I've just started my KZitem journey 2 weeks ago, I've only really got 4 hours on a Sunday night to record and finalise. It's nuts some of the work people put in their videos, I can't even imagine the extra time to slap in some meme references. It'll be fun to see how I can improve and build on only a 4/5 hour time limit. I don't really want KZitem stealing any of my main learning/development time, so I doubt my KZitem will gain too much success but hey, it's all about having fun!

Great video! Thanks for sharing your experience. Many don't realize how challenging it is to edit videos and make devlogs until they try it themselves. Your insights are super valuable-keep it up!

Unless you have a giant marketing budget starting a new youtube channel can be the best way to get a following and expose your game to an audience. Like you said before, its 5% programming, 5% luck and 90% marketing. Keep up the good videos.

When it comes to getting feedback that you usually cannot put into action, I find it useful to have them as a point of discussion in the end of my videos, highlighting the people who said these things, whether I want to carry through with implementing it or not. That way people feel engaged in a project that they can't otherwise contribute to or play-test just yet. And although visuals are a priority, as long as the content is thought provoking or otherwise entertaining, people can be drawn in regardless.

It's certainly difficult to have a youtube channel, a full time job, and try to make and market a game on other social media sites. Almost overwhelming! I've had to to come to the understanding that if I focus on the views/subscribers/likes this early in my channels life, it's only going to destroy my confidence. Instead, I look at it as a practice run for this first game, getting to know what works and doesn't work on YT, and to slowly build a core audience. Thanks for the video! Very enlightening

I feel like KZitem is a great way to approach marketing, which is a big part of being an indie dev. Even if you don't like marketing, if your dream is to make a living out of making games it's necessary. Starting a youtube channel can be a way to learn marketing without instant consequences

Very good video. I'm managing KZitem and Game Development in this way: I start working on the mechanisms for my game(s). And I turn anything interesting into a tutorial. Yes, it does take more time, but actually when you turn an implementation into an educational video, it goes into your bones and you understand your own mechanism in a much deeper level. It also prevents to from doing "lazy" implementations, because anything on the screen must be polished and good. So it's a win-win game for me. I think the time I spend on my KZitem channel is worth it. By the way, I changed my editing style about 3 weeks ago, and since then I got 200+ subscribers which is skyrocket for such a young channel...

My goal is to build up a KZitem audience through a gamedev vlog (devlog) -- Not even focused on selling it, will be focused on providing behind the scenes, about the process of making a game from start-to-finish - I guess my only question is how can I do a devlog without having some decent visuals first. I get it, make your game first, when you have visuals then do videos -- Got several things at play here 1) showing from start to finish (except the story I had come up with years before but even going to share the story), 2) people commenting on just start and worry about getting views and improving later, 3) I kind of need to start now, because just waiting means that I won't getting anything financially out of this until later (creatively is fine, but I want to support myself with this stuff to, and if I don't have anything out, it will still take a long time from when I do start posting, so if it takes me a year to get a decent number of views/subscribers, then it takes me a year from that initial video, which means if I'm posting 3 months later, then it's a year and 3 months to get views from it. A lot of variables here. Also deciding whether to unlist my previous attempt at a devlog.

Well started a YT channel, but I will say consistency is the hardest thing to nail down especially with life. I do think it's important for visibility. I've watched some GDC talks on marketing and it has been shown that it's not entirely necessary because you can use other forms of social media for the exposure. But since I don't use those and have already been making videos on a separate channel it seemed like a natural thing to do for me to start a game dev channel. Hopefully, I'll breath some life into it soon and maintain some level of consistency with the uploads. On a different note: Holy shit, dude! Congrats on the 12k subs! I've been subscribed to you since...I think before you even had a 1k. Definitely before you had 1.5. And wow, great growth and you guys have definitely nailed it. I'm glad both you and your wife's hard work has been paying off!

I too recently got serious about youtube for my UE5 Tribal management pvp game and your comments about split audience I think hold a lot of weight Since I do want to do both tutorials and development style content, I decided to split it into two youtube channels, and we'll see how that goes. It'll certainly slow down growth short term but as you said, it's a long game and I suspect it'll play better with the youtube algorithm in the long run

A great roundup. Know what it is that you want from your channel and build that. I want excellent feedback, so I didn't go all the way with visuals - I just took a half step. As long as I have enough views to generate interesting comments for feedback, that's enough. 4 years in, 65 devlogs later and I do garner some wishlists but it's still about the feedback. There is another distinction I see a lot that you didn't mention that simply groups youtubers by their focus. Gamedevs who KZitem and KZitemrs who Gamedev. With the first crowd the game (ultimately wishlists) come first; with the second the focus is on subs and revenue through partnerships. Some manage both but they are rare.

