also monét's getting it mixed up a bit, maori are polynesians (like hawaiians, samoans, easter islanders etc.) who migrated several thousands of years ago into the South Pacific from Taiwan with the same migration patterns as Malay, Vietnamese and Malagasy (madagascar) peoples to name a few. They all speak Austronesian languages, which are related to one another and share some cultural similarities, with Polynesians being most closely related to each other. The first Polynesians reached Samoa about 2000 BC, spreading throughout the rest of the islands of the South Pacific before reaching to Aotearoa NZ (the most recently settled island) at about 300AD. So I could understand someone saying that Maori come from Asia, but that would be similar to saying that most Europeans come from Kazakhstan if you're gonna go that far back in early human history. Aboriginal Australians are completely different and went straight out of Africa to Australia during the last Ice Age when there was still a land bridge between Asia and Australia, and then spread throughout Australia, New Guinea, Tasmania and several other smaller islands when they were all part of the same land mass. This was about 70,000 years ago (ie. like 30,000 years before modern Europeans left Africa) so yeah, Aboriginal Australians are as close to indigenous to a place as you get other than like actual Africans. Just thought I'd put this here in case anyone's interested, unfortunately inaccurate claims made about the history of both Maori and Aborigines in New Zealand and Australia tend to be used to further a lot of racism that those ethnic groups suffer here so it came off quite bad to me as a Kiwi (lol) even though I know I'm sure it was just innocent ignorance on the part of monét! love the podcast anyway :)

Logan Hunt amazing summation! An addition would be that indigenous Australians prior to colonisation were absolutely phenotypically black. It just so happens that the assimilationist policies constructed by colonial powers led to those features being systematically erased through active genocide and forced removal from indigenous communities. As a result, it’s an anti colonial action to reclaim blackness as an indigenous Australian in order to prevent the total erasure of those attributes from their cultural history (though of course there still remain to this day a continuing presence of indigenous Australians with typically black features )

Ok so, Aboriginal Australians have their roots in people who migrated from South Asia thousands and thousands of years ago not from Mongolia. And, the Maori people are of the greater Polynesian group who have their roots in people from Taiwan and the Philippines who migrated into the pacific and Indian ocean becoming groups such as the Malagasy, Melanesians, Micronesians and of course the Polynesians. It's also good to note that not all Australian indigenous people are Aboriginal. The Torres Strait island people (below PNG) are Melanesian stated above and are not directly the same as Aboriginal people on mainland Australia as they do not share common origins. Also, many Aboriginal Australians (not all) use the term black as an empowering tool and there is a history of Aboriginal Australians being called the n-word. I don't fault y'all for not knowing the history of Oceania peoples but I think it's important to know the history because of the years of prejudice. Love you guys :D

The ‘Kiwi’ is the national bird of New Zealand and we don’t find that term derogatory. Māori (Indeginous people of New Zealand) are Polynesians from the Pacific, some scientists say we trace our origins back to parts of Asia. Let’s be real at one point in time we all originated from Africa and yes I agree with Bob, we don’t like being call ‘bitch n*%

@@larryy3133 I found the movie iconic as a child. There were two actors my dad automatic approved of and those were Eddie Murphy and Whoopi
