I have a bike fit coming up for the purpose of finding out what would be my optimal stem height and length for a 54cm frame. Of course if you have several bicycles, that may vary according to seat tube angle and top tube length. I want to find out where about mine should be. I wouldn't recommend anyone to slam their stem until they visit a biker fitter because you may be setting yourself up for physical problems. You may not have the mobility in the hips, hamstrings and elsewhere and lower back pain wouldn't just be an issue, your neck as well. You want to be comfortable and pain free, not cool looking.

How did the fitting go?

@@ecphysiotherapy8012 Glad you asked. It went exceptionally well. He found my true saddle height and he adjusted my cleats. His philosophy on stem height and length is based on a persons mobility in their hips and lumbar region. He said I lacked mobility and work on that with me since he happened to be a yoga instructor as well. In two weeks my hand numbness diminished to almost gone which shows that bike fit isn't always the culprit, it maybe the person themselves which was my case. He saw that I had too much curve to my back when on the bike and wanted me to tilt my pelvis to get a more of a flat back which was huge, doing that virtually resolved the issue of numb hands and now I can even ride with my hands in the drops comfortably. At this point I am going to take up yoga to make sure I keep riding till I am an old man.

His cool factor has been reduced 25x (i.e. 25mm) with this bike fit :(

Does adding pedal spacers accomplish the same as above? Wondering why you didn’t go that route. Also, is the seminar available on zoom for the audience who live in the US.

Yes pedal spacers will also help for hip impingement/restricted hip flexion. I would use spacers if there was poor knee tracking from the front view. In this scenario his knees were tracking relatively well and if we stanced his feet out that may possibly cause some knee issues. Hmm, zoom is a good call actually. Though I don't have the proper equipment to do that for the time being. Perhaps I'll upload the slides on my webpage afterwards.

Amazing stuff, too bad I missed the workshop :/ . Is there any specific sort of streching you would recommend to increase flexibilty? I started doing some for over a week now and I don't know if it's wether placebo effect or what but I feel way more comfortable on the drops now (and maybe low back pain looks like it's sort of going away). My main focus with flexibilty is obviously hips/harmstrings to avoid this sort of rocking. Cheers :)

Hey lunchipunchi98, you've given me some ideas for some future videos. To help improve hamstrings length I would first look at: 1) reducing the amount of time spent sitting, 2) work on some eccentric exercises for the hamstrings like a stiff legged deadlift and 3) some sustained static stretching of the posterior chain like a downward dog.

Great content. Just awesome. The cultural aspect of bike looks is one the challenges I happen to encounter in my shop. The seminar? How do we apply/joint it?

Is your bike fitting seminar a hands on our own bike seminar or more of a listen watch and learn seminar?

I plan to spend a short portion of the session explaining things on a powerpoint. I'm hoping to have 1-2 people set up on the trainer for a demo. We likely won't have time to have everyone on the trainer though.

Slam your stem and destroy the second-hand value of your bike..

Hey RP, resale is something else to consider for sure. But I think if you're going to be riding your bike why not prioritize the fit for your goals. If the goal is getting racy and aero for a crit/road race then it's important to adjust the height of the front end appropriately.
