Amazing series James. I like how you showed everything including small imperfections. I'm glad you left in the binding of the saw on the sliding dovetails and the micro adjustments for the angles. It just shows the reality and fun of hand tool work.

I appreciate your taking the time to explain mission and shaker joinery. Original mission furniture was made with extremely primitive tools, usually made on-site by direction of a priest by natives that has to learn how to work the metal to make the tools to make the furniture. Perhaps akin to plopping my ancient butt down with a bunch of electronics parts and telling me how to put them together to make a 3d printer for me to program to make a plane body. Becoming a certified mission Craftsman in more than one skills area is not a fast or easy process. Or, at least, it wasn't 30 years ago.

Fun to see this video after all the shop organization type videos. Ah, Joshua Klein and the faux grain painted pine card table from issue #1. I had forgotten, thanks for the reminder. I'm just finishing up a Federal card table, using some hand tools including ones I made specifically for stringing, and power tools. and reading the article again I got a lot more out of it this time for sure. But he had 18" pine boards, didn't have to do any edge joining. And did you notice the pocket holes for joining the top to the apron? That's what John and Thomas Seymour did on their Newport highboys too, so they have an illustrious history (I used shop-made table buttons). Curious connection between Federal and Shaker, did you know that the Shaker design consisted of simplifying the then-current styles of the early 19th century (Sheraton, Hepplewhite, and Federal, all three variations of neoclassical)?

This should be good. I'm trying to increase the proportion of hand tool use in my furniture projects, but the long rip cuts and lots of cross cuts are too much so far ;-) How about making your own glue out of animal parts? That would fit perfectly in the western tradition. Fiendishly complex joinery and glueless woodworking is from Japan and China, I think. Weren't draw-bored tenons just a backup in case the glue failed?
@WoodByWright
6 жыл бұрын
making my own glue is on the list. Drawbore and tusked tenons are one of the oldest forms of joinery from before glue was used. and I am not doing any complex joinery on this. nothing that the eastern traditions would use as they do not like to see joinery at all. I on the other hand love to see the joinery.
