Last few vids have been quite impressive DF! The train looked like a great experience and it's cool to see the countryside and the local kids waving as the train rolls by them. Not sure what type of camera you are using but it records so beautifully that I must get one for myself. Keep traveling like you say. I want to own less and travel more. Another great video DF. I was in Kampot last year for a few days and loved it. I highly recommend trying the ribs at the rusty keyhole, i had them every day i was there and thought they were great value. I also rented a bike and did a day trip up the mountain to the abandoned casino and took some great pictures. There is also a proper casino built a few km's away which is good fun if you like playing cards. I stayed at the Magic Sponge guest house and absolutely loved it. Very clean, great facilities and the owners are super friendly. I enjoy watching your videos and reminiscing about my travels over there. ps. Go the Dees!

Fascinating video mate. You were going to pay that tuk-tuk driver whatever price he wanted! I'm much more of a planner than you - no way I would arrive in Kampot at night without some kind of reservation! Train trip looked quite nice.

Cool video mate. Would you be able to remember how 'comfortable' the seats in the train were? I'm planning to do the ride all the way to Phnom Penh in September and i am afraid the 7 or so hours on those seats would break my arse. Or perhaps stopping for the night midway would be a decent shout ?

So you paid the same amount($4) to get to the bus station as you did to get from Sihanoukville to Kampot? Sounds like tuk tuks are pretty expensive there.
@deadfarang
8 жыл бұрын
Hi RG, Yes that right, then anouther $4 from Kampot train station to Riverside, Kampot City. The tuk-tuk driver in Sihanoukville would not budge. Between 2 people it was $2 each, hardly worth loosing any sleep over. Regards DF.

Looked like a great train ride , liked the fact there were plenty of fans . Always makes you laugh when you pay the same fare for a 10 minute tuk-tuk ride as you do for a 3 hour train or bus ride . No surprise the tour operator's don't give out train info , a bit mean to give your the wrong time if it was deliberate . Know you've covered Sihanoukville before but how come no footage of this trip . Good vlog .

Hi SW, There is plenty coming of videos about Sihanoukville coming soon. I'm heading back there soon. My videos don't edit themselves. thanks for the video. trains are great. the only experience I have is Bangkok to Chiang Mai. that was quite the experience the rails themselves so Twisted I thought we were going to bounce off all the seats for broken train broke down had to transfer to bus. sounded like it was about to blow up no air conditioning no opening windows. puffing black smoke what was the day tran the Night Train was supposed to be more fun. 2 sleeper cars. with a bar car in the middle. with air conditioning so powerful that you could freeze to death. I advise it it's really quite the adventure.

great video...well documented. one question....why was the railway closed for 14 years ?
@deadfarang
8 жыл бұрын
Good question! Back in the mid 90's a train travelling from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville was ambushed by the Khmer Rouge in Kampot. Thirteen Cambodians died in the initial attack. 3 tourists including an Australian and Brit and Frenchman were kidnapped with 200 Cambodians and held hostage. The Khmer Rouge demmanded $50,000 in gold for the backpacking tourists to be released. Governments don't like to negotiate with terrorists so the money was never paid and the 3 tourists were tortured and murdered. From there people stopped using the train service and eventually it was not financially viable to continue so the train stopped running. If you google around you will find news articles on it. Thanks for watching. Regards DF.
