Have used RCA all my life with my stereo setups. Have used XLR for sound with bands. Just recently bought an amp that has XLR for front LR of theater / 2 channel listening. The XLR are lower in volume, but seem to have better detail than the RCA. If I had to do all over again, I would've bought a multi channel amp that had all XLR's.

For some prepros, XLR can give you higher voltage output than RCA, so XLR would be preferable there (assuming your amp can take advantage of that extra voltage)

If the distance of the connection between your preamplifier and amplifier less than 10 feet then use good quality RCA for maximum signal. If the distance is greater than 10 feet use XLR

Usually XLR hardware accept or can produce higher level (meaning more peak voltage) this also can enable using amplifiers with a lower volume (but same output power result) depending on situations this can be desirable. The + and - signals cancellation can also help reduce noise with faint signals like mics or phono. With everything good, RCA can also be good, but XLR seem to insure good signal more often / easier. (same thing with TRS vs TS connections) My gut feeling is that with stronger signals (without going into the red) the sound seems clearer, or have more authority. But this changes nothing to imaging or detail, this is just more puch, more dynamic. But all that is subjective, since i can't technically justify that, and it can be situational with recordings and specific devices used.

The speakers also have XLR in and out(each one of them). Will I solve the issue with an XLR cable from speaker 1 to speaker2?

The point is their is no difference just to your pocket book don’t be an audio fool this is why they should make all consumer electronics balanced XLR then you would be spending 10-15 quid for excellent sound and you could do a long run without quality signal loss.

Do use for my TEAC DSD DAC unbalanced XLR to RCA because my AVR DENON has no XLR input. So I was concerned if my DSD files will pass through and they do. ON my universal NAD player to output 2ch SACD it has to be balanced XLR both ways. I normally use the RCA analog multichannel out for that to run multi or 2ch stereo in SACD to my AVR. by using a RCA TO XLR adaptor would that make it balanced ? I do have one amp of mine that has XLR input.

The noise canceling benefits comes from the differential circuitry in the electronics not the cables. Most home theater gear does not use differential circuits, but offer XLR connections simply for flexibility. Both ends of the connection must employ the differential circuitry to gain the greater signal to noise ratio, otherwise you still gain the 6db greater signal, but also 6db of increased noise.

My preferred cable is HDMI cause it takes away all the clutter especially on devices such as a Blu Ray player as an example and the only real reason you would need any other outposts would be for old formats like DVD Audio. XLR is widely used with PA Systems and Microphones for live bands and I think if you are using Power Amplifiers that is where they are mostly used to cut down the noise interference. I personally do not see the point of them being used for AV Receivers and Hifi amplification. Stage amplification generates way more power than anything you are going to buy in the AV or HiFi world which is the reason why XLR cables are needed for live performances and stage gear. I do not see an awful lot of benefit you will get by using them on AV and HiFi equipment.
@krane15

XLR are the professional cable variant. They span distance much longer than anything the average home user would need. Because they're professional quality means they're a whole lot tougher (and more expensive) then typical consumer use cables. Caution: just because its XLR on the end doesn't guarantee professional quality in between. Just like anything else,m here are cheap ones too. Just like anything else. If its for professional use, buy the professional brand. As for the HDMI, that too is consumer grade. The more pro grade for similar purposes would would be Display port.
@LeeLucas
4 жыл бұрын
@@krane15 I like the Display Port though once again you are not going to get less clutter as you would with HDMI because it does not support HD Audio or any Audio as far as I know. There are quality cables and cables that are just so ridiculously well overpriced but in general £10 - £20 will get you a decent cable and it certainly does not cost the earth to get a decent sound like most of these Audiphilles would suggest. XLR cables on HiFi components are nothing more than a ploy to try and get you to buy more rubbish you don't really need at all. They has to have something new to entice people to buy it 😁😁😁
@krane15
4 жыл бұрын
@@LeeLucas Anything HDMI can do DP can do better. In fact, DP has always had a higher data rate than HDMI, generation for generation. Its just that HDMI is many times more popular with consumers. As for XLR, some people really do need it. After all, if I could afford a dedicated theater with long runs through and around walls XLR would most certainly be my cabling of choice.
