of Mormon. If some “Mormons” don’t know the Bible as well, it’s because of their own personal choice not to study it as much. And The Book of Mormon does not contradict the Bible. It is referred to as another testament of Jesus Christ. Meaning, in addition to The Bible.

My friend and I discussed this at length when the controversy came out. Discernment is apparently something that people are lacking. If something isn't right for your family, then that doesn't mean it's not right for other people. Also people drive me crazy not using things as a teaching experience. In our family, If we read in a book something we don't believe in or agree with we don't take to the Internet screaming about it and get rid of the book, we discuss why we don't believe it, and move on. I felt annoyed by the first video that came out by this. The woman obviously was partnering up with another curriculum and that was obviously why she cut ties with TGTB. I heard of TGTB from a mom from our church and we aren't Mormon. I knew I could trust her judgement based on our similar beliefs. But I still looked through it before deciding to use it on my own.

I do understand the concerns and I certainly see the point in publicly sharing why she's not using the curriculum. Some of these homeschool mommy bloggers and KZitem reviewers influence thousands of people's decisions, and as one of these women stated, we will be held accountable to God at the end of our lives for every word spoken and certainly for every person we helped lead astray. And as a born-again Christian, I actually feel strongly that those who claim to be Christian but actually preach another gospel are worse than secular people or other religions who are at least upfront about not being Christian, as these deceived people/pretenders are tricking the lambs of Christ. I also think it's a good point to consider that nearly all Mormons tithe to their church and their Mormon missions, and so to support this curriculum is to support the spreading of a false gospel. I know that I for one could never feel okay with doing that. If I found out the author of a another curriculum that I was using was giving their money to, say, Planned Parenthood, or some other un-Christian cause, I would also have to stop using that curriculum. Using this curriculum while being ignorant of that is certainly excusable, but once you know these things, honestly, it's time to move on and choose another curriculum.

I really liked this video and agree wholeheartedly. I cannot respond to all the answers below but will just attempt quickly. I am sad there was hate or prejudice thrown at any LDS person. (or Catholic, or protestant etc) I personally am a born again Christian, leaving the Cult of the Jehovah's Witnesses. If a Jehovah's Witnesses produced some amazing content, I'm curious if other Christians would respond the same. I too was warned to watch out for TGATB because some of the CONTENT was based on their personal doctrine. That would be the only issue I would look for. The reason for this red flag (coming from a person who was born into a High Control Sect of christianity - i.e. a Cult) is the insidiousness of these cults. Mormons believe that Jesus and Adam are The Same Person. So.....while I believe this is a dangerous teaching, I will leave it in the Lords hands to fix. Jehovah's Witnesses's believe that Jesus is Michael the Archangel.... don't believe we have an eternal spirit, teach that ONLY 144,000 people get to heaven . .have a million rules to follow etc. To some this is blasphemy. I have had to study cults and high control groups since leaving the Watchtower corporation, and will definitely say the LDS is a very dangerous sect because they teach "doctrines of men" AS commands of God. This could very well lead to: at worst losing their salvation, at best, being stuck in a legalistic false religion. They have many many practices that are against scripture (as do Jehovah's witnesses) but ALL religion and ALL doctrine - comes from MEN who are IMPERFECT. This is why it's so important to read the bible and stick to what IT says and what Jesus Christ himself tells us to do. Also important NOT to Judge others! God bless

You know.. I'm a homechool mom from South Africa and we use TGTB and my daughter loves it. Now here's my take.. As a Christian who wondered around (worshipped anywhere) before finding my church I can tell people one thing, you are going to miss out on many things in life because God has faithful children scattered out there and at the time He deem right, He will bring everyone together. And yuou're right, you can't autopilot parenting. Be involved. I am around for every lesson I even read lessons in advance. I also want to add that I have never come across anything that talks about Mormonism ever, only scripture is and God is mentioned on lesson videos something we appreciate and that's that. To each his own but we love tgtb and have found nothing wrong with it or the creator of the curriculum instead I see a woman who love God and whom God loves and s guiding and I say this because when she released the free curriculum it was as though God personally spoke to her about us and our situation after losing my daughter's father. God made a provision through this woman that now that we can purchase we want to do that. She has helped so many families in ways she will never even understand and only God can use a person like that for every good thing comes from Him.

