There is just a better feeling of opening a can of dumped ammo.

In the boxes looks prettier and is easier to keep track of your ammo count. However, in a mass storage or bug out situation loose is the best option as you can store far more ammo. The key is to have loose cans for storage and bug out and a case with boxes for everyday use and range days

I keep em in the box. I understand the dump method when you have thousands of rounds but I’m a regular guy with 4 boxes of ammo, utilize the rest of the can space.

I keep my ammo in a box that way I still have the lot number and info if something happens

Well I done research on this for a year. I come to the conclusion that a huge proportion of the military ammo is loose in the ammo can and performs just fine. They been doing it for years for the common rounds like 5.56 and 9mm so it should work for me as well. With that said I toss mine in the metal cans loose.

Then your rifle explodes and you don’t know which ammo or the lot # to blame.

@@leveledup1nce point blank and simple Idgaf about what you think or done or had happen or will happen. If that was the case then why does the military do it???? Only uninformed between us is you thinking I give a damn.

Cardboard has a potential absorbing moisture, in a zip lock bag might be a better idea.

I served in the infantry just after the Vietnam War 75-78. All of the 5.56 ammo came out of the cans in bandoleers that had the ammo in clips for fast loading into the magazines. The 7.62 ammo belts came in cardboard boxes with a cloth bag that could be slung on your shoulder or attached to the M-60 feed tray. We were never allowed to remove the belts from the shipping boxes or carry them across your chest rambo-style as that could cause a malfunction if they got dirty or misaligned.

Not that it would happen, but over time & if moisture leaked into the can, the cardboard boxes could cause the ammo to rust b/c cardboard retains moisture... keep it loosie goosie, just in case.

Loose fits more - it’s nice to have an index card to keep a running tally and I line the inside of the box with cardboard - that whole dissimilar metals thing. Match ammo always stays in OEM box.

I want the practicality of having it loose but every time I think about dumping out my ammo, I get the thought in the back of my mind that if shit hit the fan, it would be so much harder to hand out ammo to my family or grab and go when needing to hunt or scout