I make a DevLog video every month and it’s basically how I’m developing the game, so you get to see programmer art and then it becomes less bad art. However I believe you’re right that I don’t get enough traction because it’s not super polished visuals that entice someone.

I think that if no one knows that you exist. And you make your first quick game without a publisher. Then you need marketing or be super lucky like flappy bird for example. But if you rely on luck too much. You might as well try the lottery instead. These small quick games have a much higher chance to flop. Give more love to your game and see better results. Or go with quantity. Make tons of small games and hope one of them get's popular. But all of them has to be unique and not anything generic like a standard platformer. Game design is hard and coming up with so many fresh ideas isn't that easy.

Great video. I started my channel in hopes I could get feedback on the game I work on and also just help those new to game dev. I've learned a lot since I started this summer and so have a bit of a unique perspective in some aspects. But like you mentioned, there are many opportunities that YT can lead to. I do have a concern about the amount of time it takes, working on figuring out that balance and have set a pretty ambitious goal to have a demo of my game ready for the next steam next fest.

9:58 Technically I do have a KZitem channel, but I've been afraid to make my first video for a year :) Writing a script just takes a lot of time, given that my English is not very good. I wanted to make tutorials, but it took me about 3 weeks to write the script 80%. And I’m not even sure that what I wrote will be interesting for anyone to watch. It's looks like it’s better for developers to make small videos that can be interesting not only for game developers and advertising in them a game you’re making. 🍌

Likely I didn't have enough coffee this morning, but it really didn't seem to answer the question for the video title. It seemed to more answer the general "Should You Start a KZitem Channel while being a Game Dev?". So far as I could tell the answer was no for the game specifically, as it'd take time away from the game development or steer the game development away from being productive towards getting the game done. But maybe a yes depending on the type of channel and what money you get from making the channel so as to be able to have money to continue developing your game. Sort of related to the question but not directly. I'm more interested in whether even having a KZitem channel will help with the Marketing or Sales aspect of your game. It didn't really seem to answer that very well or perhaps I just misunderstood what you were saying. Sorry.

I made the same mistake of visuals and money wasting at the start of a now canceled project, and you give a great input on how people would direct your development if you don't protect your ideas. I love how you have learned so much and are teaching us all based on your insights. Personally I don't think I'll ever do YT along with a game dev aside from devblogs, it takes too much time for the return. Anyways thank you for your videos!

good vid, man. I currently have a channel covering the game Marvel Snap, but as I dive into game dev, I'm considering starting a new channel. I've been in the KZitem game for years and had a previous channel that brought in full-time income at the height of it. Now, it's $200-$1,000 a month for the current one, and I also have a full-time job and some other side hustles. The main reason I'd start a game dev channel is because I'm BRAND new and kind of want to document the journey (and I don't really have many people to talk to about it in my normal life lol). Fortunately, I've been editing videos for years, so I they don't take me too long. I don't really think the goal with a new channel would be to make money, but right now, I'm just trying to decide if I have the time to post semi-consistently.

As I started in August this year to go full-time with GameDev, I had the vision to do live development on twitch, making (dev)vlogs about my journey and just making the game in a few months.... I planned all and thought yay this could be realistic. Ahhh and don't forget to keep your "social media marketing" alive.... yeah... now it's October, initially I wanted to release the full game at least this month... Now I going into Early Access on the 31st... I streamed just a few times, the life just interrupted me consistently in my work block (life as a father of 2 kids could be interesting...). Then the KZitem part, I still do it, but in a very minimum amount. I take a GoPro with me and talk my thoughts into it and what happens and so I release every week a Vlog now, that's workflow is going very well now. But in just with all the stuff come together.... I don't come really to promote my game, I didn't manage to get good progress into it and changed right before the Steam Next Fest a lot.... And yeah the money sinks, the income is not on the horizon and we will see what happens in November 🙂 The purchases of the game I think will not take us far away (currently 300 wishlists) 😀 So, if you start doing GameDev you should decide what you really want to do and from what do you want to pay your bills and focus on that until this happens.
