This is so great coming from the director of '12 Angry Men' (1957), 'The Fugitive Kind' (1960), 'The Pawnbroker' (1965), 'The Hill' (1966), 'The Offence' (1972), 'Serpico' (1973), 'Dog Day Afternoon' (1975), 'Network' (1976), 'Equus' (1977), 'Prince of the City' (1981), 'Deathtrap' (1982) and many more. This is praise indeed and, I'm sure, means much to Coppola !

Lumet was a world class director and I agree with his assessment of The Godfather I and II. However, the inescapable question is why Francis Coppola wasn't able to sustain his artistic success during the 70s, 80s and 90s. His "Apocalypse Now" was a well regarded film, however, there were numerous misfires: One From The Heart; Gardens Of Stone, the third Godfather film in 1990, The Outsiders, etc. In the case of Orson Welles, he never had the same artistic control or freedom after Citizen Kane and his films were severely edited by studios; additionally, he had constant difficulty in obtaining financing for his projects.

I think the experience of making Apocalypse Now screwed him up to some extent - another point is that some crucial decisions about the first 2 Godfather films I've heard Coppola made under some protest - his later work has a self-indulgent quality sometimes, tho he's always keen to experiment - his Dracula has proved quite influential, and I think his Rainmaker is one of his best, bringing him back to his pulp genre roots from the time he'd tackled Puzo - I also liked Tetro a lot - so much that I traveled to Buenos Aires because that film made the city seem so captivating - but as you say, his work since Apocalypse is wildly uneven, and not on the level of his 70s run

JixMa you just answered yourself there. He thinks this picture is as close to perfection as it gets because - whether only in his opinion or not - it is brilliantly acted, directed, etc. And this is what makes a picture great, isn't it? He didn't go into the details though but he didn't have to. I think he made his point perfectly clear.
