The Fair play rule is the 5th & 6th options. I agree that it is stupid, but your points are valid. I like the open play goals or shots on goal before going to Fair Play rules, but when is it OK. What if Japan & Senegal were the same in those categories too? You can't expect them to play against each other as the time constraints don't allow it. Let's face facts & say this is a rare occurrence. Like I said it was the SIXTH tie breaker.

The problem with this tiebreaker is that both teams were in different parts of Russia so how would you arrange where to meet and who has to travel more. The other issue is that it consumes more energy and it would give in this case Belgium, a big advantage as they would have at least an extra day to prepare for the knockout game.
@JebeTheGreat

To be fair, pun unintended, the yellow cards are not down to the individual referees in each game. They have the VAR system, and not only does it give players yellow cards, but some players have gotten their yellow cards overturned by VAR, so it seems there is somewhat of a clear definition. Also they talk about how the African countries were denied representation in the knockout stage? Since when have we had to make sure every continent is represented? Moreso, excluding Russia, isn't Japan the last representative of Asia? Shouldn't their representation be guaranteed much like Africa's? Also also defending is a perfectly reasonable tactic if it means you're going through. And avoiding yellow cards is essentially what the card system is trying to achieve, it's rooting out the illegal tackles and actions. Complaining that someone is trying to not break the rules is flat out stupid. Also you can't compare freekicks, penalties and especially corners. Penalties more often than not succeed. Free kicks take incredible amounts of skill, so a free kick is probably a harder goal to score than your average open play goal. And now corners, you can't practically even score directly from one, so when does it stop being a corner and start being open play? In the end all this would do is make set pieces straight up worse than open play, and you'll see every corner being played short. Shots on goal isn't that bad of an idea, but surely that can be exploited as well. You just shoot towards goal every chance you get. I doubt this will create any more goals, there might be a bad bounce every now and then, but if it's shooting just for the sake of shooting, I don't think we'd see much in the way of quality. In the end both teams were given equal opportunity to advance in the tournament, neither of the teams straight up tool their chance, and Japan went through by playing by the already established rules.

J-TAR Completely agree. Of course, it's heart breaking for Senegal to go home on yellow cards but this is a pretty rare situation that you dont see often. 2 teams tied on goals for, against and of course, points. Again, although it is heart breaking, it's quite clearly the only alternative that won't have a massive effect on the quality of play (to your point, shots on goal would definitely have a negative effect on the quality of play) is to compare accumulation of yellow/red cards. Well said.
@zabuza01

I agree with every word. FIFA has already probably thought about this and decided that the fair-play tiebreaker is the best way to decide who goes based on the established rules over stats which can be manipulated way worse than Japan's 10-min egglaying at the end of game. Senegal just should have won. This will likely never happen again in my lifetime.

You cant play another game, the restriction of the Tournament on games being played as they are scheduled, for a many of reason all of which would take more days to resolve than there are days for the tournament to be played in. Secondly this Tournament has been played since the 1930's and this is the first time ever this type of rule has been enforced. So obviously it is not really much of a concern to FIFA, as one team gets eliminated by this rule (fair or not) and mainstream media blows up for 24 hours about it, and then everyone forgets about it cause it wont happen again for 100 years. And more important things are going to occur right after this, which the media will then focus on and forget about this topic. So stop losing your minds people, leave it and move on. Lastly I LOVE YOU SENEGAL, you guys played really well all tournament it sucks it went down like this but really all you had to do was not lose your last game and you did so really whose fault is this.

I don't think shots on target or open play goals work. With shots on target, they still don't go in. Also what if one of them advanced through that rule through most of the shots being tame efforts. As for open play goals, that's silly too. Japan's first goal was from a penalty because one of Colombia's players made a stupid handball that stopped a goal from happening. The yellow card rule getting argued against for the different referees make things more complicated, not justifiable to prove
@jefft3217
6 жыл бұрын
Maybe this is a stupid way to do it but take three categories into consideration: possession, shots on target and pass accuracy, whoever has the most in two of the three categories between the two teams advances. At least you'll get a team that played better advancing. It may be dumb but I think it's better than who got the least amount of yellows between the two teams.

How about a little history 1st? It was originally dubbed a gentlemen's game. Whether or not it's played by gentlemen is another story. So you're telling me that the dirties team, the ones who know how to make the most fouls w/o a red card can go thru? It's called the beautiful game for a reason. It's about highly skilled athletes doing amazing things with the ball at their feet. It's not about thugs/neanderthals running around kicking a ball.

I don't see the issue with the "fair play" rule, it's a necessary evil for the sport. The truth is soccer is typically a low scoring game and about 25% of the games end in a draw, which is not a gross exaggeration. So unless you're going to implement shootouts at the end of each game to decide winners, you're sometimes going to need some silly rules like "aggregate scoring" and "fair play" to decide who advances in tournaments.
