I've been toying with the idea of playing the midi drum tracks and putting overhead mics on the speakers, as the lack of overheads is a major difference between a midi drum set sound and a micced acoustic drum set sound. Have you tried this, and what are your thoughts on the idea?

Buying equipment that you would want to keep forever is such an underratedly good piece of advice. Another good piece of advice is to upgrade the bottlenecks when they become such a constraint that it is too limiting. That the constraint is negatively impacting your ability to make music. This changes depending on your specific circumstance so it is hard to give general comments on it but a good place to start, like Warren said, is with acoustic treatment and headphones. Some other common bottlenecks in my experience are in the headphone amp (which can make a bigger difference then upgrading headphones), the number of inputs that can be recorded (which is very different from the quality of inputs as many interfaces are “good enough” but if you are trying to record something like an entire band live and you only have 2 inputs, it is substantially more likely that you will not get the sound you want), and time. What I mean by time is the more that you have things already set up and ready to go the more efficient you can be. Another way of saying that is to be prepared. This better enables you to focus on the things that matter most. One way to help with time constraints is a patchbay. A patchbay can help keep things efficient as it allows for a lot of the otherwise ad hoc “setup work” to be permanent

Hi there, I would like to add some tips to the ones that Warren has provided in this video. 1. About the mandolin, one trick that I've used is to tune it like an open G: GGDDGBDD it sounds great with chords and you can easily play it. 2. About the upgrades, I always suggest buying something that improves your workflow before anything else. That sexy piece of gear can be a pain ITB if it does not suit your workflow. So, cables, surge protectors, USB docks, cable management, backup disks, and stuff like this. 3. I have CTS and I've found a great benefit using a vertical mouse. Also, a 5 min exercise every day (even if do not play guitar) and always 5 min warm-up before playing. If you have injuries or feel pain always speak to a doctor. I hope this is helpful Have a wonderful day Julian

I'm lucky to come from a place with a pretty rich Folk music tradition and I've had the pleasure of being friends with many great musicians who work in that vein so the mandolin is a sound I know really well, along with things like banjo, bazouki and balalaika and whilst there was always Trad Folk groups around there were also one or two groups who I guess you could call Folk-Punk/Rock. Those guys seemed to effortlessly blend the traditional instruments, even fiddle, with some heavy guitar and bass work. Using the likes of mandolin and banjo etc, tuned to, and within a more modern score always sounds magnificent and brings a real heart to proceedings, and from a production standpoint allows you to take your melodies into frequencies that really cut through in a mix.

Great video Warren. The upgrading the studio part for me has been an investment over time as I'm sure it has been for many people. I really just started with mine about a year and change ago and into DAW recording my own music. The learning curve has been interesting, from letting others do all the mix and mastering, to learning to do it myself with the ins and out of the process and gear choices. Buying gear for the long term use is something I wish I did with certain beginning choices, that are now kind of useless. Like cheaper monitors and headphones for example. But something I am focused on now.

Hey Warren , I ask you the same question like the others in the community. After passing my examen ( after 3 1/2 years) I have now a budget of 6-8k ( sorry for my german english , I hope you understand what I try to explain to you ) . I have a 2 ins and out interface 205´s eve. A great LDCM and 2 SDCM , quite good room accoustics ( because I measured and treated it ) . What should I update ? I would be trilled to buy a bigger interface to connect external analog stuff like a masterbus comp . I use S1 pro and I got all the plugins I need there + a few more I like from 3 party members. I have very good headphones ( Neumanns ) . What do you suggest Warren. I really appreciate your help for the community with your videos ! Im glad that I have you as a mentor on my way to a better producer/mixer/songwriter. So long, Christian Schröer ( not Schröder ) :)

When you get your pawn shop mandolin, be careful to loosen or tighten the strings dramatically to alternate tunings before you've got some moisture into the thing. I got a job with a local luthier when I was a teenager, and our most common repair was pawn shop style mandolin repairs that got too dry then it was either released of tension or over tensioned. Take a hot shower and let the mandolin sit in the room with you if it's too dry.
@Dave-Rough-Diamond-Dunn
2 жыл бұрын
@@legacyShredder1 Thanks heaps for that, I live in an arid climate now, for the last 3 years, and I think the lack of humidity is why both a semi acoustic and a fully acoustic have developed buzzes that I can't find the cause of. If that's a common problem with mandolins, then no doubt your advice is going to be crucial to me, thanks heaps, I really appreciate it. I do come across mandolins in a pawn shop chain's stores quite a lot, so I don't think it will be long before I pick one up, and I have the perfect song for using one on too! 🙂
@legacyShredder1
2 жыл бұрын
@@Dave-Rough-Diamond-Dunn If it's hot and dry and you've got a buzz in an acoustic it's 100% one of the internal braces/struts on the inside of the top. 1st get some moisture into the thing the same way I mentioned before. May take a couple showers. Then loosen the strings, and just using your hand tap on the braces until you find the loose ones. You can use a thin putty knife with wood glue to get wood into the cracks. Turn the guitar over, and find something small enough to fit in the hole that has a little weight to it to hold the brace down enough while the glue dries. Let it sit over night, then retune your guitars.

What would you say about the idea of there being a "formula" for hit songs? I personally don't like that kind of thinking because I believe it is far more detailed at least when we're talking about music that can be remembered for decades. Your channel is very entertaining, keep up the great work.
@arnodesogus3540
2 жыл бұрын
I think it is more about being open to inspiration and getting a feeling for what works and what not, rather than using a formula. I don't think there is one. This can be practiced by writing a lot and as you said by being open minded towards all kinds of music. I think that's a better way to get a feeling for what can move people than trying to find a shortcut. Although there are certain patterns that reappear that does not make them a formula for certain results.

I'm not the expert that should really be saying but I do get asked about things like microphone choice, particularly for beginners. Trying to buy things that can carry on beyond beginner use is a big deal to me. It's about sound investment (no pun intended). That's why I recommend the AT2020 (or for a little more money the AT2035). It is $99 often (or $135 for the AT2035). It is a mic that can be useful in a mic locker full of expensive mics. I've seen shoot outs where for a particular singer it was the choice mic over $1000+ mics. Second, a SM57 is such a great choice at $99 as Warren says, especially when it can become a whole new mic when you add an in-line booster. Then the next level up but still at home studio prices are the Roswell mini-K mics. An uncommon but great choice is the Aspen Pittman Designs DT-1. It's a medium diaphragm hyper-cardioid condenser great for mic'ing acoustic guitar or vocals. ($120 to $110).
