I agree, it's mostly about figuring out what you need and what makes the most difference. I just "upgraded" to a Nikon D300 for $90 plus $30 for a CF card to go with it, I'm mainly using it for my kids' sports and recitals, plus a bit of wildlife / landscape. I don't need ISO 25000, or live view, or video. 51 AF points is plenty, and 12MP is more than enough to share online and make the occasional print. I shared a bunch of photos from my son's last 2 hockey games, and I got nothing but compliments on the quality of the images.

There are frequently 200 days of rain where i live. Some ability to not die in a sprinkle is basically required for me. I bought my Nikon D3x in 2019 for £620 U.K. (which is about 10% of its original U.S. Dollar price at its launch in 2008.) I'd heard KZitemrs say it was rubbish, but I was curious to try it at that price. It turns out that it's still my favourite camera for studio flash. I got my D3s for under £500 which is also about 10% of the U.S. Dollar price at launch in 2009 (used D3s bodies even cheaper now.) I recently got a mirrorless Z6 (which I bought used for £850.) It does video & low light pretty well, but overall, I just don't love using it or the look of its output - like I love the two old D3 cameras.

The D7100 or D7200 are going fairly cheap these days and are amazing sensors compared to the D90. @@Augnos I'm not familiar with Canon lenses but maybe it's just best to buy those 3rd party lenses then. Sure enough, it was $500 cheaper a year later, but I have no regrets, especially working now as a professional. The R6II will last me for 5 more years, at the very least. And my current backup? A 5D classic, because it was cheap, full-frame, and still takes great photos nearly 20 years later.

For a professional it often makes sense to buy new cameras as you wear out the old ones, as long as you're making a profit. The original 5D sells for around $150 US when they actually sell. I think gear loses value slightly faster in New Zealand because selling the really old gear locally doesn't get as much coverage as it would on eBay.

I really don’t know why this channel was recommended because the presenter is nothing more than, in his own words, “An Armchair Critic”. Offering financial advice as to what to buy or what not to buy is nothing less than short sighted. All the math in the world won’t make a good photographer in the same way a camera won’t. But, education will. Not once in this self indulgent monologue did the presenter suggest a new photographer spend some money on education. Based on the drivel I’ve heard presented today this “best in class” photographer/presenter would probably consider that a huge waste of money also.
