Just bought a 2007 after my 2012 was totaled by a young girl. The 3rd gens did come equipped with back up cameras and nav and all of that, but it was optional depending on trim level. Also the 2015 fixed the water pump/head gasket issue, making it the best 3rd gen. So far I actually prefer the 3rd gen to the 2nd gen for a few reasons. 3rd gen is quieter, smoother, has physical climate buttons instead of being on the screen, has more information near the speedo letting you know how much throttle you can use and stay in EV mode, and it could also play music from my phone which the 2nd gen can't. Also I think the 3rd gen has better seats. But so far the second gen is a really great car with very few compromises. These are just little gripes that I can live with. Especially considering I bought this car for 4 grand compared to the 13 grand I paid for my 2012. So for the value there isn't any car that beats a second gen prius. Cheaper than almost anything, more reliable than almost anything, lower maintenance than almost anything, and better gas mileage than almost anything. Smart people who are financially conscious buy these cars and drive them until they break, fix them and keep driving them. It's really the perfect cheap commuter car. Buying anything else is really kind of foolish if you're just looking for a good A to B vehicle. I have my fun vehicles too, but for work and long trips the Prius is a highway hero.

I have two 2005 Gen 2's. I've only had to change the inverter pumps and HV battery on one. The other one needed a little more because it sat too long before I bought it. So the fuel bladder had shrunk. I replaced the fuel tank and filler neck, combination meter, inverter pump, ABS module, and HV pack. It's practically like a new car now. @@Ion-tj6cl Different Generations have different issues. I've mostly worked on 2nd and 3rd Gen. You said you're looking at a 2nd Gen Prius 4? What year is it? This video and my cars are 2nd Gen Prius (2005-2009). If you have a Gen 4 (2016-2022) I haven't worked on those. @nothingherefolks6218

@@Ion-tj6cl Ok, I understand now. Lol. I would say that the Gen 2 is the most reliable one. For a 2009 with low miles, it just depends on how well it was maintained. The inverter water pump might be something you'll want to keep on the shelf (Or in the trunk). These are made mostly of plastic and is usually one of the first things to go. It's very easy to replace. The engine is solid. Just keep the oil changed and topped off. The coil packs will occasionally need to be replaced. For a used Prius, I'd probably proactively replace the coil packs and plugs. If the ABS is working now, just be sure that the brake fluid is full and brakes work properly. It's very obvious when the ABS module has an issue. It'll light up the dash like a Christmas tree.

I have taken it from Maine to Virginia in 10 hrs at 80 plus mph then camped out in the back. now at 230+K and runs perfect still. Just out $5k into new exhaust, springs, shocks, coolant valve etc. to keep it going another $200k. much better looking than the Prius today with all those weird sharp angles and ugly vertical slots in front. get good tires that dont wiggle and the handling is acceptable.

It is my favorite sedan vehicle I have had so far. The other common failure is the VFD display (displays the MPH and other info) and that is a PITA to fix as you have to take the whole dashboard apart (to replace 1-3 capacitors!!??!) I have a 2009 Toyota Prius and I've had a lot of 12v batteries die on me. Granted I live in Florida and my garage gets pretty hot in the summer! I had a Hybrid Water Pump go out and I took my car to Toyota and they charged me over $700 to fix it! Never take your car to the dealership to fix a water pump! I learned later that you can do it yourself for under $200! That experience taught me to learn all I can about my car and to fix it myself! My car has over 137,000 miles and now I'm putting in a used remanufactured ABS Actuator! It is pretty expensive and I had to purchase some new tools along with high voltage class 0 gloves to open up the converter! I'll get the part tomorrow. I could not get the new remanufactured part that I wanted because right now you just can't get them! Toyota's new part is $1,134! I don't trust buying their part only because this seems to be a common issue on these cars! Mine is coming from eBay.

I own two 2nd generation Priuses (2007. and 2009.). I'm very satisfied. I think it is still the best Prius of all 5 generations. Why? I wanted to buy a third generation Prius after the second gen. However, the difference in the powertrain is not so great, and the interior design of the second gen is significantly better. I love the simple lines of my Prius, the good visibility to the front, to the sides and to the rear. In the third generation, visibility is slightly reduced, and the unusual central part visually reduces the size of the interior. Then came the fourth generation, which is simply ugly to me. The external appearance is not a problem for me, because once I sit in the car, I can't see what it looks like from the outside. But I don't like the interior at all. Instead of simple lines, on the doors and center console as it is on my Priuses, the fourth generation is too "playful", impractical and frivolous. So I gave up on the fourth generation. I thought it would be best to make a modernized version of the second gen. And now the fifth generation has arrived. And indeed, the basic exterior lines are very reminiscent of the second generation, with the fact that they are more modern and look great. The interior looks good. I think it would be better if the lines were even simpler and straighter, but it looks nice. The powertrain is superb. But... Toyota, why...? You put too much on style. Yes, the style of the new Prius is beautiful, but why did you lower the height of the car? Instead of reducing it, you should have raised it by 2-3 cm, let's say to 152 cm, i.e. to the height of the first generation Auris. It would still look very nice, good style. It would lose a little on aerodynamics, consumption and performance. But all that is negligible. It would give a lot more space. As far as I can see, the glass surfaces have decreased, and thus the visibility. Visibility is important not only for safety, but also for driving pleasure. I think a mistake was made because the car was lowered and the glass surfaces were reduced. Looks like I'll still be sticking with my second generation Priuses. Despite their age, they still run like new. Comfortable, with good visibility, reliable. Greetings from Croatia.

