Hi Lashaunda, this is a great example of a perfect pairing you've presented, too. You'll have great job training in HR from your major and you'll also understand how to apply that training to the corporate world through your business minor. Win win! While you're at it, look at what business courses you take in the minor and try to tailor them to your job interests in HR. See also if business offers any certifications that might overlap with the minor, like a focus in management. And depending on how far into your degree you are, also consider taking some intro level sociology courses to meet your university's general education requirements. I find those can also be a great help in understanding how organizations function. Thanks for sharing that and I'm glad you liked the video. I enjoy making them. Are there any other university questions or topics you'd like me to make a video about?

@dr.maples

@mahmoudfathy7187 great questions and ideas here. First per the Bureau of Labor Statistics, aerospace engineering is a growing field, so graduating with that degree regardless of a minor should still lead to a favorable job market. As such you’d be fine NOT to add a minor if it doesn’t work out. That’s good to know. Now let’s look at reasons why you still might want to add the minor. First it seems you have an interest in the physics end of the industry. As such adding the minor could expand your options in the job market. Second if you have a personal interest in physics then working in that specific field could also help you find a job that fits your long term life goals (and having a job you love is part of that process). Third if working in the physics realm of the industry has additional income potential (something your faculty would know better than I) it could be a good choice to add this minor in physics. Let’s think about the barriers now. First how long will this take? If adding the minor means staying in college another two years I don’t encourage it as you would already be going into a growing labor market without it. If it adds 1-2 semesters or you can simply add it into your remaining coursework then it makes sense to add it. There’s also cost: can you afford to add that additional time in tuition or have scholarships that will cover the costs? If that’s not an issue then adding again makes sense IF the timing also works, but if you are low on resources or time I’d simply aim to graduate and get into the labor market as soon as possible. There’s also another option here: simply take some additional physics courses but don’t add the minor. As long as you have the knowledge and can talk about that in your application you will likely cover your employer’s interest in those areas as an aerospace engineer. It might let you have e the best of both options if time or resources aren’t working out to add the minor. Happy to chat more about this decision. Congrats on choosing an excellent career path. Please share the channel with your classmates and let me know what you decide to do with the minor.

@BenLeaf you will have many job opportunities with this pairing. I would suggest leaning into the data analytics core personally as there are so many jobs there listed every day. If you have time I’d also complete the Google data analytics course online. There’s a monthly fee to enroll in the course but it is reasonable to finish it in a semester so the cost would be ~$200. It would reinforce your course material and also give you hands on experience and a certification that will support your growth in the field. The keys really are in your hands here. The only question is how far you decide to take it as the options are endless. Thanks for watching. Please share the channel with your friends and classmates and let me know how it goes on the job market.

@@CraccHeadJack You can never really go wrong with either of these fields individually. I haven’t thought before about putting the two together but my first thought would be finding computer science work at finance related companies. I’m thinking mortgage industry, credit card industry, loan origination companies, and the like. Then, looking at the long term, watch for openings to move into the science-end of things, such as looking for patterns in customer data using AI. I’d imagine you would find some fantastic, high paying work in that area. Or consider cyber security or fraud research and prediction in finance companies and especially in credit card firms. @dr.maples
Ай бұрын
@CraccHeadJack that’s an exciting field with great job opportunities. This is a doable path but for efficiency reasons it has me thinking two things: 1. Would having finance as your major (or as a second major) be a better support system if you plan to do a masters degree in finance? And 2. Will statistics be sufficiently covered in the computer science major to support the quant finance masters training and job search? One big advantage to having finance as a major going into to a finance masters program is you’ll definitely have any finance prerequisite classes out of the way and therefore no transcript barriers to you being accepted into their program. It’s common to have a different major than your masters program but just make sure you have any required classes the masters program may have. Ideally you don’t want to waste a semester taking more undergrad classes to begin your masters. A grad program coordinator in finance (at your current university or a university to which you plan to apply) can help identify these classes and even help you pick courses in your minor if you go that route. FYI I also have a video up explaining second majors or ask questions as needed. I’d also want to make sure you feel comfortable with stats and if finance is the minor then we’d want to make sure you have that knowledge covered somewhere. if you’re using R in your computer science classes and have an undergrad stats class on your transcript I expect you’d be fine going into masters training. In my students’ experiences, computer science majors have stats elements in specific classes but not everyone ends up taking them as they are electives. Just make sure you feel comfortable there. Again we want as few barriers as possible going into your masters application. As a final note, I’d look into the software being used in quant finance jobs today and make sure you have some basic skills in that software where possible. That will be a huge plus in the job market. And I’d expect Python and SQL would be required as well but a computer science major typically covers those or you can learn those on your own. Again, exciting path with great prospects and pay. Happy to chat more and thanks for watching. Please tell others about the channel. Have new videos coming out this summer and fall.

