I've had and used this lens for over 6 years, and it has never failed me once; very reliable, nice color rendition, clean, and sharp images. Yes, it weighs a bit on the heavier side, but trust me, this len's a stunner!

Totally agree, optically it's a winner. Perhaps at the first release it was too expensive, but now it's a bargain really (price is half what it was). I suspect Sigma still sell quite a lot of these, partly because other makers discontinued their ones,(Tamron notably, obvious blunder by the company), and they deserve too very good lens. If you make use of the focus limiter it's not just a lens for macro use either.

Excellent and complete review, I'm interested in this lens but I don't want to use it only for macro, I want to shoot other things like portraits or whatever, and your review exactly explains what I need to know. Thank you!

I think some people forget or overlook, that macro lenses can work very well for other types of photography. I have tended to go for longer focal lengths (ie above 50mm), to double as a portrait/tele lens which is reasonably fast. This works well for this task, even did pretty well for some action. I appreciate your comment, I did try to convey as much as I could, without dragging it on!

I don't think I've seen bad reviews of it. At the time of release it was quite expensive (some early reviews mention this), but today new or used it's a very reasonable price. There is nothing to complain about optically, excellent. Not the fastest AF but with the limiters not a problem at all

It's a bit on the heavy side, but the lens is a very good performer optically. Thanks for the comment!

@MrBazReviews yeah it is heavy. This is my 4th lens. I bought the tamron 70-300 mm a few months ago, but I guess I don't know how to use it properly as the pictures just aren't as good as the sigma. The sigma is amazing. I've been taking so many pictures of my aquarium plants and fish 😄. No problem, take care and brilliant video.

@@aqua_Laura Lot of choices, but try the 17-50mm Sigma, that's a nice lens. Full frame is also pretty affordable these days ;-)

It says 12" minimum focus distance so that must mean a full frame camera. My Canon T8i with this lens will focus less than 3" away if you want.
@MrBazReviews
Жыл бұрын
The min focus is the same regardless of sensor. What it means is focal plane to subject, NOT from the front of the lens. That is a common misunderstanding. All the crop factor does is reduce the field of view (1.6x crop for Canon 1.5x for everyone else roughly). Focus distance is the same

what do you mean effective f stop is reduced?
@MrBazReviews

Yes, the aperture is still wide open, but the closer you get the light is lost. It's explained quite well here, it is normal for all macro lenses. www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/macro-lenses.htm

I don't see why it won't work well enough for video, you can adjust the AF re-focus speed in camera usually if you are using it in AF

Superbbb... can we use polarizing filter for this lens means for macro photography ? any benefit
@MrBazReviews
Жыл бұрын
Depends on the subject a CPL more contrast, less reflections. But the angle of light also effects the outcome It is worth having one of those filters. You do lose light though remember that it will cut it a bit

Excellent review. What's the maximum useable F-Stop before diffraction rears it's ugly head? Thanks in advance.
@MrBazReviews
Жыл бұрын
It will depend on the sensor and resolution. But you will start to notice a drop off at about f/16 (for say a 24mp sensor full frame, a bit below that for a higher pixel one), that said I would not hesitate to use that aperture if needed. The other option is focus stacking

The only information I have is the 1.4x EX DG and 2x EX DG TC's are compatible. Doesn't seem to be on the list for the 1401 which is here: www.sigma-global.com/en/wp/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/08172022/tele-converter_tc-1401_tc-2001_en.pdf

@@MrBazReviews Will this lens be used to take long-distance photos at events such as weddings?
@MrBazReviews
Жыл бұрын
@@JonathanChompy Yes obviously you will need to move around to compose. But I have as have others used a lens like this (ie 90-105mm macro lenses) for people photos, events, even used it for some action shots later in the samples. Of course the AF isn't as fast as a 70-200mm lens, but it is smaller and lighter. I often use it in place of such a lens and it's F2.8 and has OIS too. I have used it on Full frame and APS-C. So yes it's a viable choice to do that, and portraits too. Some prefer an 85mm but as I said you have OIS with this and F2.8 is for me fast enough