This is the first video I have watched and will not be subscribing to your channel, let me explain why. Firstly, I found the overall tone of this video aggressive hypocritical and adding further toxicity tonthw conversation going on. You state watch my video on mom quilt trying to support your own brand, you say several times make your own choices and I find this all hypocritical. I found your entire video to aim guilt and same on what to me was someone else's personal views. Using terms like alarmist attitude and similar references throughout are direct judgements. It to me was hostile, and toxic. To me using your platform to make judgemental comments like that in videos on a topic where you could have easily just left them out appeared to an intentional slam in a video where you say make your own opinion. ( which correct me if I am wrong was what the other individual said in her video, No?) This video could have been hey should Christians use the good and the beautiful? I'm a Christian, here's why is am using it. See the difference, the tone is different and more effect. I would suggest checking yoir own heart and motivation behind this...maybe delete this video and try again with a more positive vibe instead of being dramatic yourself.

As a member of the LDS church, I'm asking you to please change your title to reflect the name of our religion (either LDS or The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) I would greatly appreciate it ☺

1. I have to wonder how one can say everything in the curriculum is straight biblical facts when Mormons don't understand straight biblical facts. Any group who does not understand Salvation comes through Christ alone cannot be classified as Christian in anyway. 2. No I don't know alot about every person who wrote every piece of my curriculum. But if I do find out a Muslim, a Jehovah's Witness, or Mormon wrote my curriculum, I will find something else. Well maybe not if it's math. If you are a Christian and are fine with it, that's fine. But I am a Christian and I am not fine with it and that equally fine and not hypocritical.

Mormon is just a nickname the church is actually The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. “Mormons” teachings are the teachings of Jesus Christ.

mountaingal homemaker that is untrue. They worship Jesus Christ and their church is organized the same way Jesus organized his church when he lived on the earth. Which is why the name of the church is The Church of Jesus Christ. Also, this church provides EXTENSIVE aid to third world countries and victims of disasters and more. They serve and give to everyone as Jesus did. Nobody has the right to say that someone who follows and worships Jesus Christ is not Christian. Anyone who would like to learn for themselves what The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints teaches and does for others you can see for yourself self at mormon.org (They use the nickname because most people refer to the church members as Mormons and don’t know the real name.) That way, if you want to comment negatively or positively about the church, you can do so with your own knowledge about the facts.

@@KarlyA. "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." Matthew 7:21-23 KJV The LDS church can do all the wonderful works they want, but that means nothing if they don't know Jesus Christ. Do you believe Jesus is God? Do you believe there is ONE God, that only one God has ever existed or will ever exist? Do you believe that salvation is by grace and NOT of works in any way? I know that every Mormon does not know what the LDS teachings are, but if you said no to any of those questions then you do not believe in the teachings of Jesus Christ. The LDS teachings contradict the Bible on all 3 counts.

That was a very intelligent and thoughtful video. If you ever want to know more about the Mormons( which is a nickname from the Book of Mormon) faith is their website www.churchofjesuschrist.org. As Christians our families, faith, and morals values are of top importance to us. If anything, we should unite together as our nation is dwindling in righteous endeavors.

So is this suppose to be a “Christian” curriculum that was completely created by a Mormon? Mormonism is 100% different from Christianity. Jesus has a different meaning and a different role in lots of religions.Theology matters. I don’t care about the beliefs of the person who wrote most of my curriculum until it comes down to the curriculum that brings in religious, spiritual or Christian teachings. Open your bible if you are a Jesus follower and study it. Pray for discernment. Maybe what’s in this curriculum sounds nice and innocent. But how deep does the theology go for the older grades? The pictures of this curriculum sure do look beautiful.
