after college, I went straight into law school so I didn't have to look for a job. If you meant after law school then it wasn't easy but it wasn't super difficult. It depends what types of jobs you are looking for, I was willing to take anything law related (even if it was a legal assistant).

@BrittanyTran

law firm is working at a law firm where you handle many different clients and cases. working in house means you work at a company in their legal department as a lawyer for the company. that means you are an employee of the company and represent the company in all their legal issues.

it’s a very very stressful job. If people want their prescriptions now they want it now. You’re working on a prescription and someone comes in and their script isn’t ready you have to drop everything and work on it. Moreover, there are multiple cases where there’s 10 or more people waiting and you have to work on them as fast as possible. You’re constantly running and running trying to dispense 200 or more prescriptions a day. There are a lot of details you have to pay attention to for each patient and you also have to deal with their insurances. Also, the machine isn’t always the one counting and scanning. You have to be really good at multitasking and multitasking well. You absolutely cannot mess up a patient’s prescription. You also have to be extremely patient with the customers. These are just some things to consider if you want to become a pharmacist or a Phamarcy technician or if you want to be a clerk there. They all have different roles but they all absolutely have to be careful.

I am a litigator in Florida - practicing law for almost 20 years. There is a lot of bad and a lot of good about becoming a lawyer. Thank you for sharing your insight, and you make a lot of good points. As far as helping people - there are many lawyers who have the internal fortitude to keep that as their priority throughout their career - no matter whether or not they will make money. Sure - there are many who get jaded or who forget the reason they went into law, those are the bad apples in the industry. But there are a lot (well, at least a few) really good ones out there. P.S. - I worked at law firms most of my career, and I almost never spent more than 40 hours in the office. Sure, there were projects on which I worked long hours, even overnight. But those were fun and interesting. Big law may require such long hours - but you can be smart and succeed in law without killing yourself.

@@C3yl0 Your suggestion has a few unstated premises. First, you assume that people not obsessed with practicing law are in some way blocking others from entering the field. Second, that there is a large pool of enthusiastic people who want to be lawyers. Third, that clients will be well served by the replacement of the former with the latter. Read Harper's "The Lawyer Bubble," and confirm his sources, or provide some research to support your priors. I would love to believe your three assumptions, but I haven't seen reliable evidence supporting them.

After being a paralegal for 10 years, realizing this is all I know now, and wanting to have a more direct impact with clients, I decided to take the lawyer track. Instead of law school, I'm in a law reader program. I can't imagine the stress of the bar with $160,000 in debt hanging over my head. Four states (Virginia, Vermont, Washington, and California) allow a student to study the law under the supervision of an attorney in a law office instead of at a law school. During that time, the student submits examinations given to him/ her by the supervising attorney to the bar examiners. After 3 or 4 years of study, the student is qualified to take the bar exam. The student does not receive a JD or any type of certification, he/she is just permitted to take the bar exam. A pass means licensure as an attorney. Fortunately, I did pass my first time and I am now a qualified guardian ad litem for children!

Having no special skills or passion is a common theme. But it's not tragic. It's fun to learn new skills and learn a trade you can make a living at. There's always something enjoyable about legal work, and you don't need to be passionate to enjoy your work and build up a nice career, you just have to have respect for your work, and continually strive to do it well. I went to law school because the construction industry collapsed in my region back in '06, and I needed find a way to make a living. It was a good decision. But I had savings, and went to an affordable state school in the upper Midwest, so my debt was very manageable. This helped make my legal career more flexible and portable. Thank you for sharing your video. I enjoyed it.

I love how you summarized everything about becoming a lawyer. What i hate about myself is that English is my second language and I really work hard to improve my English skills, however i find it frustrating that I can't really understand every word in English. Also im that type of guy who likes to argue all time and never let anyone prove me wrong because i assure that every info i have searched about is 100% true. Lastly, I love being a defence attorney cause I think solving crimes and stopping violence is my passion and I really want to create a peaceful and loving community. Money is not an issue for me and i doubt it would be hard at the beginning of law school but later on i hope it becomes easier. I just want to know your advice about my issue. Thank you :)

being a defense attorney is difficult work but if you have the passion for it then you should pursue it. would you want to practice in the United States? or a country with English as the main language? Definitely seek to improve your verbal and writing skills because as a defense attorney you will need to speak in front of the judge, jury and opposing counsel as well as writing briefs.

Is there different ways to improve my language skills since you know better and you have experienced everything in law school. I personally think that reading books is an excellent way to improve it but some people tell me that if you don't engage with people who speak different language like English. You might find it extremely hard to learn faster and I don't really go out a lot.

You can find small/mid size firms that require 20-25 billable hours a week minimum. I know of some firms that value work/life balance. Edit: Typically larger firms require 50 billable hours a week. I believe that's what she was talking about when explaining the 60-80 hours. If you have your own practice, you spend 12+ hours a day working.

