I picked mine up for just 270€ And it hasn't failed me once on my Nikon D3300 It's very very sharp and I've never had a problem with the autofocus, it was always spot on. Much better than my kit lens before that. The Problem where it didn't focus on video mode has something to do with the camera. It would focus perfectly fine when the camera was in photomode. And saying it's shit when it can't focus 2 out of 10 shots is just ridiculous. Whatever...

This lens is still a good option for photography -- you can get a mint copy for about $150 on ebay -- but it's way better if you get the A-mount version and use the LA-EA5 adapter. Native autofocus support. The only downside is the Sony version of this lens doesn't have optical stabilization (not a big deal for me, my A6500 has IBIS). It's a sharp lens and you can get it + the adapter for about $350-$400 total.

Only the new sigma Art series has decent autofocus with the sigma MC-11 adapter for e-mount lenses. Check the lens compatible list of Sigma MC-11 adapter. Even with sigma MC-11 or metabones adapter the e-mount cameras have autofocus problems with third party lenses. From my experience with metabones the wide angles lenses have better speed with autofocus. In general wide angle are much easier during focus. Bright telephoto portrait lenses are challenging during autofocus with adapters. Their depth of field is very shallow at large apertures and the adapter struggles.
@JamesWillmus

I had this lens on my Nikon D5200, however I mostly shot landscapes and the occasional portrait. I did have several problems, though. Firstly, the autofocus would miss occasionally. This might have been the D5200 and not the lens, but it was probably a bit of both. ~85% of the time AF worked fine. The lens was bigger and heavier than necessary, but it felt good on the DSLR. I imagine that it would be front heavy on any of the a6xxx series cameras. Finally, that damn autofocus ring was too loose and had too short of a throw. Whenever I as so much as touched the lens, my subject would get WAY out of focus and I'd have to readjust. Basically forced me to rely on the autofocus. It's main strength, however, was corner to corner sharpness. Worked flawlessly in that regard. And at least with landscapes, it's not like I missed too many shots.

Another great review! Sigma with adapter woks fine 8/10 for still pictures (AF-S) but not for video (AF-C mode doesn't work) unless will be used with manual focus only. I have the same results with my CameraPlus - autofocus focal reducer adapter and Canon lenses - works almost perfect in AF-S mode, but doesn't in AF-C at all. I think, that e-mount Sigma 19mm f/2.8 or 30mm f/1.4 will be a better choice, if you have a6500 with 5-axis stabilization. I agree that Sony 18-105 will be a much better alternative for everyday pictures and video. Regards,

Along with a 50-150, it really is the only thing I feel they are missing. In the mean time it's back to the admittedly versatile 18-105, and my primes. Canon users really are spoiled for choice. Did you just get the A6300? I thought you only had a 6000, if so congrats! It's worth the upgrade IMO. 6000 feels like a toy next to the 6300 or 6500. It's been hard to find a replacement for the kit lens but I've settled on waiting to get the 18-105 f/4. My canon glass on my 6300 is soooo not preferable for a compact camera, only use my Canon EF 85 1.8 because I like it a lot and it's crazy sharp just like the Sony. Using a DSLR kit lens on the 6xxxx series is so clumsy, it works but when you realize its larger than most primes and zooms for less....yeah

The cost of things like the speed booster for EF mount to E-Mount is the price or at least half of the money of a good piece of native glass. I really think APS-C Mirrorless cameras are the future for a lot of what an entry level APS-C DSLR can do. I can't recommend a DSLR to a new shooter unless they are serious about photography because after a while people get tired of the weight of a DSLR. My A6300 doesn't look intimidating and it can fit in my jacket with two lenses easily. MC-11 adapter does seam pretty impressive though, I'll have to pick one up since I use dumb adapters with no aperture control.

The sony 16-50mm f2.8 weights 570g, which is about the same as the Sigma. I would guess that with the LA-EA3 or EA4 the Sony would work better than the sigma and MC-11. Video AF doesn't work with the LA-EA3 though.

