Saw these guys play in 1986 with David Lee Roth, for the “Eat ‘em & smile” tour at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto Canada, that band was and still is the best band that I have ever seen and I’m 52 now. Gregg Bissonette was and still is a stellar drummer , too bad he wasn’t there.

Yeah, I just gave EE&Smile, and Skyscraper a revisit in the last couple days. I was a teenager when those were released, and I had both on cassette. Thinking about how much anticipation there was when Dave put that band together, and wondering how their first album would be received by fans had to be insane. At the time, he left one of the greatest rock bands, and turned around with his new outfit, releasing one hell of a record. Even with all the turmoil & drama, both bands came out swinging, and put out two of my all time favorites (5150 from VH).

The tapping thing has gotten so over done at this point though. Bands like Polyphia playing the most soulless, color by numbers music possible and thinking if they play a shitty song really fast and technically well it will be good. Mind you, these dudes were some of the first. I got no beef with Vai or Sheehan, just saying that what they spawned really sucks. It’s a common thing: Rage Against the Machine spawned an entire awful fucking genre of music while they themselves weren’t that terrible.
@keeponkeepinonstudio
Жыл бұрын
Yes these guys were some of the first. I used to see Billy’s band Talas in bars and parks all the time as a kid in the mid to late 70s, and he always did a solo during their shows and he was always tapping. It was his thing. His bass solos were crazy. Just amazing the sounds he got out of The Wife. Then EVH came along and everyone said no one’s ever tapped like that before. Maybe not on guitar I’m not certain on that but on bass Billy was already tapping by the time EVH became widely known. So he has every right to do that. He was one of the pioneers of it. Not sure when Eddie or Vai started doing it. I think it’s just another tool. Sometimes it is over done sometimes it appropriate. Depends on the song and who’s doing it.
@thaigo972
Жыл бұрын
@@Tyrannosaurine Being "soulless" is subjective, but I strugle to see how Polyphia can be considered "color by numbers". Their style is pretty distinct (at least before eveyone started doing it). At least they're trying something new. Without people like them we would still be listening to Chuck Berry clones. And I really hate this kind of argument; people will pretend they don't care how fast someone can play, then use that as the first argument when criticizing their music. It's equivalent to saying technicality is a negative point, not that it doesn't matter.