Great video!! If you're watching and considering going to law school please, please watch and listen carefully! I was like many of you a few years ago and sooooo many people told me to do my research and listen carefully to other lawyers about going to law school. I did, but I don't think I listened enough. I graduated from law school in 2017. I have a decent non-law job now that I got right after graduation but honestly I should not have gone. I don't want to go so far as to say that I'm "haunted" by my decision to go to law school, but I definitely regret it. It's the sacrifice and the time commitment that you really need to pay attention too. Law school and the legal profession really take over your entire life. If you have other hobbies or other interests or other things that are very important to you, then you probably should not go to law school. The reality is, your career will take over your life for many, many years. For some people, that's just fine. They're okay with the sacrifice and are able to put their head down and just grind. But you have to be honest with yourself and really be aware of what you're getting into! The cost of going to law school timewise, moneywise, and stresswise is really not worth it if you're just going to "try it out." Even if you graduate and pass the bar exam, it's a very difficult and competitive career. It's hard to get a job or find your niche. I actually found that most lawyers and law students were NOT outgoing, social people. The trial lawyers are actually a very small percentage of lawyers. Most lawyers I met are introverted anti-social types. That should tell you more about the reality of the profession. Personally, I was definitely an outgoing person and showed a very strong aptitude for trial work. But it's such a small niche of the law, that if you're not fully dedicated and can't make the right connections, it's going to be very hard for you to find your way. However, be sure to talk to as many lawyers (of all types) as you can. Many, many lawyers I talk to have a negative perception of the career (honestly most.) However, there are plenty of others who are fine with it or even happy practicing! Make sure you talk to these people too, but try to get them to be HONEST. Don't settle for the bullshit, scripted, "this is what i'm supposed to say," stock answers. Really get into it with them about the time commitments, stress commitments, and the MONEY. I know it's impolite to ask about money, but my advice is don't be afraid. That's why most people get into this profession. There's too much at stake, and lawyers sacrifice too much to not be honest about discussing money. I'd be wary of lawyers who avoid discussing this aspect of the job.

The reason I want to be a lawyer is I love writing and public speaking. I also like to argue for the rights of what the plaintiff and defendant want or need. Another passion I have is studying the laws of America so the occupation of being a lawyer is perfect for me.

Just like you, it wasn’t my life long dream to be a Lawyer. However, because of my path, sadly I have been caught up in Family Court and I believe knowledge is power so instead of going full steam ahead, I decided to study to be a Paralegal. Thank you for this video. Listening to you was 100% amazing for me today. Thank you so much!

Personally, I'll choose to be a litigation lawyer since I'm quite argumentative and I love having debates, and by "love", I mean LOVE! I'm also pretty confident, especially when I want to prove something and if I want to expose or fight for the truth. Also, I want to serve the people who can't defend themselves, so yes, I want to be a defense attorney. I want to defend those who are being prosecuted, specifically those who are poor and innocent. However, it's just a mere dream of mine. I don't know if I can survive in a law school.

I appreciate this video and your honesty! I think this is good advice for people who are very early in the process of finding out what they want to do. I’m in my 4th year of undergrad and studying for the LSAT. I have to say though, I think it’s also important people consider if the profession they want to get into aligns with their personality type, as well as their perception of what an appropriate career looks like to them, as you mentioned. I get the impression that very little interests you in the realm of law and that you may have been holding back that you don’t really like being a lawyer. Have you considered other possible avenues that you can turn towards? I think you should try your options, especially if my presumption is correct. #1 lesson anyone should take from this video: you need to have an interest in some aspect of the work you’re doing or else you will probably just make your profession sound like drudgery work

It's interesting re-watching this video. I watched your video in 2018 - and was applying to law school. My situation is a bit different. I'm a non-traditional student - am now 51, retired from the military at 49, and headed to law school. I "back planned" my entire move. I wanted to (and still want to) be an ADA. I networked, and interned (while still in the Army - a whole another story) in the DA's office - and retired. Took the LSAT and applied and started in fall of 2019. I'm now a 3L (in the fall) and am going to walk out debt free (thank you GI Bill!) - and have a job waiting for me. But, as you described, my situation is very unusual. Great video - and, again, watching it again, after applying and getting into law school is so very different than as a "OMG, I'm going to law school" pre-student days point of view. Hope you are well.

@@BrittanyTran On the plus side for YOU, you'll have a long and rewarding career. I'll practice for 10 to 15 years. When I was younger - 20's - dated a gal who got into law school, and upon her realizing her life was "leveling up" she .... upgraded. I have had an amazing life, to be sure, but that doubt of "can I do that" is part of what drove me. I'm loving the experience, but at this point (I'm sure you got to that point) I just want to get my bar card and start doing my job. Hope you're well Brittany, and thanks for making this video - it was (and I'm sure will be) very helpful for many folks. Sometimes the things we do make an impact for years to come.

My biggest problem getting into law is that lack of time for family life. I want to have four children and be a mother that has time to spend time with them. But I also don't want to compromise my career. It doesn't help that my partner is doing medicine and wants to get into surgery which requires intense hours. Seems like every career I wish to pursue requires sacrificing a part of myself. It's very discouraging.

Jojo T That's highly unlikely, college is marketed as being essential to succeed in life so highschoolers feel compelled to go. Pretty much all of the people I go to high school with are interested in degrees that require college, and lots of students interested in STEM careers. And I know this may be shocking, but you can be interested in makeup and fashion and simultaneously be a lawyer/doctor/scientist.
