In a way, from these little clips Chris’ Shrek feels younger. At least from the dialogue he feels less abrasive and irritated, even if slightly. Chris’ shrek feels like a young adult shrek whose been on his own for a couple years but he’s still figuring his place in the world. He’s a little more open with the dialogue happening a little quicker. Mike in the other hand to me feels like a shrek who was forgotten about. Like donkey showed up way later. Shrek is a man now. He’s been living with this for a very long time, and it’s so deeply jaded and embittered him. The way he sounds, his aggression and slightly more volatile temper (helped with some of the extended dialogue scenes we know from the actual film) feels like he’s someone whose given up on trying to find his place. Idk if this makes sense but this is the vibe I get.
@Joshher117
Жыл бұрын
I’m sure had Chris not tragically passed away they woulda redone some of the dialogue maybe added a bit more aggression but both VA communicate different types of shrek to me. They add their own perspective and experiences to define who this shrek is and how he sees himself, the world and his relationship with the world.

I love both actors. Gotta appreciate the way they both took on the character. Chris Farley definitely had great potential and might’ve went on to do bigger things. Shame he died so young. I bet he put a lot of his own personality and how he was treated into the performance. Mike Myers us just the one we’re used to for the last 20 years. His idea of giving Shrek a Scottish accent was just the icing on the cake to make Shrek got in we’ll in the 16th century fairy tale world. I think Mike Myers started the trend of other characters having Scottish or Cockney accents. I believe Goldi and the Bears have Cockney accents. I think it’s the same with Harold and Lillian since of course John Cleese and Julie Andrews are from the U.K.

Really cool to have them play like this in comparison. They took different approaches to Shrek, but still did a wonderful job equally imo. Never thought about Shrek‘s Scottish accent until I heard him (Chris’ version) without one

I feel like Farley's Shrek would've had more heart/human moments. Not that Myers' didn’t, but I think Farley would’ve bought more of a gentle tenderness with his interpretation. Myers' Shrek had his sweet moments DGMW, but I feel like the crass, blow-hard, self-deprecating moments were more his strengths IMO

Farelys showed a more compassionate and human side as ogre/monster more than the humans did; while Meyers showed more reclusive and misunderstood ogre that wanted to be left alone and treated like a normal person

@Questions Idk I never liked Shrek as a kid, but watching this makes me think I would've loved it with Farley's sincere delivery. Also keep in mind Farley's are test recordings and Myers are the very best takes from long recording sessions. Even with that I think Farley's line delivery was better

I feel Mike Myers throws just a touch more sadness into the role imo. The "I'm just a big, dumb, ogre" bit shows justle little more humanity than Farley's take. But both are great reads.

Mike sounds a lot more genuine in his delivery. I would have loved Chris Farley as Shrek for other reasons, but he does sound like Chris is "trying" to deliver the lines; rather than just delivering them naturally.

I think even if we never had Mike Myers’s shrek we would have still had a great shrek with Chris Farley’s version. If dreamworks ever decides to release it that would be a very interesting thing to watch as long as farleys family is ok with it

Both are great and Chris’s would’ve been a success. It’s such a shame. If they could, Dreamworks probably would add the rest of his performance on a dvd. That would be nice.

“They judge me before they even know me.” No offense to Farley, but that line was delivered WAY better by Myers. Farley just says it like an observation, but Myers says it like a statement of fact. A very cold, sad, but true fact.

@@jonmartin9732 Maybe, but even so, I think the other version fits the character better. Shrek is supposed to be someone who already knows who he is and how he’s perceived by others. His time alone has given him a lot of time to reflect on his image. Surely he’s not just now realizing that people make unfair judgements about him. He’s the kind of guy who’s known it for years.

@@EthanH1 "He's the kind of guy who's known it for years." Pair that with Chris Farley's self image issues because of his size, and who knows how he was treated growing up or behind the scenes by Hollywood, and you'd have essentially the perfect voice for Shrek. Someone who has gone through much of what Shrek has.

Heya!! I'm a voice-actor, so maybe I can bring a different perspective! I love Chris Farley, but Mike is much more natural in his dialog. The way Mike says "doesn't that bother you?" and "no, this is one of those drop it and leave it alone things", sounds more normal like how a regular person would say them. Chris was going for a much more larger-than-life personality with a skip in his beat, even in his quiet moments. I'm not sure it would have worked so well since Shrek often has these intimate moments. Compare both of their "they judge me before they even know me" -- Mike's is very clear and evenly paced. Chris still has his big energy and rushes through with "theyjudgemebeforetheyeven KNOW me". He's slurring a bit and it's a bit hard to make out what he says. Chris was so well-known for being a big goofball with big energy, I get the feeling he was struggling to rein it in. He was beloved, but I think Mike was honestly the better pick. Even Eddie Murphy struggled at first. Notice how he pitches up at first with his "Ohhh, this is another one of those onion things", before pitching down at the end in the final movie, which sounds more natural. I think they both needed help and were struggling to get that, even though this is a cartoon, this was a bit more grown-up than the stuff they've seen before. But to his credit, there was some great ones Chris did like his "Alright, alright!!" and his "people see me and they go~". I think, with more time and direction, Chris could have calmer and subtle performance that Shrek called for. That all being said, Mike knocked it out of the park and helped make the character iconic. Great video!
