#PermacultureQnA - I posted this a while back, think it got lost, But I live in zone 6a, I was thinking about digging up a 3ft by 5ft pit about 2ft deep. Lining it with hardware cloth, and mixing the soil for sweet potatoes... My goal is the maybe tarp it, cover it with wood chips or bales in the winter to try to keep the roots alive, as I've heard people in the South say they'll come back every year because you always miss some of them... I've not had the best luck, growing only vines and thin sweet potatoes.

Since we just moved in we haven't established a good eco system and we are dealing with tons of bugs. We purchased a cheap small hand held vacuum and go every morning and evening and vaccum up the japanese bettles that a decimating our fruit trees. Slowly but surely we are seeing less and making a dent in next years numbers.

How about those Japanese beetle bags you can buy? I’ve heard they work well, and I think I’ve heard you can dump out and reuse.

Oh boy, I have a good friend that has a scythe instead of a tractor. He is 64 and in incredible shape! Better than most anyone I know. He scythes his animals’ hay in the spring for the following winter. Best workout plan plan ever, I think!

Comment on the pig question, I know Joel Salatin used to put his broiler chickens into barrels full of well water (after being gutted and rinsed) to pre-cool the meat prior to going into the freezer. Maybe a big kitty pool?

#permacultureQ&A William, love all the info and thank you always for sharing your knowledge. How do you recommend dealing with termites? In our old location we put down plenty of organic matter & wood chips and had amazing soil. At our new place we were told the area has termites due to all the trees. Now we are scared to apply woodchips and attract them. We dont have animals yet. Any suggestions? If you covered my question and missed it , I'm sorry. I'm still catching up from our move.

#permacultureQ&A William, we need advice on ground cover for Arizona Sonoran Desert, Scottsdale (Zone 9B) that has just been scorched (charcoal black) by a wild fire. We have about 2 acres that are now devoid of ground cover with sporadic cactus and trees. Cow pea, with a lot of water, goes well, but I can't water that much acreage. The area was previously covered mostly by Bromus (grass) that has nasty spurs. Monsoon rains are hopefully coming in the next few weeks. Need a readily available seed and a planting strategy........BTW, my wife and I met you and your Dad at SRF a couple of years ago...Love all of you!!! Thanks for all of the advice over the years.

I use one of those flame weeders for poison ivy. The urishol oil makes it highly sensitive to flame. I bet if you didn't hold the "turbo" down so much you wouldn't have had so much collateral damage. The flame on its own is pretty effective.

Hmm, I've heard of people getting lung poisoning from breathing in fumes of poison ivy being burned. I have some to get rid of, maybe it's not a big deal if it's just a couple plants?

@@joshua511 yeah, I heard that too and I can now confidently say it's completely false. I've burned acres at this point. I think breathing in any large amount of smoke (poison ivy or not) can be toxic.

@@ThePermacultureConsultant I understand, I planted my trees from seedlings, the legumes and non-legumes. I'm sure I could have messed some up but not all (I hope). All were planted in the same month the non-legumes are now twice my height and the legumes at my knees. All the best!

Thank you for talking about the edits. I watched MIGardener yesterday and noticed it. Whoever does his editing is putting in miniature cuts in between his pauses. When I was listening, it sounded smooth. However, visually it was distracting almost to the point of being nauseating. I hope this is a short-lived fad.

Yes beer in a cup or bowl buried in the ground with about 3/4 to an inch above ground. Think of it as a small pool. Bonus tip crushed or blended egg shells then sprinkle in a circle around the plants you want protected.
