Wow. What a gem of a program. I didn't know JM and JB worked together. I'm so glad I discovered this. I laughed so hard at the courtroom sketch. Wonderful entertainment. Thanks for uploading.

Even without the color, that courtroom sketch was a riot. I had forgotten that Jayne was an accomplished musician!

Originally telecast on January 10, 1957 (Jayne had previously appeared on Jack's Sunday night show, on December 30, 1956, to promote her appearance here).

Like what, 3 CBS stations broadcast in color then? I know they eventually got Marconi and Philips color cameras to say F.U. to RCA.

WoW! Even though we don't the color (its a kinescope..a film taken from the tv screen) this had to be one of the only, if not the only CBS show in color in 1957.

In the 1950s videotape was very expensive and so was not considered viable as a permanent storage medium. Even if a program, was transmitted in color, as this one was, if it was going to be saved the recording would be made using a process called kinescope. This basically involved pointing a specially-adjusted 16mm monochrome film camera at a specially adjusted TV set. Hence why in this recording you can see both some video dropout from the original broadcast and film speckling on the print.

It was only in color because Chrysler bankrolled the program. In fact, only a handful of CBS stations were not equipped for color televsion -- only the top markets -- and CBS featured very limited programming, largely because William S. Paley knew RCA (NBC's parent company)_ had the patent for color television. Therefore, he held off as long as possible to make the move toward a full color schedule By the mid 1960s, even ABC had more color programming than CBS.

I suspect that unless a color kinescope was made, West Coast viewers saw this show only in black-and-white, and that when the kinescope was aired on the West Coast, the very beginning (with the network announcer saying "And now, live and in full color") was not fed out.

There WAS videotape, however......and this was taped in color, and telecast IN color at 8:30pm Pacific Time. However, for those stations who rebroadcast this on a delayed basis (and DIDN'T have color facilities), the words "live, in full color" were either muted or snipped from the 16mm black and white kinescope.

46:30 - God, don't tell me these Climax actors have to get out of bed and re-create these 'scenes' against black at the end of this live color show BEFORE they actually perform it on Climax! as a live promo! NEVER SEEN such a thing except when 'ol Ed McMahon did his Alpo commercials during Carson...

48:16 - Oh, and Lyn Murray could have worked a few extra hours and mix up the arrangement a bit - total old-school 'show' music - disjointed when it goes from video to film at the end.

It was live tv so if you had a colour set you would've seen it in colour.
