This video will walk you through the connections for a Shunt DC Motor and demonstrate how it runs without a physical load connected to the shaft of the motor.
Wooow. Truely Pete i was finding it so difficult to understand. You have broken this lesson into tiny little pieces. I can eat all of it. Thanx so much.

Thanks. This is exactly how my labs are set up for my AC/DC Machines class at my college. I find the instructor going too fast for me to keep up and learn properly as I go. Glad I found your videos and nice to hear you giving explanations of the way things work as you go.

Hi Pete. Great video. Would you have any knowledge on the old Bodine 400 series Shunt wired 115 VDC motors??? I’m trying to get one working but I understand it takes some extra knowledge and Parts. I was hoping to use a rheostat and Bridge rectifier but was told I need a Shunt controller and both the field and armature have to be controlled separately. I can see why these motors haven’t been produced for over 30 years now. Is there an easy way to change current to AC ? Thanks.

Sir i have a golf vehicle when i press pedal single time it can not move so i press pedal many time then it move and the smoothely run but the only problem is that its starting torque is very low because batteries are fully charged i check input voltage of motor 48 volt dc exact i want to increase motor starting torque what you suggest please reply its humble request

the electomagnets on the armature of a DC motor should be wound in opposite direction ?
@hvt_andreas
5 жыл бұрын
They are wound in opposite direction. It doesn't look like it, but they are because the magnets are mirrored and the windings aren't.

why does the shunt motor have a better speed control? is it just because the armature and poles are at the same potential?
@PeteVree
6 жыл бұрын
The Shunt has the best speed control because it is a parallel feed to both the armature and the shunt field, so you can control the voltage to the armature without effecting the voltage to the shunt. This maintains the cEMF from the shunt magnetic field, while reducing the voltage to the armature to control the speed. fyi If you wanted to get the motor to go above base speed, you could do the opposite... maintain voltage to the armature, and reduce the voltage to the shunt winding, which would reduce the cEMF and actually increase current to the armature.. allowing the motor to go faster than it is rated for, but with reduced torque.

If you were to hook up the ammeter on this at which locations would you place them?
@PeteVree
Жыл бұрын
The ammeter would be placed in either of the supply conductors to the motor. Best to use a Clamp-On Ammeter

Regarding terminology (my text from my school is just awful) are the shunt windings also known as the field windings too?
@PeteVree

Yes. The Field windings refer to both Series or the Shunt Windings

you used the same motor but wired it series in another video. why would you wire a motor series vs shunt? just max speed? what happens at different volts? any applications for switching a motor betweeen shunt and series?
@PeteVree
2 жыл бұрын
Series = Max Torque, no speed control Shunt = Best speed control Lower voltage = less current = less speed and torque
