"Should I Wear A Weightlifting Belt?" (Pros And Cons)
www.SeanNal.com/articles/training/is-a-weightlifting-belt-necessary.php
Should you wear a lifting belt during your workouts? Is a weightlifting belt necessary?
This is a very common issue that gets brought up on my videos or in the emails that people send to me.
The central purpose of a weightlifting belt is to increase intra-abdominal pressure as a means of improving core stability, which provides additional lower back support and allows you to lift more total weight.
Although there's no black and white answer here, my overall view is that most lifters do not need to use a weightlifting belt the majority of the time.
A lifting belt should only be looked at as one extra tool that certain trainees can make use of in select situations.
In the following situations I definitely wouldn't recommend the use of a lifting belt:
- You're still in the beginning stages of your training career.
- You're training primarily to improve athletic performance.
- You're working with light/moderate loads in higher rep ranges.
In all of these cases, I'd suggest relying solely on your body's own "internal lifting belt" instead, which are the muscles of your core.
To do this, you'll want to make sure to "brace your core" before each rep of your major compound lifts (like the squat, deadlift and overhead press) by drawing a big breath into your belly, locking the air in tightly, and then pushing your stomach outward as you perform the movement. Exhale after each rep and repeat.
When CAN a weightlifting belt be used as part of your workouts?
There are a few situations where it can make sense...
When to use a lifting belt:
- You're an advanced lifter well past the beginning stages.
- You've progressed without a belt to lifting very heavy weights relative to your body weight.
- You've mastered the perfect form on all of your exercises.
- You're using 85% or more of your one rep max on a big compound lift.
If all of the above is true, then a lifting belt can be used to assist you on those all out heavy sets to maximize performance and reduce injury risk.
Aside from that, the only other situation a weightlifting belt can be used is for those with pre-existing lower back injuries if you do find that it helps reduce the pain.
So, is a lifting belt necessary? It's never mandatory, but can be used in certain scenarios here and there when appropriate.
