Recently, a Christian 501(c)(3) organization was denied tax-exempt status by the IRS because of some variation of the following: "Biblical principles tend to favor Republican candidates." This exemption has been appealed and the decision rightly reversed. However, IRS law bans "political campaign activity by charities and churches." So if we believe that churches are called to preach “the whole counsel of God,” which includes applying biblical principles to the civil/political realm, should churches then abstain from getting a 501(c)(3)?
