This. I've just retired my 1060 6GB, after struggling to get more than 60 FPS in a game that released this year. The fact it's been getting me 90-200fps in pretty much everything I've throw at it (I use "competitive settings" in most online games) is testament to the quality of the card. Possibly the best $250 I've spent on a component in as long as I can remember.

Because since you got your 1060, gaming was basically stuck in 2017 - this is really hard to see some game that is so different from average Unity 2017 or Unreal Engine 4 title so it will be justified to require even 3060 for 1080p 60fps.

I'm still adjusting to a higher budget for GPUs. However, looking at pricing, I'm not seeing a huge difference between the 3060 and 4060. The key advantages I can see are being able to do video editing and deep learning locally vs paying for compute time on a remote server. Gaming is another advantage of course for those who have the time for it.

The RTX 3060 is just that solid, dependable, best bang for your buck card. Now don't get me wrong, can you get a bigger, better card that will get you a bit more performance? Yeah of course but this card will play an AAA game with high FPS at 1080p or 1440p without breaking a sweat. I play Fortnite and I average 170fps with all of my settings on high with a couple on medium no problem. I can get wayyy more if I turn those settings down of course as well. If you're new to PC building or PCs in general and you were considering an RTX 3060 but everybody is trying to persuade you to go bigger but all you need it for is gaming and some multitasking, you're completely fine with this card. There's a weird culture in this space where people feel like they NEED the biggest and best cards as soon/shortly after they come out.
@DannysTechChannel

I disagree. It’s not currently the best bang for your buck. If you’re looking at new GPUs, AMD offers much better value in this price class. The 3060 is over 2 years old and hasn’t even reached its original MSRP. Unless you’re buying it used, there are better options. You’re right, most people don’t need better than this level GPU though.
@juicecan6450

i bought a 3060 myself as it was the only MSRP card and it was the only price tag that didnt make me feel like a clown for buying it at the time. It has it's shortcomings though I feel. this card is barely able to run my modded Skyrim (200ish mods, rookie numbers for this game lol) at 60fps. Like it does give a stable 60 normally, but then drops sharply to 45-50 when I enter forests (4K Quixel megascan textures are to blame) which was a bit of a turn off, and Hogwarts legacy and CP2077 are also games where it can only manage 1080p high. Ultra brings it down to 45 ish fps. Now I'm not an Ultra maniac, but ultra settings are kinda indicative of how well the card will do in the upcoming years, and with UE5 being adopted, I'm a little uncertain. It's an amazing card. Just not the 1080p champ that the 1060 was for a while when it was out

Most people are trying not to seem obsolete, and that's tough when the technology changes so quickly. I've only been a gamer for a short time so I'm new, but I watch a lot of these types of videos and I agree that it seems like they are all always pushing the next, latest thing and talking as though if you DON'T have it then you're not a real gamer. The changes are coming hard and fast every several months. And every 'expert' on the internet has an opinion on why you have to buy the latest thing. It gets a bit tricky when we are being told that we need GPUs that cost over US$1,000 and in some cases close to or more than $2,000, which is just ridiculous! Would we even notice or care all that much that a game stutters a bit if the experts weren't constantly pointing out the extreme importance of ray tracing? After a certain point the diminishing returns makes it all redundant. Just turn down the graphics settings a bit for your gameplay and all of that drama immediately disappears. Screw AMD and Nvidia!

I like how this video showcases how much performance tanks with DLSS off. A lot of benchmarkers benchmark the 30 series cards mainly with DLSS on, so it's nice to see the 30 series cards get reviewed for their raw performance for a change. As to which card I want to get, I've been wanting to get a 3060 12GB, 3060 Ti or higher, but the 3060 12GB is the lowest I'll go if I have to settle. I'm definitely not getting the 3060 8GB thanks to this video (and a few other videos) showing how sluggish the 8GB version is. Excellent review overall. I've had a GTX 1060 since 2018. Got it for under $200 at the time. I've had that card since and it was really showing it's age recently, especially with unoptimized games like Starfield. I decided to upgrade to a 3060 instead of a 4060 because more and more games are going above the 8GB VRAM cap, even at 1080p. Sometimes the performance difference is almost nominal or even worse for the 4060 depending on VRAM usage. Bought my 3060 3x Fan for under $300 over 5 years after my 1060 purchase and holy shit was it a fantastic upgrade. I only have an i5 9600K (OD'd to 5GHz) so getting a higher tier video card just didn't make sense. The 3060 even OCs better than any other card I've owned. I was able to get 190MHz extra on the core and 1000MHz on the memory! I'm getting triple the FPS in most games that I was on the same settings on the 1060. Went from playing Cyberpunk on low with FSR at 30ish FPS to playing on Medium at 60FPS. Starfield was the hardest game to run, days before I upgraded. Lowest settings, 50% res scale, I was getting 22-25FPS on my 1060. I'm currently playing on medium with 62% scaling at 60FPS most of the time, 40-50 in New Atlantis. Also being able to take advantage of DLSS 3 is a great benefit for certain games, although FSR holds up and is often produces a sharper image. If you own a 1060/1060ti and are thinking of upgrading, the 3060 is the best mid-range NVIDIA card you can buy. There's a strong argument to get something like the AMD 6650xt or 6700xt (would be my choice for the $30 extra) instead, as it's better for the same cost minus the VRAM. But if you want to stick with NVIDIA the 3060 is a better purchase than the 4060 IMO due to games finally taking advantage of more than 8GBs of VRAM. The same couldn't be said when the 3060 originally launched, the 12GB just wasn't needed. Great mid-range card to "future-proof" your PC for a couple extra years.

I decided to hold off as the performance of the 3060 just wasn't enough performance per dollar even at $210. I have a GTX1080 barely getting use in a shop PC that has a 5600G. Opted to just use that GTX1080 for now and wait for a 6800/3080 or better deal to pop up in the next year. It took a while to get anyone to bite on one of my 6600XT's listed at $200. Now the 1080 is in the PC and running old games great. I plan on just moving it back to the shop PC whenever I buy a new used card for one of my systems. Too bad the 3060 just doesn't have the horsepower worth buying now for these secondary rigs. Likely will just upgrade a more primary rig that will push it's card down filling the hole just created. Wanted to sell a 6600XT before they dropped much lower on the used market.

Yeah, the 6650 xt I ordered I just sent back and picked up a 3060 12gb There is some kind of low power bug with the 6000 series cards. I learned this while trying to troubleshoot mine. It refused to run at anything more than half its clock. It wouldn't even honor manual clock or power settings. In fact the only thing that seemed to work properly were the fans. I even took the damn thing to a friend to use in his overpriced rig. He currently runs a 4090 and has a beefy power supply. Same thing, slow stutter mess. Take my advice and stay away from the 6650 XT.
