This is actually what I'm doing with my pc. Got a prebuilt on Christmas '22, a couple of months ago I upgraded the CPU as I needed better editing performance. Now, because of a cheap motherboard (was decent so far, but started giving vrm temps issues) I had to upgrade that too, but since I just got an am4 CPU, I could not afford a whole new platform. Next upgrade will be PSU and GPU, so with the old components I'll build a second system to stream 😅

Still runs games 1080p but it does throttle a bit, ive cleaned it, replaced thermal paste on cpu and gpu, and even checked tje power supply to make sure it was still outputting enough (we all know cheap supplies can cause issues, and weird things happen with computers sometimes) so either I'm horrible at cleaning pc parts or it's time for an upgrade. The bad ones aren't bad because they made mistakes. They know damn well it's bad. They just want to misrepresent their product as something it isn't. Bad systems maybe built with an old 10 year old i7 CPU, a GPU not made for gaming, and a power supply brand no one has heard of before. If the platform is old and that means if you want to upgrade you need a new CPU, new motherboard and new ram, at which point you may as well bought from a reputable business in the first place.

And case/layout! I got a prebuilt a couple years ago with a Ryzen 7 5800X and a GTX 3070 which were pretty banger at the time, and though I can always upgrade things as needed. But this was a massive mistake; the case only came with one outrageously loud case fan and basically nowhere to mount additional fans for intake/exhaust unless I drilled my own mounting holes or used zip ties. Only 1 open fan header on the board also. And the 5800X runs HOT so with this setup it was basically always hitting 95C and thermal throttling. Upgrading at this point would be new case, mobo, maybe PSU, and at that point might as well build a whole new system!

Buying a pre built that has a crappy power supply is more than just upgrading a few parts cause having to unplug all the power cables is basically half of the build😅. Also most super cheap PSUs are not modular and if it is, you shouldn't reuse the old power supply cables especially if they're from a super cheap PSU, so you're gonna have to unplug all the cables anyways.

Prebuilts frequently have specifically shitty components, sometimes that you can't even buy as a regular consumer. The last prebuilt I bought (because 30-series GPUs were unbuyable at the time) had a variant of a Gigabyte motherboard that literally does not exist on Gigabyte's website, so I could legitimately not upgrade the CPU because I couldn't update the bios of the motherboard. Gigabyte literally did not support that motherboard. There were bios updates for non-variant versions of the same motherboard but those weren't compatible. It was a pretty reputable prebuilt too. Don't buy prebuilts, build your PC. Any excuse not to is bad, because it's cheaper, it's very easy to do and it will be better than a prebuilt.

I'm gonna be honest here. You want some CPU headroom. If you're CPU bound your frame latency goes all kinds of crazy. Then cap your FPS at your desired frame rate and watch your input latency disappear.

That's actually bad advice in my opinion. LTT did tests if static electricity is a problem, and it absolutely isn't. Even a taser didn't do much damage (plus the front panel is right against the metal of the case, so it's grounded either way). - Make sure your fans are in the right orientation. - make sure you buy good thermal paste (like arctic or noctua) - make sure to peel off all the plastic on coolers - (subjective) Buy a very clean looking case that you are sure will be something you want to see on your desk in 5 years. - buy a nice desk

I really think 4080 and up is the lowest future proof 5+ years (maybe) cards. That’s if people want to keep up with AAA titles you can thank unreal engine 5 as well as gaming one up man ship each new title release. I don’t see longevity in anything else because they have to already cheat with DLSS or FSR for 4K on the latest titles and 4080s are borderline at best.
