That's not the problem at all, the point is Economic: any trade is based on demand/supply and for as much as you regulate it a parallel Black Market develops, this is true for ALL goods (copper, chemicals, rubber, fruit, cigarettes, alcohol... anything... it's a rule of Economic Nature). The mistake is leaving this trade 100% in the hands of the Black Market The government should regulate this trade as any other, with strict boundaries if you wish, so to squeeze the Black Market gradually out of business with PRICE

The difficulty with this overly economic approach/economic dogmatics @@ClaudeMagicbox is that drugs aren't like copper, chemicals, rubber, etc. - addiction eliminates the freedom of many of the buyers and is thus takes the "free" out of free market. Oh - and it also introduces a substance that can lead the user to become catastrophically dangerous to anyone/everyone around them. The rules of the free market don't work when you are peddling in the unfreedom of addictive substances.
@ClaudeMagicbox

@@timothydavidcurp well 90% of crime related to drug abuse is due to the need of the addicts to retrieve important sums of money to feed their habit... and this happens because the price of the substances are astronomically high due to the danger associated with their traffic/posession while drugs are actually extremely cheap products: cocaine costs less than 3 dollars a gram to produce, opium less than 50 cents, hashish can be nought in source regions like north Africa or the middle east for a handfull of pennies an ounce If the drugs were taken away from the Black Market and sold through legal and supervised circuits even the addicts would not need to steal or rob consistent amounts of money/goods to fuel their habit, they wouldn't commit crime but simply peddle a few bucks a day

Great movie, but Kate's absolute and complete cluelessness as to how the drug world actually works even thought shes an FBI agent specializing in drug busts, just wasn't credible to me. Particularly the further into the movie you get. At the end when Alejandro comes and threatens her at her apartment with violent consequences if she snitches to anyone about it, was particularly unrealistic. In the real world, he never has to go even remotely that far for the other person to understand what's up. "I'm gonna tell everyone what you did."