Toyota videos state the larger 1.8 liter engine was intended to lower fuel consumption on the highway, by lowering rpm’s. Perhaps this untested consequence was the reason the water pump fails. As in slightly too much pressure wear over time.
@thatzfever7294
2 жыл бұрын
The reason why the water pumps go bad on the Gen 3s is because they are electric driven opposed to the Gen 2s where they are the old school mechanical water pumps that are undeniably more reliable. There's really no signs when an electric water pump goes bad. I think that was a horrible design for a Prius as they are not performance cars.

For anyone whos wanting to buy a gen 2. Please be weary and ask questions about the hybrid battery. Dont worry too much about engine and transmission, just make sure the oil was changed and regular maintenance. But please ask questions like if the battery was every replaced with a new one or reconditioned one. Most likely if you buy high mileage gen 2 your gonna need to spend 1.5k on battery because they will die out. Reconditioned batteries are pointless so dont do that. New ones are the only way. Dont get tricked into these reconditioned batteries with crappy warranties. Thats how those reconditions make their money off of warranties. They know the batteries will die so thats why they offer your warranty, and if you dont opt for warranty then your screwed with a shitty battery. Dr prius battery life is good to test it when purchasing. Take obd2 reader with you and scan everything. Also look for water leaks in 12v battery area and spare tire area. Thats my rant. Saying all this cause i bought a gen 2, drove for a couple months and hybrid battery screwed my ass. So i sold it luckily i had warranty from previous owner. If your worried about battery and dont drive often then dont even get prius. Only get prius if you drive alot. Go for 5th gen camry or any other reliable honda or toyota. Cheers

Thanks for your time and knowledge on your video. Just purchased my first Toyota Prius 2 days ago. Generation 2 - 2005, with 160,000. Miles - $4,500. I had taken my time looking for one, purchased from a private party - if purchased through a car dealer asking price would have been $6,000+. FYI simply take your time upon looking for a Prius - good deals are out there. 👍

Have an '09 i got with 160,000 miles, it has 220,000 now, iv changed the fluid of course, the tiny battery in the trunk, the center screen i got used online for like $450, cant believe how easy such a futuristic care is to work on, you can get to the main battery in 15 minutes to clean the vent system, even the center screen you can have out in under 10 just with watching a video on it. I have no idea how old the main battery is, i give her the beans driving everyday in the city to work and get 39mpg, even better in the summer when the pack isn't cold starting out. I like the look of the 2nd gen mainly because it doesnt look fast and I have a theory a self respecting cop will never pull it over lol.

Recently bought a 2007 /105k miles and I couldn't be happier! I took it straight to my mechanic (Toyota specialist) after I bought it and told him to "fix everything", but it was barely anything to fix even though the previous owner had been quite... shall we say relaxed with maintenance. I will say that I’m terrified that the hybrid battery will just randomly die though, but that’s all in my head tbh. Car has been running super smooth with no issues whatsoever. The gas milage has actually been fantastic as well, I top it up when it's down to 3-4 dots and that's about every couple of months. I think it identifies as a Tesla 😅

Funny thing with hybrid battery, you can get cells for cheap like 20$ or so and replace them for cheap as well. Of course there would be no warranty and it might not last 8-10 years, but it definitely is a cheap option to get it back to nominal performance.

I used to hate the older prius but now I have come to love them. They replaced the gen 1 Honda insight in my heart because those are getting harder and harder to find in good working order. I love how cheap these are now and even if the battery is blown up they only cost like $1000 to replace and you can probably get one with a dead battery for less than $2000.

