Thank you all for watching. This is most definitely an option as far as preamps. The audio in this entire video was just my UA SD-1, Cloudlifter and Apollo x4.. No gain increase, no compression and no eq. This is the natural sound of the cloudlifter CL-2.. For more information check it out here: sweetwater.sjv.io/Qy1nd6

I use a GoXLR (MIDAS preamp) and CL1 for my EV-RE20: look, I may be biased, but I prefer the sound that results from using the CL1 vs using only MIDAS preamp. A side by side comparison with spectrum analyzer would solve the problem by giving an objective reference point

I recommend the CL-Z model! Probably can’t go wrong with any of them though

cloudlifters are becoming more and more unnecessary as time goes on. the sm7b needs 60db of clean gain, 4-6 years ago most interfaces only had 50-56 so cloudlifters were a must. now interfaces are reaching that mark. the new 4th gen scarlett has 69db and ssl 2 has 62. That being said, this is still a good buy if you record something like podcasts or audio books or something where it's just your voice by itself.

It's still great for ribbon mics

I look at Cloudlifters differently. Even if your interface/preamp technically has enough gain, you may not want to push them into their upper range. The cheaper ones tend to get noisy and the expensive ones will get more colored in the upper gain ranges. You never want noise, and sometimes you want preamp color and sometimes you don't. Cloudlifters are tools that give you more options when dialing in the sweet spot with whatever preamp, interface, or mixer you're using.
