You just happened to opened up to my favorite piece in that book. #8. My teacher and I do a lot of the exercises in that book. It's my fave, although I'm barely a quarter of a way thru the book.

Before I started learning the Cello some 10 months ago, my prior knowledge of music theory dates to a few decades ago, to the lower grades in school. And I didn't really pay attention to the music classes we had back then. So "reading" a music sheet now still comes down to deciphering it (as in "G goes there, I am one line up, so it must be a B"). What I try, but not systematically, is listen to a piece while trying to follow the music on a music sheet. It works better if the music sheet "follows" the music, i.e., highlights the notes that are being played while they are played. And I don't need glasses, really. I need a bigger print ;-)

That does work much better. Do you use a specific program for that? Like a sort of visual play-along thing?
@JacquesKinnaerCello

There is Musescore, which plays along, but which also allows you to write your own music. Musicnotes (website and application) sells music sheets, which you can download and then play in their application/app. The website 8notes.com does something similar, but without needing to download or install an application. On tablets, there is "Playalong Cello", which includes a few melodies and allows you to buy some more. The goal here is that it show you the note to play, you play it and at the end it tells you how many you got right and wrong :-)

Hi Sarah! I've been playing cello for five months now and I'm still having trouble reading music. I also find it very difficult to find simple classical pieces for the cello and was wondering if you could help me. do you know any simple classical pieces in the 1st position? I don't really like covers of pop songs on the cello, but when I look for simple pieces, they are often suggested to me. Thanks a lot! 💞

Dear Sara, I very like your intro and your backround music. Maybe you can make a video about your experience with practice time (I mean how much you practiced as a beginner, advanced ect. and how much you practice now). I'm very interested in that, because I always ask myself whether I practice enough. Greetings from Germany and keep up your great work.

Hey Sarah. I really need your help. I'm just starting on the cello and I've been plucking the strings. My fingers have been blistering and stinging. I kept practicing anyway but my fingers are killing me. I don't want these blistered fingers to prevent me from practicing often. I don't know what to do, please please help! I'm not in any way going to let these fingers make me stop playing the cello! Thanks!

Hi Cammie! It'll hurt for a while, and you have to just put up with the pain. Eventually, you'll develop calluses. In the mean time, you might try putting on New Skin. That might help. :)

This isn't specifically related to sight-reading, but I have a big problem with my bow hold. I started in music as a student violist, but about a year and a half ago I switched to cello. I haven't had the chance to have personal lessons, or even another peer that helped me transition swiftly. I still have trouble with a proper cello bow hold, and I don't want any problems down the line from that. Please send help.
@sarahjoyrecordings

I do have a few videos that deal with the bow. Maybe try watching those, and see if they help. I would definitely recommend a teacher though. The violin bow hold is quite a bit different from the cello bow hold.

How to know when is 4th persition and 2nd position on the score
@sarahjoyrecordings
7 жыл бұрын
Scores in professional settings usually do not indicate the position in which the music should be played. It is often left up to the player's judgment. Decisions are made according to accessibility, comfort, and tone quality. :)