There's warning lights on the dashboard for a reason as somebody who's owned a Gen 2 Prius. Yes my water pump did go out in my gen too and I did have to replace it and it caused no further issues. I've also owned a gen 3 and yes the water pump did go out and it didn't go out completely. They still pump but only very slowly when they go out and mine gave me thousands of miles of warning that my water pump was going out as long as you pay attention to the gauges in your gen 3 Prius and you see the high coolant temperature light come on and you back off once that high coolant temperature light comes on and if it stays on and the check engine light comes on. If you just pull over to the side of the road for a few minutes, maybe 10 minutes or so. Do not shut the car off. Leave the car turned on and ready mode. It will keep from running the gasoline engine. Most likely cuz it's a gen 3 and it tries to keep its battery at 60% state of charge all the time. Even when it should be using power from the battery to help drive you down the road. It generally doesn't unless you're doing City driving or unless the batteries at a really high state of charge and as long as you pay attention to the dashboard and you pull over when the check engine light comes on because the high court temperature light is on and you sit there on the side of the road for a few minutes with the car in the ready mode so the water pump could continue to circulate water slowly through the cooling system to help cool the engine off. You can gimp it home but if it gets to the point where the check engine light comes on or even starts flashing most likely you will have to replace the head gasket down the road. I did replace the head gasket in my 2012 Prius and that was at 263,000, mi. It drove perfectly fine. No head gasket issues to $446,000 mi. Just because the water pump goes out in your 2012 Prius or your gen 3, Prius does not mean that you need to replace the engine. The head gasket was $3,800 to replace. It was going to be $6,500 to replace the engine and after the Head gasket was replaced. They did a compression test on my car and said it tested out perfectly normal and had nice high compression across all four cylinders. This guy does seem like the type of guy who would not bother paying attention to the dashboard in the car and would ignore warning lights coming on on the dashboard and keep driving the car as if it was normal and running the car until it overheated to the point where it caused a head gasket failure then which yes then it may require you replace the engine cuz there would be a possibility of warping in the block and almost certainly a warped head at that point. So it would just be cheaper and easier to replace the entire engine versus remachining the block and getting a new head as well as replacing the head gasket but yes I do agree with him that the Gen. 2. Priuses are more bulletproof. The one problem with them is if your inverter goes out it's $8,000 to replace the damn thing whereas it's $3,500 in a Gen 4 priester place and it's about $4,200 in a gen 3 purrius to replace the inverter but all you need to do is pay attention to the warning lights on the dashboard and when you get that little red warning light on the dashboard that comes on that looks kind of like a boat because there's a little wavy lines next to it and it seems like it has a mass sticking out that is high coolant temperature and when that light comes on you need to try to back off of the car and slow down a little bit to help reduce the waste energy which ends up being in the form of heat in the system to help keep things from overheating and if the high coolant temperature light stays on and is persistent then you need to pull over on the side of the road and if the high coolant temperature light comes on and then the check engine light comes on then you do need to pull over on the side of the road and without shutting the car off let it sit there for 5 minutes and up to even 15 minutes without shutting the car off because the pump is not completely dead. It still works but it just has very low flow and let the car sit there and run the radiator fan to cool off the hot coolant and the radiator to then cool off the block or the inverter which if it's a gen 3 you really don't need cooling on the inverter because it really does not spend much time running in electric mode and it generates virtually. No heat in the winter. The thermal siphon cooling on the inverter is all the cooling effect. You need to keep the inverter cool when driving around in cold weather and mind you. I'm a full-time rideshare driver putting hundreds of miles on my car on a virtually daily basis driving it around and I have checked these things before and what I'm talking about is stuff that is my own personal experiences. Don't be like this kid and ignore the warning lights on the dashboard and just keep driving until the car quits cuz you will create much bigger problems then.

A couple of things to bear in mind regarding GenII Prii: The instrument cluster is subject to a bad capacitor which can cause it to go blank and manifest as a couple of strange malfunctions in the car, such as being unable to turn it off. A person with a good soldering iron and some precise soldering skills can fix it; you have to dismantle the dash to get to it. The center multi-function display is subject to micro cracks in its connectors, causing it to go blank and not respond. This disables several features, including AC control. NOTE: if your AC is on when the screen goes blank, it stays on. You just can't change the fan speed or temperature. You can still engage the defroster via the steering wheel button. There are a couple of specialists who can repair these things. The inverter coolant pump can die on you, causing the car to display the Red Triangle of Death. Pull over immediately. Fortunately, replacing it is actually pretty easy and the part is not terribly expensive. With the exception of the inverter coolant pump, the car is remarkably flexible in shrugging off assorted component failures; it will keep soldiering on like a battered old truck. Take care of it, and it'll take care of you.

Thanks for the info. Got a 3rd Gen Prius V with 247,000 miles on it. Along with disappearing coolant (cylinder 1 misfire), the traction battery is pretty much dead as the dash lights up and the dreaded POA80 code comes up on the scanner along with an indication that cylinders 1, 2, and 3 random misfires are happing. Should I just cut my losses and dump this thing or just get a rebuilt battery and just keep driving it?
