Hello, I’m Dr. Carole Keim and today I’m going to teach you how to spot an amoxicillin allergy. It takes 7-10 days of amoxicillin to cause an allergy the first time, so if your child has gotten their first amoxicillin and gets a rash just before the medicine is going to run out, they might be allergic. In some children, the allergy appears the second time they take it. If your child has already had two courses of amoxicillin it’s unlikely that they will develop an allergy, but still possible.
An amoxicillin rash will look like little pink spots all over your child’s chest and back, and will spread to the arms, legs, and face. It may be itchy but it may not.
If you think your child might be having an allergic reaction to any medication, call a doctor right away. If you live in or near Boulder and the doctor’s office is closed, call me and I’ll come to your home and save you an ER visit!
