Hi Guys :-D In this video I talk about Should you Water a Cactus after Repotting ?
@zcoanmcoan1534
2 жыл бұрын
Yes! You should never water after repotting! Maybe wait about a week or two! But there's always something many people forget! Never use dry soil when repotting, dry soil is not good for root growth. Keep your soil a little moist to get better root growth! Many people told me this, after ive done that my plants had really good root growth. Make sure your soil isnt too moist.

A very clear and concise piece of advice to growers of varying knowledge and experience across the board. More plants are lost in Spring than at any other time of year due to the still-low temperatures. Water won't evaporate as fast and plants will not need to take up as much as summer because they are not growing yet and only need to restore internal balance. The first or second waters are rehydration and a signal for the plant to end dormancy. I allow for a 2 or 3 week gap between the first and second water and would repot plants at 7 or 10 days post first water and then another 7-14 days afterwards. Some cacti have a wider tolerance for extended "moistness than others", but its safe to never push the boat out. Dry potting regimes should be strictly adhered to with virtually all "hard desert" Andean Montane, Southwest US and Mexican varieties, due to low requirements of water annually. In many cases, one mistake with many of these and you'll likely lose the plant.

Thanks so much James :-D and so very true, more plants are lost in Spring than in Winter, and it can be such a dodgy time of year for our plants as they slowly wake up from their Winter rest, they have forecast some nice sunny weather from tomorrow onwards, but I will still be holding back on watering the desert Cacti until next month as this time of year can be so up and down with the temperatures and weather, thanks so much James for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Somerset for a terrific Tuesday afternoon XXXX

Great video 😊 Ive just become the proud owner of around five giant cactuses and I am a complete and novice. Furthermore, I'm not great at looking after cactus plants over the years, so this will be a definite challenge. Here in the UK where The weather fluctuates so much. It's hard to know the exact care for each variety. I was told that you can even take them outside in the summer months. Definitely more research is needed.

Hi Liz, I'm a fairly new subscriber and have been a cactus and succulent enthusiast for a number of years. You'd think after all that time, I would have picked up not watering a newly potted succuent along the way. Yesterday I recieved a small (approx.5") tall Madagascar palm I ordered online. Upon recieving it, I took it out of the grower's black plastic pot and put it in a slightly larger "vented" orange terra cotta pot with some cactus/succulent potting soil with a bit of added perlite for good measure. After dusting the root ball with rooting hormone, I firmed up the new soil around it and let it sit for 24 hours. Instinctively, I knew somehow not to water it right away. Just prior to watching your video, I soaked it with plain water I had let sit out from the time I potted it (24 hours) to let the impurities escape. I didn't water it heavily, but still. At least I didn't FERTILIZE it like I did the rest of my plants. With all the drainage I have, I'm trusting things will be OK. What do you think? 🪴🌵

Hi Dale :-D thats fantastic you have been a Cactus and Succulent enthusiast for a number of years, and thanks so much for subscribing :-D the good news is your Madagascar palm should still be ok especially at this time of year, I find that the Succulents including Madagascar Palms are much less likely to get root damage or rot if they are watered after repotting, and after 24 hours the roots would have have a chance to settle into its new soil, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday XXXX

Hi there, the good news is I find Euphorbias seem to be a lot more resistant than cacti when repotting and watering afterwards, your Euphorbia should be ok, Cacti seem to be a lot more sensitive to getting root rot if watered straight after repotting but Euphorbias are more resistant and especially at this time of year it should still be ok, happy growing your Euphorbia and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic weekend XXXX

I've acquired some cacti and succulents from a family member that, due to health reasons can no longer care for them properly. She said that many of them haven't been watered for quite a long while. I could tell right away that many of them are badly dehydrated. I want to repot them into my DIY soil mix. That way I can see what is going on with their roots. So, despite being dehydrated, should I still give them some time after repotting before watering? The soil they are currently in is pretty bad. A lot of them look to still be in their very old nursery soil. I really don't want to risk bringing them home without repotting them first. They are still currently on her back yard deck. But they need to be brought to my home pretty soon., as she is currently in the middle of selling her property. So, I planned to just go there and do the repotting there before bringing them home. That way, I'll know ahead of time if they have any pest issues. I just wanted to be sure that waiting to water them after repotting is the best course of action. I can't wait to get them. I wish it were on a much happier note, and not due to my cousin's failing health. Sorry I am always asking you a million questions all the time Lyn. I truly appreciate you being generous with your time and taking a moment to help me out with advice! 😊🌵✌️❤️