Great review I was looking into getting this but realize that I have already bought a beast sigma 18 to 35 f1.8. Have you found your replacement yet for a 2.8 at 17-50mm ? I have the 18 to 105G but want to get something that is at least 2.8f to as a travel companion. Thanks .

couples of questions : 1. hows the battery life when using the sigma lens? 2. will the mc11 and sigma work with my a6000? how about the AF performance? thank you for the reply

1. Its the same as normal battery life - not amazing. I always carry Wasabi batteries with me. 2. It doesnt work. No AF, so I would not recommend it. Unless you want a manual only lens.

Technology Mafia!!!! Please check out the Sigma 18-35mm f 1.8!!! I'm really interested in results that this lens can produce on a6300!!! Also the sigma 50-100mm is probably the sharpest apsc lens to date. Worth chekckin' it out;) Keep up the good work!!!:)

ACDGibson: The 1.8/18~35 Art is plain awesome on the a6300 - here a few examples: www.flickr.com/photos/mike-mkvip/albums/72157678795587105 Works perfectly with the Commlite and like native with the MC-11 and Metabones Mark IV - including DMF, expand flexible spot and eye-AF.

What brand and model of adapter are you using? I have this lens on a Pentax and it has stabilization but I'm presuming stabilization is not working on the Sony. This is a very sharp lens compared to either of the Sony kit lenses I have. Also much more affordable then most of the non-kit Sony Zooms at new prices. So even just for use as a all manual lens I think its a good alternative to buying a vintage zoom.

Hi, I like your videos, recently I switched from Nikon to Sony and I’m still learning, quick question... why the AF doesn’t work with A6000 and it does with A6300? How are the AF Nikon-Sony adapters from Amazon? Can I get autofocus with them? Thanks!

Can you tell us did the stabilization work good? I have this lens (Canon version), and I do not do video almost at all, do you think It would be usable on an a6300/6500 for stills? BTW does the adapter work with non sigma and full frame EF lenses?

Solely based off image quality for photography. Would you say this or the Sony 18-105 is the sharper lens?

Great review. I have Sigma 17-70mm 2.8-4 HSM with Sigma MC11 and Sony A6500. With newest firmware it;s OK in photo mode. I know Sony SEL18105G is way better for video but how about photo quality? - chromatic aberration.

I'm torn between getting the A6000 with a quality lens or two like you suggest or get the A6300 and use the kit lens for a year or two and save up for a few quality lenses... any suggestion? I've done a lot of research and honestly I love the A6300 but I don't plan on doing much video other than family events or occasional trips... I do like how the EVF is enhanced and you can actually see the changes prior to taking the shot.. any advice or feedback would be great! Keep these awesome videos coming!
@ArthurR

If you arent doing video, there is little reason to pay 2x for the A6300. Your target price for an A6000 body only should be $350, or $450 with kit lens.

AF in video mode really only works after you hit record tho' ... not sure if that helps with this lens tho' ... i don't have the MC11 so i can't test it with that lens... but love this lens on the FS7 but focus manually on that one anyways ;)

Why not 16-70 f4 over the 18-105 f4 as a replacement for kit lens?
@ArthurR
7 жыл бұрын
Because I don't think that lens is particularly good. It's too expensive ($850) for a lens that performs barely better than a kit lens ($150) at certain zoom ranges. It's sad to admit this, but at 50mm the kit lens is slightly better.

@CarthagoMike

Wel yes, the autofocus is wonky here due to the adapter. When you mount it on the mount it was made for, it performs perfectly fine.

It actually works better in photo mode via the adapter on a a6500 in my experience (t3i). Much more sophisticated than what Canon had. With that said the AF doesn't work in video mode.

I have tried many f2.8 lenses with adapter before and I reached to a point which is any thing that does not has e-mount logo on it, is waste of money and limiting a6000 capabilities.
@ArthurR

It's easy to get discouraged. I am hoping one day I will find a solution that doesn't limit the A6000 TOO much... and pays off with excellent, sharp images.
