update regarding the f stop read out error: you can fix it by reload the battery which kind of reset the temporary memory i guess. -Author's note: at the time when I was considering this lens there were not many reviews online, at least not many up-to-date reviews, you can find a few decent reviews with old DSLR cameras and the photo and video samples were not contemporary enough for today's purchasers to really make a good decision, so I took a risk and bought the lens despite it being vastly overlooked by the photography community, I mean, f2.8-4 is a big turn-off for a lot of people already. But I was really really pleasantly surprised by how good the lens is, it is sharp, it is sharper than my leica 12-60 f2.8-4 a native lens in certain focal range, it can autofocus better than any other adapted lenses I tried, it has modern aesthetic design, great ergonomics and functionality and it's a macro lens, what's not to like? I'm glad that I took the risk and I'm glad how this video turned out, as expected it's getting over 10k views within a year with 100 likes, a solid performance for my small channel, actually one of the top performance among all my videos, I kind of felt that it would go this way, everything just lined up perfectly: an overlooked, under-reviewed lens, flexibly adaptable and solid performance for a standard zoom lens, yeah, sometimes you just know one of your videos is going to be a success and this was one of those.

Very informative, this video was super useful and has made me realise I have to go for the 17-50mm. With a cage and rig on my GX80 its not so easy to remove the Viltrox adapter if the F-stop malfunctions. So the constant aperture is a safer bet and ill use my Panasonic 12-32 pancake on the gimbal as the 17-50mm will be far too heavy.

As a photographer speed boosting this lens, does that vignette only exist in wide angle or does it also appear at 70mm as well? Looking to get this lens but I fear it will have the same vignette issues when speed boosted as my 18-250 sigma.

update on the autofocus: I'm making a continuous af test in video tomorrow, link here (kzitem.info/news/bejne/ymuexYGak351npg), here's a summary: GH5 + viltrox speedbooster: in video: one area autofocus mode works, okayish performance, not gonna rely on it, other modes are tough. In photo: in general the autofocus is fast and accurate especially with one area or pinpoint focus mode, very reliable. A6300 + commlite adapter: in video it does not respond at all, you have to press shutter button to trigger autofocus. In photo it works fine but i prefer manual focusing just to be sure.(kinda skeptical about commlite adapter)

This sigma is f2.8-4, variable aperture, its designed for DSLR cameras and can only be adapted on sony e mount cameras. The tamron is constant f2.8 naticely designed for mirrorless cameras, if you are choosing between these two definitely go for tamron f2.8 for emount

Either one is a great step-up from the kit lens, you probably won't go wrong either way, the 17-50 f2.8 has constant f2.8 aperture advantage, having a standard zoom range it is probably the safest bet if you have to choose. The 17-70 f2.8-4 is what I prefer personally for the longer zoom range and more modern build quality. They both should perform really well on native camera body so you don't have to worry about what I said about autofocus performance or vignetting etc in this video.

Can you use this lens without using the speedbooster?does the speedbooster serve as a multi mount compatibility or only converts a camera mount to a certain lens mount type?meaning to say for example can you use the gh5 lens kit with speedbooster to let more light in and deal with the cropped feature of m43s or its only needed when you will use canon or sony lenses?thanks
@AiurMedia
3 жыл бұрын
this lens does not offer native m43 mount therefore you can not use this lens without speedbooster or at least an adapter. Speedbooster's ability of "letting in more light" works through readjusting the incoming light and fit the entire coverage of APSC on a m43 sensor, your lens technically doesn't get faster. You cannot use speedbooster on native m43 lens because that kind of stuff doesn't exist. My speedbooster is for canon mount so i can adapt most canon mount lenses. Alternatively you can also use adapter without glass elements inside then you get x2 crop, this sigma 17-70 would become 34-140mm.
@Gogies777

@@AiurMedia Isn't it that speedbooster gives a better field of view by and like add partial of one f stop as a result?"readjusting the incoming light and fit the entire coverage of APSC on a m43 sensor" ? This is what i read on wiki "Speed Booster increases the lens's speed by a stop,", so its like a ahck to make your lense a bit faster but not really faster if that's what you mean? Thanks for clarifying that i can't use a speed booster with kit lens on g85 using to make it somewhat faster(adding full f stop).that's where i got confused upon learning about this.basically it only works if you use other lens and not m43s.
@AiurMedia
3 жыл бұрын
@@Gogies777 yes it increase the light by one stop in a sense that a f2.8 apsc lens will read and behave like f2 lens with speedbooster on m43 camera, however the lens itself is not changed and the amount of light let in is still firstly determined by the lens, basically with speedbooster you achieve the same look on m43 as an apsc camera, means that 17-70 with speedbooster on m43 camera will behave nearly exactly the same as sigma 17-70 on native apsc camera, which is an "increase" for m43 in terms of light because m43 sensor is smaller than apsc. Look up the speedbooster explanation video by gerald undone should help u understand it, you can also try to get one yourself to play with it's not expensive :)

@AiurMedia

i think it does, canon made its apsc lenses in a way that doesn't fit on fullframe camera even thought they are the same mount, but third party lenses usually dont handicap the mount like that. Look it up though i am not 100% sure it fits.
