Former Indian defender Nirmal Chettri has joined hands with the people of Melli to defend his hometown from the wrath of floods that wreaked havoc on Sikkim over the past few days. Working shoulder to shoulder with the locals, the former footballer is creating a temporary embankment against the raging Teesta River.
He also expressed concern over the town's safety and appealed to the administration to come up with a lasting solution to strengthen Melli's riverbank and protect nearby communities from future threats.
We are working on a temporary solution as of now by creating an embankment. But I want to appeal to our administration and Chief Minister
to come up with a solution for the protection of the people of Melli soon after the floods so that we can have a long-term solution in place," Chettri said.
Sikkim has been hit by several landslides and flash floods following incessant rainfall since June 12. So far six people have been reported dead and close to 1,500 tourists are stranded in Mangan alone. The state also witnessed large-scale infrastructural damage over the past few days.
