I like more of a middle ground-one earbud in with low volume music. As I run and get more into a zone, I start to tune out the music and its basically like it isn't there. I helps me not get bored at the beginnings of runs as well as staying in them when they get difficult. From a safety standpoint I can still hear my surroundings clearly and there's the faintness of my own footsteps and breathing, too! :)

Totally 1000% agree! Safety is the reason why I stopped listening to music but all the other benefits you mention became very obvious. Now, I don't even think about listening to anything other than my breathing, my shoes and my surroundings.

He says once he gets home he immediately writes down everything he can remember I’m going to try implement this but I’ve noticed without the music high running is so much harder😭

I love running both ways, I used to need music or a podcast to run the same as you but I started to run without it and I love the way it feels, hearing the wind and enjoying the breathtaking views of a trail run. At night time though, some ambient music such as “Snowfall” by Oneheart is still amazing to pair with a setting Sun during a quick 15-20 miler

I did this. Whenever I went for a run I had a separate playlist for running, one day my Airpods were out of battery halfway through my run and I just ran without any music. I was surprised how alert and concentrated I was on my workout. I definitely recommend this.

I get moments of rush while running and listening to music, I reach some level of climax that I couldn’t describe but it’s a great feeling. I understand the no music benefits but to me only during race or PB days. All the best 🤙🏼

I only use music on shorter distance runs to test my speed. Longer without. Some tracks really motivate me to push hard. You know the ones that make your hairs stand up

I do both and running without headphones and just listening to the sound of your feet is music to my ears. Especially when you hit your sweet pace. Your mind will enjoy it too because it relieves you with stress. It's almost you are in sync with the earth's rotation and revolution 😂 you feel like you belong anywhere at once

I like both lol. On days I'm feeling motivated, I enjoy listening to music to plan out my Star Wars fanfics (you, shut up, I love the battles, the cool tech, and perilous but fictional scenarios 😂). I enjoy going without music now that I've dealt with a lot of personal issues and did the inner work lol.

Love this! I always run without music. I went through a period of time maybe five or six years ago where I experimented with a couple of runs with music and for some of the reasons that you mentioned I just decided not to continue listening to music it’s been at least four or five years of running at this point with no music and I completely agree with everything that you said.

I do the middle. I did a classical style playlist one morning with ambient mode on really quite. It fills the emptyness, but leaves room to still get that mind wonder going. Was really nice.

I apply this same technique to cycling. I used to love having my headphones in and creating my own personal soundtrack while riding my bike but as someone that also really enjoys being in nature, i feel like i’m taking myself out of it when i can’t hear my surrounding. As a musician, i’ve gotten some of my best song ideas when i’m out cycling. With all the benefits i can’t ever see going back

Actually I have my mind wandering and think about things while I run with music as well.. but you are right about the being alert thing. I have a lot of cars as well where I run.. but as I use to run at 6am, they are so little that I am able to run with music. (But I put it low volume)

Now a day for safety reasons you can choose to have surround noise in your headsets. You can choose different music genre that is conducive to your mood and your environment. A nice run around a natural lake on a natural reserve in Sweden during the early spring days can be wonderful to hear the bird chipping but running across the Brooklyn bridge in New York City I definitely want music or something that is in sync with my thoughts or mood. It is an individual choice!

it sure helps with consistency 💖no prep needed, no charging phones and headphones, no additional belt to rub against your body and concentrate sweat in one place, no distracting yourself with clicking through playlist or looking around relying on vision to be safe..i still update my playlist but i've been running without music for months and i def intend to continue this practice maybe running with music for esp long runs in the summer💖😁

I think different types of music puts you in different headspaces, metal when I'm pushing hard to do heavy sets, atmospheric dnb to run and zone out, or calm meditation music. I've found that when I want to focus and be productive I need music with no vocals, and to fall asleep, music or podcasts with talking/vocals help my mind settle by taking my focus off thoughts and rumination so I can relax.

On my long runs i definitely have to listen to something because i am not running for 3 hours with just the sound of shoes in ground but for my tempo runs I don’t use headphones it just distracts me and I have to focus on my pace

Exactly same here. When I started running about 12 years ago, I always ran with my ipod. And then there were times the battery ran out and I hated that session. But then, when I got back into running last year, I ditched the old ipad and it's been a much better experience without it. As you say - you're in the moment more, you can focus on your biomechanics and from a safety perspective, it's great.

Agreed...it's definitely a meditative state of mind at times & at other times during runs I let my mind wonder, let's me clear my head. Plus it's safer, I can hear cars coming & other such noises around me.

I absolutely get not wearing headphones running OUTSIDE, but goddamn if treadmills aren’t annoying as hell without NC headphones/earbuds. I get so distracted by the belt and my stride that I can’t keep up faster paces. When I got my AirPods for training though, not hearing the machine try to tear itself apart was one of the best changes to my training ever. However, it IS very easy to become dependent on

I’ve tried running with earbuds and I can’t keep the pace like I can when I can hear myself breathe. Idk why. Also it messes my cadence up if the tempo of the song is different than my feet

try running with marine cadence. first time i tried it i ran a whole extra mile. You can follow their footsteps and cadence, the songs help with motivation and embrace the pain

I can run with both. For races I never use music. Also some speed sessions I don’t use them. But I hate doing long runs without them. I just put my music really low and relax into it.

I do workout and run with music and motivation. Buh that ended when I heard David gogin say " you train with songs and motivational speech for a course you can't use headphones for. Since then I sharpened my mind grinding through the moment earphone free.

I have never used headphones to listen to music or something else but most of the people on the ground track always listen to music even my friends and so I wanted to try it. I asked my friend to give me his headphones 🎧. That was my first and last experience. So terrible feelings while running.

Music is the reason l run. l used to drive my car and listen to music (and sometimes l still do), but running is cooler and cheaper lol so l mist have the music.
