I've been in HR for 13 years, 8 as a Generalist & the last 5 as a Corporate Specialist. I've been wanting to take the next step as an HR Manager, seeing as I've worked with HR Managers & HR Directors for so long, but I've found out a lot of luck is involved. This is due to a lot of these positions not coming available within a company, too often. I feel I'm more than experienced enough, but it's all about finding that opportunity to be given a shot at it. I only have 2 years of college, so a lot of hiring places look down at people with no degree, sadly, but as I like to mention with my experience, I can run circles around anyone just getting out of college with a 4 year degree who has no professional experience, so that's a plus. Fingers crossed I finally get the opportunity!

Question: Why do companies post job positions with the words “assistant” or “clerk”, and not “generalist? Is there a tangible difference between an HR Clerk, assistant, and generalist? I.e. responsibilities, education?
@antonioc5062

They are more entry level roles. A Clerk or Admin would deal with a lot of filing and taking and making calls. Kind of front desk so to speak. They may dive into things like time cards to an extent or new hire packets for orientations. HR Assistants dive a little deeper than a clerk or Admin and have a few more HR responsibilities. But all of the above have a heavy focus in the administrative part of HR. Again this varies with each company.

Hm I would disagree. You’ll be communicating with many staff and candidates regardless of which HR role you hold.

@@CarmenNg1214 i agree. I am an introvert. I was targeting generalist positions thinking it was my next step but landed a benefits specialist position. I really love that I no longer have to interview and recruit lol
