I had the pleasure of meeting Joe in Phuket in about 2017 and spent several hours with him talking boxing and having a laugh as 2 Brits abroad and all i can say is what a great guy he is and the afternoon spent chatting and laughing with him was surreal as such a hero of mine was such a grounded and great guy. Such a talented and all time great boxer and a superb guy. We left each other that day with hugs and as if we had been friends for years. A top top guy in and outside the ring

@@absolutelycounty7446 The English would be saying 'he's a credit to England' if he was English but they can't because he is not English, he is Welsh. So English people refer to him as 'British' and say things like he's a 'credit to Britain' or great 'UK' boxer in an attempt to be associated with his talent/success. Most U.S people think England/English when Britain is mentioned. That's why English people do this label use thing with Calzaghe and almost never use his nationality (Welsh) when describing him. He is from Wales. He is Welsh. From Italian ancestry so he's Italian/Welsh. 'British' is several different nationalities with different cultures within one colony/ jurisdiction.

@@user-yp3oj5se1i As an English brit we have a sense of united-ness about all of the countries that make up the British Isles and has nothing to do with trying to take ownership of someone from another country. We live on each others doorstep, and it's far different than the process a brit has to do to reach mainland Europe as we can just drive into Wales or Scotland with no major hurldes in this tiny country. We also have no issue with someone like Joe Calzaghe saying he's a Welsh fighter, none at all, but by the same token I don't think he has a problem with people calling him a great British fighter either. As a brit he would understand this. Lastly, not to use this as a strong argument at all but it does enforce what I mean in that I just learned that Joe was born in Hammersmith London.

The referee in the Hopkins vs Taylor bout warned Hopkins in the second round that he would deduct points if Hopkins kept holding his faster opponent, and Taylor dominated after that for seven rounds at least. The same thing would have happened if Joe Cortez would have penalized Hopkins for holding in the Calzaghe fight. Calzaghe would have landed 300-400 punches in that fight if they had to just duke it out like he did in the Jermaine Taylor bout. Even so, after the 5th round it was all Calzaghe, but Hopkins limited the amount of punches he took by his constant holding of Calzaghe.
