I am 67 years old and grew up in the woods of east-central Illinois, hunting, fishing, gathering every kind of subsistence thing the pioneers used to go after, from squirrels to sassafras roots, to spring and fall mushrooms because my grandpa and grandma were poor pioneers and they taught us. We used to seine crawdads for bait, but cook some on a camp fire. I do like my shrimp!... specially in a gumbo or jambalaya! ... but I'll take em any old way! ;) Sure looks like fun!... throwin that net. And those patties remind me of making doughball carp bait! Wish I could join ya. For those wondering, the limit is SC is still a full 48 qt cooler, just like the man said, and you can get a baiting license for $25 and run the poles just like they did. Everything shown is perfectly legal. Sounds like a good shrimpin year comin this season. Good luck!

My dad use to do lawn maintenance for people that lived on the St. John's River. They would give him permission to shrip there docks. For nearly a month before shrimp season, once a week (when we would do maintenance on their yard) he would throw fish pellets around the docks. When the shrimp really started to run, he would mix fish meal, flour and water to make patties. We would throw them off certain dock planks marked and lighted with lanterns. We used 12' dolphin nets and cast all night. Almost every night we would catch at least 250 lbs of shrimp. The only thing I didn't like was cleaning the shrimp. I'd sit with buckets of ice water deheading, cleaning and depoooping. Eventually your hands would go numb from the ice and you didn't feel that shrip Barb stab so much. I miss those times. I wish I could do one more shrimping season with him Rip.

@maces1405

@david mcintire No, regulations are put into place to protect fisheries. If everyone did whatever they wanted there would be no more fish to catch. Laws are made of a reason. It's not for Money it's for preservation. The St Johns River can't be owned. You can only hold the land up to it. Not the water way. Thus fishing regulations apply to any and all fish removed from the river. My brother in law is a Volusia County game warden. 👍

@@watchingyourvideo8029 Cold water holds more dissolved gasses than warm water. Heat cold water, see all the little bubbles come up before it even gets close to a boil? That's the gasses (air! I was a commercial shrimp fisherman for 25 years. We used a Minesweeper boat from Vietnam era. It had a two and a half foot diameter prop Powered by a 671 diesel. And we towed a beam trawl net. We fish the SF South Bay. Out by Dunbarton Bridge. Since we were dragging the bottom with our net we caught all kinds of stuff. Many times we caught sturgeon in the net as well. The biggest one was over 9 ft long. We also caught halibut close to 5 feet long every once in awhile. My boat captain used to say don't you tell nobody about this halibut. I said what what's the incentive for me to keep quiet. now that my boat captain has passed away I can tell the story the Halibut was delicious. The thing I hated most to catch in the net was California bat rays. I'm seen them over 4 ft wide. There were times we would catch a whole school of little baby bat rays about a foot wide. kind of a b**** cuz when we were dumping them them out of the net sometimes their Stingers would break off into the net and we'd be handling the net and get spiked by the stingers. That's what killed Steve Irwin the crocodile guy from Australia. Many years have passed his son grew up and it's amazing how much he looks like his dad. That was a sad day when we lost Steve Irwin. Here in the US I lost several friends in the commercial fishing industry. Commercial fisherman Joey Jones. Of Lethal Weapon bait was lost off the coast of Santa Barbara. it's never smart to go commercial fishing by yourself. my boat captain Rescue Me Two Times out of the water over 25 years. I was the most vulnerable on the boat because I worked on the rear deck of the boat. One morning it was really cool I decided to put on my life jacket to help stay warm that turned out to be a good thing. After that I wore it religiously.
