The uses of a knife are endless. The most useful tool man has ever concieved. Bear mace is also a good thing to carry not necessarily just for bears

It's no coincidence that the more years someone hikes, the smaller and smaller the knife they carry, until many just stop.

I carry a small knife. I've came to my limit of no more than 3oz, so there's still a variety to chose from.

After years of carrying a small sheath knife I've gone now to a small Swiss Army knife. Never used the larger knife for anything other than cutting cheese, and medical tape. Oh ya, I did drop it one day and it stuck in my leg. Keep Smilin'

Is there an outdoorsman over the age of, say, 14 who chooses to NOT carry a cutting edge? If there is, I have never met him? Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

I carry a CRKT minimalist neck knife. Can be worn under shirt in town or even strapped to shoulder strap on trail.

Yes, I do like the fact that mine is concealed now. I think it could freak people out. I always took it off my strap in town or hitchhiking and put it in my pocket. Again, I consider it a kitchen utensil rather than a weapon. Keep Smil'in

Why ? A 9 isn't going to stop anything big enough to be a threat, unless it's a person. Bear, moose, musk ox, elk etc. all you would do is piss them off.

@@safromnc8616 not true. A well placed 9mm bullet can take down a bear (although, you're more likely to take down a black bear than a grizzly/brown bear). If you practice enough, you can get good enough to headshot a bear at 25-50 yards. Also, when I'm hiking, I fear humans much more than any bear or moose. I pray I'll never have to use a weapon on anyone or anything. But, I'd rather have to fire a shot at 5-10 yards than have to stab someone. Stabbing just seems too personal and aggressive (I'm not accusing anyone of actually being more aggressive, it just appears like that to me). Plus, I feel way more confident that I can take down something or someone with a 9mm than any knife. With a knife, you have to let the perpetrator get way too close before you can actually defend yourself. With a gun, you can stay far enough away from any aggressor. I'm not saying having a gun in the woods makes you invincible, just saying it's way better than just a knife. Why not carry both?
