I have this lens for years and really like it. My auto focus stopped working all together at one point but I was able to fix it myself. There are tutorials on youtube, but you'd have to disassemble the lens completely including the electronic with it's flex cables. If you want to prevent the focusing problem all together, leave the lens hood on at all times, even when stored. The problem with the lens is that it has an aluminum frame inside that deforms when you bump the moving front element into something. This front element can be protected by leaving the hood on.

Fantastic info, thanks Stefan! I personally keep the hood on mine at all times, even when stored in my bag.

Thanks a lot for this important info. I had the problem, had it serviced a couple of times before I gave it up. I never had a lens hood on it, and it might have been the aluminum frame that you mentioned deformed.

Always storing the lens with the focus set to infinity, and thus the focus mechanism fully retracted into the lens' main barrel, also protects the weak focus collar from bumps.

Just bought this. The vignette was the first thing I noticed. It is very dark at the edges. More so than any lens I've ever owned, but I'm fine with it since I always add a vignette anyway, and a natural vignette looks better than a digital one since it exposes correctly and you get a good dynamic range in the shadows.
@christianskyes

I personally also like a natural vignette, especially for portraits, but if you want to remove it, or make it les obvious, applying lens correction should help 🤔

Amazing review. Real nice mood. Just got a f1.4 and tested on my Canon 6D and EOS R. On the 6D the focus is hit or miss at 1.4. I would shoot 3 frames a least to be sure one or two are good. On the EOS R, it nails focus every single time. It is amazing at 1.4. The only downside is the low contrast at 1.4 (at 2.0 it is great). I'm really satisfied with it!

Hi Cristian...great video review, helpful...and great voice to presented...I ordered one mostly to travel lightly , the 1.4 f stop and i found now he can be soft at the opening... but my question is : is worth it when I own an 24-70 mm f/2.8 L USM lens? Thanks
@christianskyes
2 жыл бұрын
Depends. If you want to do portraits, I'd much sooner use the 50mm f/1.4, as it will give you more Bokeh. For most other applications, I'd just use the 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM.
@sunlbx

it is absolutely worth it. i own both. especially when shutter speed matters. IF it is well calibrated on your camera, it's superb at f1.6. All lenses come a bit tilted, and if one corner is blurrier than the other, it's easily fixable by shimming at the mount. No lenses come perfect. I had to shim all my lenses, all of them, to go from okayish to perfection. The internet is full of bad reviews of 50mm f1.4 by Canon but I love mine.

Hi Christian ! Thanks for your videos. Could you help me with this one : Canon ef 50 mm f/1.4 usm vs canon ef 85 mm f/1.8 usm (in my range of budget)? Which one do you recommend for pictures of people dancing or any occasion indoor in a low light conditions?
@christianskyes
3 жыл бұрын
The 50mm f/1.4 opens wider, so more light can get in, more background blur, but it'll be harder to land sharp focus at that f-stop, especially if they're moving. The 85mm f/1.8 allows in less light at f/1.8, but it's more zoomed in, as it's an 85mm. I'd personally got for the 50mm f/1.4 if you can get close, and the people will be mostly stationary (standing or sitting down), and maybe the 85mm at f/1.8 if they're moving around, and you need to keep more of a distance. Hope this helps :)

@christianskyes

Absolutely 👍 You might struggle a bit if you're doing flat lay photos though, as the lens is quite zoomed in, as it's 50mm. If your camera also has a cropped sensor, then it'll be even more zoomed in. A kit lens would actually work better for that scenario, just released a review on the Canon kit lens if you want to see it. Otherwise, the 50mm f/1.4 is great for food photography.

Since the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM was introduced in 2015, there's no real reason to buy an EF 50mm f/1.4 any more. The image quality of the 50/1.4 wide open is not that great, and I don't use mine opened wider than f/2. The newer 50mm f/1.8 STM is just as sharp as the 50mm f/1.4 at all common apertures. Also, unlike the previous EF 50mm f/1.8 II, the STM has a metal mount ring and a real manual focus ring. I still use my EF 50mm f/1.4, but if it broke I'd buy an EF 50mm f/1.8 STM to replace it.

The corners of this lens look more like 70's lenses, with dark corners, at this point it's worst than some very old lenses such as the Zuiko 50 1.4 or the AutoRevuenon (Tomioka) 50 1.4 but I love how it renders colors. It's a great lens, with an "antique" optical design, derivate from the FD mount but it's one rare modern lens fully digital compatible without adapter providing this old fashioned film look. Other 50 such as the Canon 50 1.2 or the Sigma 50 1.4 are too sharp, too clean and not so "romantic" than this one. This lens is very sharp accros the frame from f1:2.8-4 but sharpness is not the most important in photography, blurry-dark picture can be amazingly good when surgically sharp images can be boring, it's a question of talent and not of gear.

You have two choices for the Canon 50mm; f/1.4 and f/1.8 there's about a $275 difference between the two on B&H. I have the EF 50mm f/1.4 that was one of the first lens I bought. A little history; for nearly 40 years the 50mm in various max aperture was the standard non-removable lens on Canon cameras. There have been millions of prenominal photographs take with Canon cameras during that time. Even when the first interchangeable lens Canon hit the market the 50mm was the lens of choice until we felt that we needed something else. If I had to rid myself of all my lenses I'd keep the EF 50mm f/1.4, RF 50mm f/1.8 and the RF 35mm f/1.8, EF 35mm f/2. I have two film, one DSLR and one mirrorless cameras, all full frame Canon cameras.

"Bear in mind that a 50mm is only 50mm on a full-frame camera. If you have a cropped sensor, the focal length changes." No, the angle of view changes. The lens' focal length is still 50mm, as that is a property of the lens, no matter what size sensor or film is behind it.

@michaelclark9762

@@cameronamador5472 That's a rather deceptive way of describing that what really happens when the smaller sensor only records a narrower angle of view than what is projected by the lens' image circle. It's why so many folks are so confused about it. The focal length of a 50 mm lens is always 50mm, regardless of what size sensor is behind it. Even if there is no sensor behind it, it's still a 50 mm lens that refracts light by a specific amount.