Hi Bennie :-D So sorry to hear about your Cousins health, and thats wonderful your Cousins plants will be loved and cared for by you, it can be a bit of a dilemma but its still best to wait before watering after repotting, and I think the best thing to do with the cacti is to repot them all into the new soil, and then keep them unwatered for about a week and keep them in a position away from any direct sunlight for a week, this will help to prevent them from getting any more dehydrated, after a week you can start to very lightly introduce water, its best to start off slowly to acclimatise them to being watered, and move them to a more sunnier spot, but with the Succulents it should be safe to water them straight after repotting them if you introduce water slowly once you have repotted them, good luck with your wonderful new Cacti and Succulents Bennie, and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday today XXXX

@desertplantsofavalon
Жыл бұрын
Hi Stan :-D the good news is if you have used unglazed terracotta pots then they will have much more of a chance of drying much faster than if they were in plastic or glazed pots, I think the best thing to do is to place a few sheets of some absorbent tissue roll under the pots, the absorbent tissue paper will help to soak up the water, the other thing you could do is to remove them from the pots and let the soil and roots air out and dry before replanting into dry soil again, but as long as the soil is only damp and not wet then your plants should be ok, but if the soil is staying wet I would recommend removing them from their pots and turning them onto their sides onto a few sheets of paper tissue to let the roots and soil dry out and then repot into dry soil, good luck with your wonderful new cacti and thanks so much for watching, wishing you a fantastic plant powered new week XXXX

I respotted my lil catus last week exactly and was told to wait a week to ten days. After watching this im defo going to wait another 5 or 6 days as I used the special catus soil and a new clean pot, which a drainage hole as ive heard that is needed to. I got the catus in a local shop about 3 years ago and it was one little catus but now its grown bits on the sides of the catus , about 1 inch diameter and there are 3 of them now. Why is that? Is it due to the pot being to small or stress? Ahhhah shoot, saw this video too late. I repotted last night and watered after like I do for my other plants. This repot was a doozy too, had to break a lot of roots because it was previously owned by someone else and the soil had become hydrophobic and super compacted. The plant is clearly suffering from some severe dehydration, most of the plant has gone yellowed and wrinkled. What should I do from here? 😢
@desertplantsofavalon
Жыл бұрын
Hi there, because you had to break some of the roots I would remove the cactus from the pot and remove as much of the soil as possible, and then leave the cactus unpotted on its side in a position away from direct sunshine to allow the cut roots to heal over for a week, after about a week re pot into dry cactus soil and keep the cactus in a bright position but away from strong sunshine, if its Fall / Autumn where you live it can be a tough time to get cactus to hydrate again until the Spring, and if you water now there is a possibility the cactus could rot, but what I would recommend you do is to keep the cactus overwintered in a bright location but away from strong sunshine, and you can very lightly mist the cactus with water to stop it from dehydrating further, the other thing you can do is to try to encourage your cactus to not go dormant at this time of year and place it under a plant LED grow light for 12 -15 hours a day and place onto a plant heat mat to encourage the plant to re grow, this will make your cactus think it is spring, and then lightly mist the cactus and the top surface of the soil just enough to encourage the cactus to re root and take up water again, it can be tough though, good luck with your Cactus and wishing you a wonderful plant powered Sunday XXXX

Hi there, yes I leave a week -10 days after repotting before I water them just to allow any of the roots that have been disturbed from repotting to settle, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic weekend XXXX

Help! Can i save my cactus if i watered just now? I repotted 2h ago

Hi there, if you repotted your cactus and didn't disturb the roots too much your cactus should still be ok, but if you disturbed the roots or potted up into a much bigger pot it may be best to remove your cactus from the pot and lay it on its side on a paper towel and let the roots and soil dry out before potting up again, most of the time a cactus will still be ok if watered after repotting but they can be rot prone after repotting if they are watered too soon after repotting, thanks so much for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful new week XXXX

@@desertplantsofavalon thank you for the tip, I probably did rough the roots up quite a bit as I separated the cluster and also moved them to a much bigger pot xxx
