Ueshiba was involved in clearing vast amounts of timber during his Shirataki period... Its not a rowing action but a SAWING ACTION with a partner the other side pulling & pushing the saw to fell the tree.... Anyone who has experience in the construction and timber industries would see this straight away... Of course its all done with power saws now!! What makes me laugh is that people in aikido seem to overlook the fact that Ueshiba was physically powerful right up until his late 50's, through physical hard work & labour he was bloody strong!! Anyone who says you don't need strength to do aikido is misinformed... Its strength used in a very economical way!! Understand that and you understand "aiki", or balance breaking or "kuzushi", also seen in judo where you raise your uke upwards at the point of contact to off balance your uke to throw them with little effort.... The obvious is never obvious...

Any martial art that says you dont need at least some degree of strength, has missed the point, balance, technique,, timing, mental commitment {fighting spirit } and strength, try and survive on the streets with out any of these ?

@@davidtownsend1792 Very true. It is ok to use strenght, especially as a beginner, but what has to be avoided is TENSION of the muscles because that locks up the body.

@@Mpadilla949 It feels like a wave going forward that im guessing they run into and pull back and slight turn feels like im following or absorbing then leading them away. The gentleman on the right is just doing the exercise but the gentleman on the left is applying it because he understands it. Are there other exercises like this within aikido?

@@kubotan26 yes there are, but as you point out, many folks don’t know what they are for, or how to do them correctly…

It's a rowing exercise based on stern sculling. Very common among traditional boats in China and Japan. kzitem.info/news/bejne/tqCvq2uasoRji2k

Interesting how O’Sensei turned his hips when doing Funikogi. I have never done that! I am curious what that does for the exercise or “technique”?

The first exercise is called “furitama” (soul shaking). As far as the the power generation mechanics the torso (front and back lines) transmits power from the hands to the feet and the feet to the hands, using the shoulder and inguinal creases for adjustment. Thanks for the questions!