@dr.maples
Жыл бұрын
@Riley I don't teach in elementary education, but I've been told by colleagues in that field that it is a good idea to pick a minor that would be a specialty for you in teaching. Would you be planning to specialize in teaching languages or perhaps grammar as an elementary teacher? If so, then this makes great sense, but if not it could be worth considering what your specialty would be. Alternately, your elementary education degree and any required certifications are going to be what gets you a job, so if you simply enjoy linguistics then that's also a legitimate reason to pick it as a minor. As a follow up, I'd also ask your faculty in elementary education and see what their thoughts are regarding that specialty question above. Political Science major with a minor in Mass Media. I’m hoping pursuing the minor won’t delay graduation 🙃
@dr.maples
3 ай бұрын
Yeah I really like that combo. I think a good outcome from this pairing is the ability to effectively communicate big ideas to wide audiences or specific audiences. Mass media has just a bit of sociology in it as well which helps you understand demographics which ties back into your major and communicating to specific audiences through their motivations. It’s a solid pick if it fits into your timeline for graduation. Do you already have some careers in mind here? I see options depending on what motivates you. For example, this background could make you a strong candidate for policy and planning jobs, local/state government, or advising corporations as well as candidates on communicating ideas. There’s even an angle for marketing and media jobs if you aren’t focused on the politics end of your major. Tell me more about what interests you here. Be happy to think more about career options. As for delaying graduation, it’s really up to your level of tolerance. If it means another semester of student loans it may not be worth your time and costs depending on your tuition bill. I also think you could find ways to work ideas from the minor into your applications even without completing it. That said if you are on scholarships or maybe graduating early and don’t mind the loans it definitely could add some additional value to your major. And if there’s no delay to graduation I’d go for it. Let me know what you find out on that.

@@dr.maples Hey Dr M! I’m actually interested in the intelligence community but I need a bachelor’s degree to break into the field. Political science just happens to be what I’m most interested in even outside of academics so I figured I might as well major in it. I used to have a podcast which was kinda my introduction to the world of mass media but it wasn’t until I saw it as an available minor did I decide to add it to my education. I’ve always been interested in the media and I would like to work in the field in some way assuming plan A doesn’t work out. As far as costs go, I’m a veteran so I’m using my GI Bill to finance my education thankfully. No more loans here 😮💨

@robbiesworld9156 Great! The GI Bill is awesome and in that case it makes great sense to add this so long as it won’t stretch graduation out further than you/the GI Bill will tolerate. A bit more detail below as well. So the intelligence part is interesting and opens a lot of options. First that does fit well with the major and I think the minor would be useful here as well. Second, veteran status would be a plus on the application to any federal jobs. It also will help on everything from understanding how the system works to applying for your CAC and security clearance. (I am a military brat myself, dad was retired army.) There are some details to consider here. Intelligence jobs cover a very wide track so it would be good to do some digging on where you might like to end up. Intelligence careers.gov is a great starting point if you need it. I will say that if you are thinking about either the data driven jobs or cybersecurity end of this field you may be better served with a minor in those areas. For data jobs having experience in Python, sql, R and so forth can also replace classes in most cases unless the job listing specifically requires transcript credits. But otherwise you’ll be fine with political science and your background in mass media to get your foot into the door. Moreover the job market should remain in your favor for the coming years. Congrats on finding an awesome path where you can serve others (but also get paid well at the same time). Happy to answer questions anytime and let me know what you decide on the minor.

@andonbailey9656 this is all great info and I’m glad you also have a good minor mentor from the sounds of it. Being a COO is an excellent long-term career goal so I suggest it would be good to start working on your soft skills and networking to prepare for the job market so we can get you to that goal. Doing an internship could be an excellent part of that process and most programs allow you to do internships for college credit. (See if your major or university has an internship program and send some introduction/interest emails their way.) likewise start looking for mentorship opportunities whether through your faculty, local entrepreneurs, or alumni. Find people who can help you get your place in a great first job after graduation and get you on your upward path and continue to lift you up. One other thing to consider is advanced degrees such as an MBA which I understand can help on getting those upper echelon jobs like a COO. Throughout keep in touch! @Jolynn O so glad this video was helpful. You have a real quandary here: stay longer and add a minor, or get out early. There's a few things to consider: 1. If you have the tuition coverage (even at 50%) and you are 100% positive staying that extra semester results in a minor, it seems fine to do so if that works for you. However, is that 50% tuition you are going to pay worth that minor? If you can already work in that field with your major (or even with the classes you've already taken) it may be worth considering early graduation. 2. If you only need 1-2 classes in the spring, I'd ask the minor advisor to see if there's any chance you can petition those courses by special arrangement in the fall or even winter. Faculty generally get paid a small stipend to offer the courses early so they're often willing. If it is several courses, then you're definitely stuck doing another semester to get the minor. 3. Do you get the internship option either way? That seems like an amazing opportunity, so I'd consider telling my advisees to skip a minor if it got them a great internship. Would love to hear more about this and definitely let us know what you decide! Thanks for watching! Please tell others about he channel so we can help other students.

Kidding aside, teaching is one of those majors where it can be hard to fit in a minor due to the often high number of hours required for the degree. If you can fit in a minor, focus on something that enhances your knowledge. For example if you teach literature then having a sociology or history minor background can add context to great books. I know that is is very different from my major and probably quite unusual. Also, not a ton of overlap and I would have to do a few extra prerequisite classes. Do you think having a minor in physics would be enough of a positive factor in a job search to merit the extra workload or should I just take some physics classes as electives because it interests me. How exciting, Evelyn! Sociology and history are an excellent pairing. You will graduate with a deep understanding of how society has changed over time and in respect to historical events. If you have time to add a minor in economics, that would complement your two current majors. The trade-off is that adding that minor may mean delaying graduation, so think about what the payoffs would be for you. For example, if you are thinking about going into graduate studies in sociology or history, having that economics minor would be a great plus because you would be able to apply your field with specialized knowledge in how the economy functions over time. If you are going into the job market, that economics minor could be helpful if your planned field involves examining economic change, creating/critiquing policies, or working with economic data. For most universities and colleges, a minor will add around 15-18 class hours but it can vary by location and how that college/university counts hours. If you still need to meet with someone in rehabilitation's minor program, you can always look up the department chair for that program and write them noting an interest in their minor. They'll send you over to someone for advising. Let me know what you find out!
