Jeff Katzenberg (the "K" in Dreamworks SKG) used to work for Disney but had a huge falling out. This movie was intentionally a middle finger to them on many levels. To this day, Eddie Murphy is the only actor to get a Bafta award nomination for a voice over role for Shrek. The Nutty Professor is one of the funniest movies of all time, in that he played multiple characters with different personalities and the excellent makeup won an Oscar too. There's other gems like Boomerang and his Oscar nominated performance in Dreamgirls with Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson. He may have had a career downturn at first but then Dolemite Is My Name rejuvenated him back. He won an Emmy for returning to SNL as a host and just received the Golden Globe honorary award where he cracked a Will Smith joke and there's a fourth Beverly Hills Cop on the way so he's doing just fine.

Eddie Murphy did The Nutty Professor where he played a bunch of characters, but that was actually really well received. His massive flop was The Adventures of Pluto Nash, a $100M movie that grossed $7M worldwide. After that he stopped being cast in huge movies as the lead but he was still a prominent voice actor and he made some interesting indie films. He never really disappeared.

Great reactions to Shrek, from Simone and George. Fun Movie Fact: Mike Myers had recorded the whole Shrek movie, in a slightly over the top Canadian accent, when he suddenly realised it would be better if Shrek had a Scottish accent, so re-dubbed the whole movie, before release. :)

You have to watch Shrek 2 - because it’s hilarious, yes, but mostly because I’d so enjoy your reactions! Also, you simply MUST watch Carl Reiner’s “The Jerk” (1979). It was voted 48th Greatest Comedy of All Time, #20 on Bravo’s 100 Funniest Movies, and The 100 Greatest Performances of All Time was given to Steve Martin in his FIRST starring role in a feature film. It’s legendary, and one I’ll never tire of watching!

Disneyland is in California. Disneyland is 2 parks- Disneyland and California Adventure Park. You can visit each park in a day- so would likely only need 2 days to explore both. All of Disneyland can fit inside the parking lot of Disney World- which is in Florida. Disney World is 4 parks- Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios. You would need a minimum of 2 days just do see all of Magic Kingdom (3-4 if you want to hit all the rides). But yes- they have weird animatronics and many rides/attractions take photos that you can buy after. I think Fiona stayed an ogre because her true love was an ogre.

Honestly, Eddie Murphy's Vampire In Brooklyn was very entertaining (to me, at least), and he played multiple characters in that. But I think that was where it started going downhill - when he started playing off just himself and not really anyone else.

I've always enjoyed the Beverly Hills Cop trilogy. I know Eddie started doing kids movies because of his own kids. He didn't want them knowing their father only doing adult themed comedies or raunchy stuff like his stand-ups. That, IMO, is why in his career slipped up for a while. Tower Heist and A Thousand Words are good movies too.

The stage musical based on this movie is one of my favorite shows. As a makeup artist, I have done this show with community theaters, high school theaters, etc- so many I've lost count. They don't use the pop songs from the film; they wrote all new songs, and they're all great. The irreverent sense of humor is all in there. It makes you laugh, it makes you cry. It's a really funny, great show. If you get a chance to see it in your area, I highly recommend.

A couple of the best Eddie Murphy movies you haven't done include Bowfinger, which you mentioned (considered a return to form at the time for both Martin and Murphy after a string of misses), Dolemite is My Name, and the first Nutty Professor (definitely not the sequel, which is more the inspiration for the Jack Black scene in Tropic Thunder even though they both have scenes similar to the one in the fake trailer). Doctor Dolittle is OK. Murphy's actually had a couple of rough patches through his career -- the '90s period that includes stuff like The Distinguished Gentleman and Vampire in Brooklyn was one, and then he had another one in the 2000s, with stuff like Showtime and The Adventures of Pluto Nash. They may have explanations for Fiona's true form in the sequel, but I would say that Simone's interpretation of the ending is true for the filmmakers at the time they were making this movie and not thinking about future movies.

I'd add The Golden Child as a must see. For me, it seemed like there was a break where Murphy went from his older stuff like Beverly Hills Cop (or, even older, his standup routines like Raw) to making kids movies. Some of those movies, like Shrek, were pretty good. But I think I prefer his older stuff.

I always loved Eddie Murphy. And to be truthful, i don't even see him as having a downfall. He just had some fases, was always hilarious, but some movies where more sucessful than others. At some point people just don't go to see another Eddie Murphy movie. Not because they don't like him, but because he already see soo many of him. I think it's just a normal thing. Don't call it a downfall, he just made a lot of movies, for so long, that eventually the thing fase away.

There's a theory going around that the reason Shrek pauses before telling Donkey his name was because he'd been on his own so long, he either forgot his name or never had one because his parents were terrible. He may very well have just chosen a name on the spot. That "random-ass name" line from George may have been spot on lol

A tale has circulated that Maurice Tillet was the inspiration for the animated movie character Shrek, based on the resemblance; but there's no evidence for this and it's almost certainly not true. He had a condition called acromegaly which is usually caused by a benign tumor on the pituitary gland leading to bone overgrowth and thickening. It's really just a coincidence that he has similar body proportions to Shrek and married a beautiful woman. He was also a lawyer, he only became a wrestler when he realized that his appearance would probably limit his success in the court room.
