Isn't it usually when we ask people whether or not we should pursuit something, we already made up our minds deep down and are secretly searching for affirmation? I cantch myself doing that all the time. You know you're hooked on something when either reaction, the positive and the bad all fuel your desire even further.

A thru hike is a big commitment, but doing the Te Araroa last year was definitely the best decision I made in my life. The road walking is split up into many smaller sections, so sometimes you end up walking on a road for a few hours until you drop into another Backcountry section. Just the highway parts are a bit annoying, or the big towns, with big trucks passing at high speeds, but once you get further into the trail, many of the roads lead through AMAZING landscapes and if you have a good trail family around, you will do those sections in no time! Many people from overseas come to walk the Te Araroa every year, so you should definitely give it a chance to experience your own country, to feel how small and massive, diverse and impressive NEW ZEALAND can be! If all you're doing is to think about whether to walk or not walk the trail, just get started walking, be free, walk the forests and climb the mountains and enjoy the purity of nature. Anyways, you will make the right decision! Hike your own hike, Rob

Three years ago I came up with an idea to hike around Lithuania. Only in October last I finally made up my mind to do this. Initially supposed to start in May 2020. But due to pandemic had to push it back to August. I would like to note that there was no previously marked trail, so I spent couple of months drawing my own trail route. On some days i could not escape walking along the busy roads. It made me nuts. But as the saying goes "no pain, no gain". Before the trip I started following a number of local hikers on Instagram from whom I received a lot of support. Some of them came along to meet me on the road and even hiked with me for a couple of days. I succesfuly completed the hike around Lithuania in 41-day (1372km). Bottom line: If you are healthy, got budget and time then any trail can be enjoyable. No matter if it is well known or the one that you draw yourself. Good luck!

Hey Elina, I was going to start the TA this month, but i am still stranded in the Netherlands unfortunately. Don't let something like roadwalking put you down, i think a lesson most hikers learn if i may quote another youtube colleague of yours is to "embrace the suck". You will appreciate the roof of your tent and a warm meal most after a day of rain. As for the people, i think some soltitude can be magic as well. You seem to be an amazing human being that attracts even more amazing human beings, so i have the feeling you'll be fine. If you are not doing it this year you might spot me on the trail in 2021.

"If not now, then when?" From an astrological perspective we are in a double retrograde cycle with planets Mercury (thinking) and Mars (action) hence it is hard right now to make decisions, plus find the physical momentum to motivate one self. Perhaps wait until Mid November to make a final decision, once these planets station direct. I think you will get your answer then, or by early December, or at the latest the first week of January! If it were me I would probably wait until January 2021 to set out on the hike. Also if you have a hunch that something feels off in regards to doing the hike right now, then listen to that intuit - we have those for good reasons, even if we never find out why we are guided not to do things in a specific time frame. Timing is everything! Love what you do and how you execute it - thank you for the inspiration

Road walking through a country is not necessarily bad. Read the book, "A Walk Across America" by Peter Jenkins. (Written and hiked in a early 1970's but the book is still in print) A hike is so much more than a trail, it's the people, the culture, their stories... Get to know your country, tell their stories, and pass on the knowledge to the world!

I hiked Te Araroa in 2017/2018 and I absolutely loved it, regardless of the road sections it was the people along the way and the landscapes and remoteness that really made it for me as well as knowing that I was hiking a trail so young as a complete trail. I met a Moari lassie that when a storm was starting she ushered me and a friend into her house and fed us tea and biscuits until the storm passed, another Moari guy gave me a stack of food he had as I came out of the Tararua Ranges and he was amazed by my story. I was stocking up on water on Christmas Day at a families water supply they have left open for hikers and they dragged me onto their homestead and fed me the biggest meal I had on trail, let me have a shower, do laundry and stay the night before sending me off the next day after a big breakfast and a pack heavy with leftovers so yes, very much hike Te Araroa. Bruce hiked TA the same year as myself although people I hiked with met him I never had the good fortune of bumping into him. I am also thinking of coming back and hiking northbound this time just to get the different perspective.

Elina - you absolute legend in getting Gamling involved in this. I thought when I did my NZ year in 2004 that seeing places where LOTR was filmed was cool. Bringing in an actor goes one step further. The Tongariro circuit looks much better in the snow - for me there were hundreds of day trippers walking past me and my 25kg backpack as they just did a one-dayer and I was there for four (I think) days. Really looking forward to see your trip on Te Araroa, it's on my bucket list, which I believe is longer than the years I have available!

tongariro looks stunning in Elinas vid with snow for sure, I show in one of my videos, I had mist. It was bizarre did not get to see any of the beauty that the brochures show! The TA is New Zealand's greatest great walk. Of course you should aspire to do it; some parts are less attractive than others but overall it is a great experience and a very serious undertaking. Personally the South Island has it all in spades and is as good as any in the worlds great long trails. Certainly go do it! if time is short at least do section hikes on the southern sections; you've done the PCT with Ul gear and you will be just fine on trail in summer and autumn but winter and spring is a whole new ball game as any winter alpine adventure is. I hitch hiked all around New Zealand Aotearoa after I finishied uni (Otago) and while I always loved the NZ outdoors, I ended up walking along plenty of roads to get to my destination. And some of those roads were spectacular (West Coast), some rather dull (outer limits of Christchurch), some were intensely exciting (Central Otago highlands at dusk), and some were the most melancholy experiences of my life (walking south from Auckland after seeing off a girlfriend I'd met on my travels who was heading to Aussie). All of it has burned in my memory for the last 25 years as the happiest time of my life. (And I always got rides to my destination, sometimes because I had walked myself out into the middle of nowhere and people felt sorry for me!) Do it!
