The interaction started with a broad description of the Siachen glacier and its strategic importance as a wedge between the Chinese and Pakistani held areas. The glacier is an important water resource, too. Post the description, the backdrop to the ultimate occupation of the glacier in April 1984 was discussed. Col Kumar, a famous mountaineer went on expeditions to the area and warned the army authorities of the possibility of the Pakistani Army moving up to occupy the glacier if it wasn’t occupied urgently.
The occupation was undertaken at the various passes on the glacier. The men at Belafond La were led by then LT Gen (Retd) (then Capt) Sanjay Kulkarni of the Garhwal Rifles. As expected, the Pakistanis responded, however, by then the Indians were firmly in occupation of the glacier.
The battle for Quaid post in 1987 was also discussed. Pakistani SSGs had occupied the post. In the battle for this post Capt (Hony) Bana Singh was awarded the Param Vir Chakra.
Though the logistics at the posts have undergone a sea change, there is a need to think about this permanent deployment of troops at such high altitudes. Demilitarization is one of the possibilities. However, there is neither any trust between the two countries nor between its armies. Should India give its consent to demilitarization, the possibility of Pakistanis occupying the posts is very much there.
