While still offensive, I think that John's line about the natives being "cunning but not intelligent" is supposed to be ironic at John's expense, because he is immediately afterwards captured by the natives with very little effort. I see it as a case of arrogance on John's part so he can immediately be proven wrong, but unfortunately that's easy to misinterpret and kids could easily get the wrong idea from it.

While I acknowledge that the Disney Tiger Lily had limitations, no way am I gonna say that the 1960 version which cast a blonde-haired white actress as Tiger Lily was the more progressive of the two. I'm actually wild about the design Disney TL got that made her look decidedly nonwhite rather than try to make her look like the other kids in the film. And I say this as a non-white person with Indigenous/Mestizo blood who watched the 1953 Disney movie and DID groan at the depiction of Native Americans, but who could acknowledge TL as badass at the same time. I also think that the point made in the tweet referenced is a bit of an overreach. I seriously doubt that they were trying to make any serious point about Native women - especially considering that this version of TL is an actual child vs. a young woman in the original. She's the first nonwhite heroine in the Disney canon and her design literally figured into the Gong Show art for Pocahontas which was greenlit by Katzenberg on the spot and which - while Pocahontas has its own problems with representation - laid the groundwork for the likes of Mulan and Moana. So IMO that's pretty cool

You rock very wise observations. With my first acting 🎭 experience in the “Peter Pan Play”, I realized it in 5th grade but was only a child 👧🏽 playing an Indian role because I looked like Tiger Lilly and I am a Black Indian from Texas🦉🏕🪶🧘🏽♀️

For Hook (1991), Steven Spielberg should've put a full-grown Tiger Lily into the film, with Cher as the casting choice.

To be fair, yes, John Darling does call the "Indians" savages and not intelligent, but that's clearly his opinion only, which the film clearly demonstrates is false by how easily John and the boys are captured. John ends up looking like an idiot with egg on his face, as the "Indians" turn out to be smarter than he is.

Tigers are from India, Pakistan, and Russia. My father’s parents were from Russian. My great great great grandmother was a Native American. Her daughter was biracial. Mariah was alive during the Native American Holocaust. Her daughter was called Danny by my grandmother and my mom. Tiger Lily is not a Native American name. Tigers only existed in the United States until we had zoos. So I find the name Tiger Lily ridiculous. It’s a flower and probably the name is from Europe. I am white, but my aunt has Native American DNA. And I am realizing that Peter Pan seems prejudiced. I knew this girl who played Wendy. The must be every girls dream. I think of Michael Jackson saying that he never had a childhood and he started Never Never Land. I like Michael Jackson and it would be nice if he were still alive.
