Showaddywaddy always just made you want to get up and dance. Fantastic group that never seemed to really take themselves too seriously and as a result, kept rock and roll alive with a constant party atmosphere.

I always thought 1:59 that Showaddywaddy only split up, after Buddy Gask died, and Dave Bertram, their lead singer left, because his voice broke, because I remember this song, as their last released hit single, before they completely reformed, leaving Romeo Challenger as the last original band member. .

I always thought that if this song had been released at the height of their chart success in 1977 or 1978, it could have been their second number one. By 1982 the public's taste in music had changed, and this only reached 37. It has recently been added to the set of the current line up's concerts. Fantastic.
@adrinathegreat3095

True, but there was still some revival groups around but it was dwindling compared to previous years, and the older generation who were still buying covers of songs in the style they remembered as teenagers were no longer buying records. So they'd lost a fair amount of potential buyer's by 1982

@mikefule330

The song was written 1961, and it became a much covered doo wop standard. The Grease musical was written 1971, the Grease film was 1978, and Showaddywaddy are performing a cover version here in 1982 - although Showaddywaddy became active in 1973 and from the start they mainly did good cover versions of doo wop songs from the late 50s/early 60s. This is not a rip off, it is part of a continuum. Doo wop itself took ideas from earlier music. There are some great tracks out there. Look up Dion and the Belmonts, Danny and the Juniors, and Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers for "original" songs, and Showaddywaddy, Darts, and Rocky Sharpe and the Replays for some respectful cover versions (and some new material of their own). Showaddywaddy's visual image was quite naff, even for the time, but they sang well and put on a good show.
